NOTABLE QUOTES

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) reflecting on the reporting by media and others as the power shifted in Washington: Over the past several months, we have seen businesses destroyed, rapid increases in mental health challenges, massive decreases in treatments for cancer and other deadly diseases, Americans dying alone as their loved ones grieved via video chat, and American children’s education sacrificed. All of this was supposed to defeat a virus, but with each passing post-election news cycle, it becomes clearer that a lot of it was simply to defeat one man.

Ilana Mercer contributor to American Greatness wrote: Peace through strength increasingly is the province of the state, and not the sovereign individual. We live under the law of rule, not the rule of law.

Jason Fertig contributor to American Greatness wrote: A society that stays in and muzzles up until the government says it’s safe to come out is not as free as we thought it was. Smiles matter.

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) in a letter to the Senate condemning AOC for her tweet accusing Sen. Ted Cruz of trying to kill her: It has come to my attention that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sent out a tweet a few hours ago in which she accused one of our colleagues — twice — of attempted murder. I believe that, as a conference, we should immediately and publicly call on her to retract her statement and apologize. If she refuses to do so — and perhaps even if she doesn’t — I think she should be admonished or censured by the House.

Rep. Chip Roy in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) condemning AOC’s tweet accusing Sen. Ted Cruz of trying to kill her: If Representative Ocasio-Cortez does not apologize immediately, we will be forced to find alternate means to condemn this regrettable statement. It is my sincere hope that we all stop this heightened rhetoric and move forward to actually do the work the American people sent us here to do.

2020 ELECTION

ProTrump News Staff: GOP Likely To Pick Up Another House Seat
It is January 30th and we still have an undecided House election. Of course, it’s “undecided” because the Republican is leading. […] If Claudia Tenney holds on, the Democrats’ advantage in the House will be only 9.

Carl: Caught with Their Hands in the Cookie Jar
The Democrats stole the election, and it’s critically important we keep saying it. If you have a number of children, as I do, you might be familiar with something like the following scene: A child is caught red-handed doing something he shouldn’t, say, stealing a cookie from the cookie jar. When confronted, he immediately begins to deny guilt and deflect blame. “My sister ate the cookie! I was just reaching my hand in to make sure it was gone so I could tell you,” the child might exclaim, while dusting cookie crumbs off of his shirt. If pressed about his obvious guilt, he might become angry and lash out.
This is just the sort of behavior we are witnessing from the election-rigging Democrats over the past several weeks. […] Like the child with his hand in the cookie jar, the more guilty the Democrats are of “winning” a blatantly rigged election versus Donald Trump, the louder they must scream about their noble crusade to save “democracy” from “fascism.” s commentator Glenn Greenwald recently told Tucker Carlson, “They’re trying to harness corporate and monopoly power to silence everyone who disagrees with them, the very hallmark, the epitome of the fascism they claim to be fighting, but which in reality they embody.” Given our current strategic situation, the fact that this election was rigged is the core message we need to proclaim, and that is—not coincidentally—why it is the one thing social media and the powers that be will not allow us to say. The reign of terror they are unleashing upon the Right is really a demand that we accept their false narrative. And here’s an uglier and more depressing truth we need to embrace: . . .

FIGHTING FOR ELECTION INTEGRITY

(ARIZONA) Arizona Daily Independent: Bolick Introduces Bill Aimed At Restoring Checks and Balances In Elections
HB 2720, introduced by Rep. Shawnna Bolick, is said to be one of the most comprehensive approaches to addressing on-going and emerging election-integrity issues proposed this year. Bolick, whose office received over 30,000 emails, letters, and calls from constituents complaining about Arizona’s current elections process, says she introduced the bill after speaking with experts such as election observers and poll watchers. Currently, Arizona’s secretary of state is the only person who decides whether Arizona’s election results will be certified. Bolick’s bill would create a legislative check and balance over the exercise of this authority. Under Bolick’s proposal, the legislature, which already has the power to subpoena evidence and audit elections, would be able to countermand the secretary’s decision to certify an election but would not be able to pick its own winner. The legislature, which has seen itself rendered powerless to act in the face of major issues, such as the pandemic, when it is not in session, would be able to exercise this authority throughout the year. Bolick’s proposal would require . . .

GOP

(H/T DG) Strassel: The Senate’s Byrd Call – WSJ
As Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema vow never to bust the filibuster, their Democratic colleagues plot instead to bust the Byrd rule. Progressive are fuming, even as the declarations had the effect of immediately helping Democrats and President Biden’s early agenda. It reassured Minority Leader Mitch McConnell enough to agree to an organizing resolution that puts Democrats in control of evenly divided Senate committees. Yet it turns out that the promise is, for now, only half a loaf. The Senate in fact has two guards against allowing a bare majority to jam through sweeping policy changes. One is the legislative filibuster. The other is what’s known as the Byrd rule . . . The Senate has a process called budget reconciliation, which allows certain spending and tax measures to pass the chamber with a simple majority. Even as the two senators vow never to bust the filibuster, their Democratic colleagues are plotting instead to bust the Byrd rule. Progressive groups are ramping up pressure on Democrats to load the Biden agenda into reconciliation bills, then simply overrule the parliamentarian when she finds them in violation of the Byrd rule. A recent Vox piece lectured that the decision of an “unelected bureaucrat” does not equal “a divine command.” Some activists are making the case that Vice President Kamala Harris, who presides over the Senate, ought to have final authority over what counts for reconciliation. “Damn right we will” pass legislation, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders told reporters this week. “There is a process called reconciliation.”

Gonzales: A Lesson in Power
The unifying strand in conservatism as a movement and the GOP as a political operation is a superficial desire to limit and eschew power. This position is sloganized in exhortations against “big government,” against “socialism,” against the noxious fumes of power. But movement conservatives, like their political counterparts, are quite all right with both the consolidation and exercise of virtually unlimited power, so long as it does not upset arrangements from which they benefit, or when the enemy is to their right. […] Corporations, not the federal government, have imposed control and censorship over American life while sponsoring the rise of “socialism” and the acceleration of cancel culture. What’s more, capital doesn’t mind government intervention in economic, social, and cultural life but instead welcomes and profits from those intrusions. This much is obvious, but the GOP refuses to do more than occasionally gripe about it. And when Republican officials do object, it’s often with stale talking points provided by what is now an utterly obsolete conservative commentariat. David French, a senior editor at The Dispatch, welcomes treating some 74.2 million Americans . . .[…] Strip away the platitudes, and the conservative movement is actually obsessed with power and prestige for pet causes, most of which are petty, and some are even harmful to the “values” it claims to uphold. Conservatives are never happier to break bread with their supposed opponents on the Left than when it comes to mocking and now persecuting unwashed Middle America. […] By contrast, Democrats—and the Left in general—are visionary, largely unified, decisive, and ruthless. […] The lesson the Right must learn now—or it never will—is . . .

CHINA: AMERICA’S MORTAL ENEMY

Ellis: Biden’s Advisors Are Wrong: America Shouldn’t Partner with China in Space
Joseph R. Biden’s space advisors have urged him to cooperate with the People’s Republic of China on space exploration. Doing so would be catastrophic for NASA and America’s national security. Biden’s team argues that normalizing space relations with China will make the authoritarian regime less hostile to the United States’ interests. This line of thinking ignores history and China’s predatory space ambitions. It would fast-track Chinese espionage and militarization of Earth’s low orbit, diminishing America’s space exploration for future generations.

Chang: China Doesn’t Have to Lift a Finger to Push Biden Around
The Biden administration has just endorsed one of China’s most vicious attack lines against the United States. The new administration’s actions look as if they are setting a pattern for its responses to Beijing on the disease and other matters. On January 26, Biden signed his executive order titled “Memorandum Condemning and Combating Racism, Xenophobia, and Intolerance Against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States.” The order states that during the coronavirus pandemic “inflammatory and xenophobic rhetoric has put Asian American and Pacific Islander persons, families, communities, and businesses at risk.” There is nothing wrong with protecting minorities from racism, but racism is not the problem. “Political correctness presages policy incorrectness,” writes the Claremont Institute’s Ben Weingarten on the Newsweek site, commenting on Biden’s executive order. “And when it comes to matters of life and limb, political correctness can kill.” Weingarten is correct.
