Sen. Cruz: ‘Corrupt Politicians Act’ Would Strike Down States’ Voter Integrity Laws, Including ID Requirements
The U.S. Senate on this Tuesday will take up a bill that Democrats call the “for the people act,” and Republicans call “the corrupt politicians act.” HR-1, or S-1 in the Senate, would eliminate state voter ID laws, expand universal mail-in balloting and ballot harvesting, among other provisions to exert federal control over elections that are run by the individual states. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said he considers S-1 “the single most dangerous piece of legislation before the United States Congress.”

Saavedra: Ron DeSantis Signs Bill Banning Local Governments From Implementing Their Own Gun Control Laws
DeSantis signed the bill on Friday, but news of its signing broke on Monday. The bill expands on an existing law in the state that restricts local governments from enacting their own gun control regulations. “The bill, which will take effect July 1, will broaden a 2011 law that can make local governments pay as much as $100,000 in damages if they are sued for imposing gun regulations,” Sun Sentinel reported. “DeSantis signed the bill about a month after a panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal upheld the 2011 law that threatens penalties if cities and counties approve gun regulations.”

Indeed, the reactions coming out of Washington to the Arab violence in Jerusalem indicate that Israel will be hard-pressed to conduct a constructive dialogue with Washington about anything, and that this will be the case regardless of who forms the next Israeli government. On Saturday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) published a shocking post on her Twitter account in response to the Arab riots in Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, which started in earnest last Thursday. The progressive powerhouse wrote . . . Warren’s statement isn’t a demand for justice for Arabs. It is a demand for injustice for Jews.

Klein: Biden Administration Supports Globalist Version of Multilateralism at the UN
U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken delivered virtual remarks on May 7th at the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on Multilateralism. The meeting was chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on behalf of China, which is this month’s president of the Security Council. Blinken spewed forth the same old same old Biden administration rhetoric about the critical importance of an international “rules-based order” and the administration’s commitment to multilateralism. Blinken criticized nations that he said violate the human rights of their own people and commit other transgressions against sovereign nations. Without naming Russia, China, or Iran specifically, Blinken said that the U.S. under Biden would push back against nations that break the international “rules-based order.” So far, the Biden administration has shown only fecklessness in its desire to be a full-fledged member of the globalist UN community.
Blinken delivered an apology of sorts in what was an obvious slap at the Trump administration and its America First policies. “I know that some of our actions in recent years have undermined the rules-based order and led others to question whether we are still committed to it,” he said. And then Blinken tried to show how different things will be with Joe Biden in the White House. That’s the problem.

Piro: Biden HHS Rolls Back Religious Conscience Protections for Doctors
The Biden administration adopted a new rule Monday that could force Catholic hospitals, religious doctors, and other objectors to perform sex changes. The Department of Health and Human Services announced it will expand its definition of sex discrimination to include gender identity and sexual orientation, citing the Supreme Court’s controversial 2020 decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, which protected employees from discrimination on the basis of being gay or transgender. “The Supreme Court has made clear that people have a right not to be discriminated against on the basis of sex and receive equal treatment under the law, no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation,” Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra said in a statement. “That’s why today HHS announced it will act on related reports of discrimination.” The new guidance from the Biden administration rolls back Trump administration guidelines that used biology to determine sex discrimination in an effort to protect the conscience rights of medical providers.

Davidson: Republicans Aren’t Obsessed With Critical Race Theory, White Democrats Are
Do Republicans have an “obsession” with or a “fixation” on critical race theory? The Atlantic’s Adam Harris sure thinks so. He penned an article last week explaining this supposed obsession, making note of various GOP bills in state legislatures and Congress that would prohibit the teaching of critical race theory in public schools, or bar government contractors from training that promotes “division between, resentment of, or social justice for” groups based on race, sex, or political affiliation, as one bill passed by the Arkansas legislature put it. “For Republicans,” wrote Harris, “the end goal of all these bills is clear: initiating another battle in the culture wars and holding on to some threadbare mythology of the nation that has been challenged in recent years.” The GOP, he adds, is “fixated” on nothing more than an “academic approach.” But critical race theory isn’t just an academic approach, and Republicans aren’t the ones who initiated this battle. They’re responding — rather mildly, given the stakes — to an aggressive, long-term campaign on the left to ratchet up racial tension, divide Americans by race, and insert frankly racist ideas into every facet of public life as part of a larger strategy to gain and wield political power.

McCann: The ‘Woke’ Follies
The genesis of this pretentious mindset is the insatiable need by many to find meaning and relevance in their apparently vacuous and cosseted lives. This is particularly true among many born between 1960 and 2000. Some years ago, I watched an excerpt of a panel discussion with a number of middle-aged professors at a prestigious Ivy League university. These academics were regaling the naïve and worshipful audience, overwhelmingly female, about the necessity of viewing the LGTBQ movement as this generation’s national civil rights battle (equivalent to the abolishing of slavery). The tirades against a racist and imbecilic patriarchy marinated in white privilege were incessant. These Leftists claimed that this privilege and imbecility required the immediate acceleration of the transformation of the United States into a socialist nirvana through any means that would ostracize, intimidate, and muzzle all who disagreed that these were “civil rights” worthy of national imposition. The adoring and reverential expressions on the faces of the young women and the few men in the audience was priceless. It was as if they had suddenly discovered meaning and purpose in their apparently meaningless and sheltered lives. […] So, here are the “rights” now defined as equivalent to the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, and the elimination of institutionalized racism and, if not enacted, the rationale for the unquestioned necessity of instituting a one-party socialist oligarchy: A. Many are choosing to be identified and defined by what they do in their bedroom. By doing so a new civil right is triggered that includes government sanctioned preferential treatment and legal preferred status except for those with the wrong political affiliation and race as per item (D) below. That they do so with an angry sense of holy mission which appals many average citizens. A truly oddball aspect of the Woke is they seem to believe they are on a divine mission, despite typically being secular atheists. Here, one cannot avoid this fact—Woke own a Cargo Cult approach to the sacred—by assuming a religious format without any spiritual depth. Assuming the form of priests while bedeviling others. Biblical sin is deviation from God’s will, but defeated by Christ on the cross. Woke Punishment: Everyone knows how the Woke pursue those they dislike.

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted lives the world over for more than a year. Its death toll will soon reach three million people. Yet the origin of pandemic remains uncertain: the political agendas of governments and scientists have generated thick clouds of obfuscation, which the mainstream press seems helpless to dispel. In what follows I will sort through the available scientific facts, which hold many clues as to what happened, and provide readers with the evidence to make their own judgments. I will then try to assess the complex issue of blame, which starts with, but extends far beyond, the government of China. […] 4. The US Role in Funding the Wuhan Institute of Virology […] The responsibility of the NIAID and NIH is even more acute because for the first three years of the grant to EcoHealth Alliance there was a moratorium on funding gain-of-function research. Why didn’t the two agencies therefore halt the Federal funding as apparently required to do so by law? Because someone wrote a loophole into the moratorium. The moratorium specifically barred funding any gain-of-function research that increased the pathogenicity of the flu, MERS or SARS viruses. But then a footnote on p.2 of the moratorium document states that “An exception from the research pause may be obtained if the head of the USG funding agency determines that the research is urgently necessary to protect the public health or national security.” This seems to mean that either the director of the NIAID, Dr. Anthony Fauci, or the director of the NIH, Dr. Francis Collins, or maybe both, would have invoked the footnote in order to keep the money flowing to Dr. Shi’s gain-of-function research. […] According to Dr. Ebright, both Dr. Collins and Dr. Fauci “have declined to flag and forward proposals for risk-benefit review, thereby nullifying the P3CO Framework.”
In his view, the two officials, in dealing with the moratorium and the ensuing reporting system, “have systematically thwarted efforts by the White House, the Congress, scientists, and science policy specialists to regulate GoF [gain-of-function] research of concern.”

Even as vaccination increases across the United States and an end to the tragedy of the Covid-19 pandemic seems in sight, the economic, fiscal, political, and geographic fallout from the virus cannot be overstated: a massive public health crisis that left more than half a million Americans dead, an economic catastrophe that caused record unemployment and small-business closures, and a seismic political event that surely helped tip the presidential election. The pandemic will pass, and the economy will revive, as it is already doing. But in geographic terms, today’s Covid-precipitated crises may well prove to be the most transformative event that America has experienced since the great migration to the suburbs after World War II. After hitting record lows, mobility is up as a result of the pandemic. Between 14 million and 23 million Americans say that they are likely to move as a result of their ability to work remotely, according to research by economist Adam Ozimek. These geographic shifts are even more critical because they point in many directions and represent less a fundamental break with the past and more an acceleration of changes already under way in how we live and work.
