Richardson: Texas House votes to approve arrest warrants for wayward Democrats
The Texas House voted Tuesday to send law enforcement to bring back Democratic legislators who fled the state on chartered jets to block a vote on a GOP elections bill in a political showdown playing out on the national stage. The 76-4 vote to compel attendance “under warrant of arrest, if necessary” was held shortly after about 60 Democrats failed to appear at the 10 a.m. session, leaving the Republican-controlled chamber short of a quorum with just 80 members, only four of whom were Democrats.

Wayt: Peter Thiel protege Blake Masters launches US Senate run in Arizona
An executive at Peter Thiel’s venture capital fund is running for a US Senate seat with $10 million in backing from his boss. Blake Masters, the 34-year-old chief operating officer at investment firm Thiel Capital and a former protege of the billionaire at Stanford, announced Monday that he is running as a Republican to unseat Arizona Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly in 2022. In his campaign launch, Masters pledged to “completely end illegal immigration” and fight “indoctrination” in the school system.

The Chinese are warning about an impending nuclear war if the United States does not cease its investigation into the origins of the COVID pandemic. They warn that the Americans must call off their probe into the sources of the disease — a warning which has prompted many American analysts to conclude that the leaders in Beijing fear discovery of the truth: that they — the Chinese Communists — are the source of the pandemic. The Chinese Communists have long experimented with bioweapons, and have apparently continued the nasty habit, both recruiting Western scientists and putting them to work on Chinese projects, and smuggling Westerners into projects within China itself. One of the world’s top China experts, British citizen Roger Garside, foresees a mounting crisis, since Beijing will have to confront a triple whammy: a financial crisis, a moral vacuum, and widespread corruption. In an interview he gave recently about his new book, Garside summarized the situation grimly: China is outwardly strong but inwardly weak.

Rich in copper, lithium, marble, gold and uranium, Afghanistan’s mineral wealth has been estimated to exceed in excess of $1 trillion, resources that could easily make the country economically self-sufficient if ever they were to be fully developed. From China’s perspective, access to Afghanistan’s mineral riches would provide it with a ready supply of valuable minerals that are deemed vital to the ruling Communist party’s long-term aim of becoming the world’s pre-eminent economic power.

The $3.5trillion plan includes spending for climate change, health care and family-service programs sought by President Joe Biden. Democrats will seek to bypass a Republican filibuster by winning passage through budget reconciliation. Reconciliation only requires a simple majority in the Senate. With the upper chamber at a 50-50 tie between Republicans and Democrats, Vice President Kamala Harris can cast the tie-breaking vote. […] If congressional Democrats rally behind the proposal and turn it into a budget resolution they can push through Congress in coming weeks, it would help them enact a subsequent, sweeping bill that would actually fund their priorities.

Carney: Producer Price Inflation Surges 7.3%, Higher Than Expected
Prices received by U.S. businesses for goods and services rose by much more than expected in June, the Labor Department reported Tuesday. The Producer Price Index rose 7.3 percent in June from 12 months earlier, the largest demand since 12-month data were first introduced in 2010. Compared with May, the index rose one percent. On average, this index rose by around 0.2 percent per month in the pre-pandemic Trump administration.Economists had been expecting an increase of 0.6 percent, below the 0.8 percent initially reported for May. On a 12-month basis, the consensus forecast was for 6.8 percent.

In an impassioned speech today (or what passes for one in his current condition), Joe Biden claimed that the voting laws being passed and/or considered by some Republican controlled state legislatures such as Georgia’s pose “the most dangerous threat to voting and the integrity of free and fair elections in our history.” This claim isn’t just false, it’s absurd. Biden doesn’t know much about history, but he’s surely aware that there was a time in the last century when Blacks in some states had to answer difficult questions to the satisfaction of racist local officials to be able to vote. And even if they passed these tests, they might be shot at or even killed for exercising their right to vote. (All of this and more is set forth in excruciating detail by Robert Caro in his biography of Lyndon Johnson.) Now, all Blacks have to do is prove they are who they say they are — same as Whites and everyone else. More than 80 percent of Americans support this common sense requirement. More than 60 percent of Democrats do. (The numbers are 75 and 60 percent in a different poll.) Moreover, 69 percent of Blacks support voter id laws.

Goldstein: Big Tech are State Actors
A ‘state actor’ is a private company that either acts on behalf of the government or has other special relationships with the government, which subject it to constitutional restrictions on government, including the First Amendment. Google’s YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter have been state actors since about 2010. They claimed to be neutral, non-discriminating in their political and scientific views, and denied any political bias—until about a year ago. Then they reversed the narrative and said that they are private companies that can discriminate against whomever they want. I can list half a dozen ways in which they are state actors. The pressure on them from Democrat officials, asserted by Trump in his lawsuit, is one of them. Obamanet, or net neutrality, is another one. But most obviously, they became state actors when federal and state government agencies opened accounts on their platforms and started to use them for interaction with the public. By accepting (and luring) multiple government accounts, they became public forums and state actors. A few days ago, the Supreme Court refused to review the ruling in Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University v. Trump, No. 18-1691 (2d Cir. 2019). In it, the district court ruled, and the 2nd Circuit Appellate Court upheld, that each tweet from a government account opens a public forum, and the government cannot block citizens from participating in it. Most of the legal wrangling was over whether the @realDonaldTrump account was a governmental one for the purposes of the First Amendment. It was despite being hosted on a putatively private platform. Last week they were reporting 6,985 deaths, and this week that number jumped up 2,043 to 9,048.
