Previously, we were led to believe that the FBI “disrupted” the plot. But according to BuzzFeed, the FBI had more actors in the conspiracy than actual arrestees—there were 12 “informants” for the six arrested suspects. Why would it take 12 “informants,” to gather information on six people? Students of the FBI knew exactly what this meant: A “Truman Show”-style operation in which the FBI stages almost every aspect of a conspiracy to entice suspects into committing an arrestable crime.

Last week, big media was salivating over the COVID Delta variant and recommendations for indoor masking, even for the vaccinated, masking young children, and the possibility of a return to last year, with social distancing, capacity limits, and business closures. There were also news stories that the media dutifully ignored, like ongoing election audits, Hunter Biden’s laptop, his father’s growing inability to think and speak coherently, and growing inflation and unemployment. Also somehow missed by the investigative sleuths at CNN and MSNBC was the recall of a COVID rapid antigen test last month. This wasn’t just any recall but according to the FDA a serious one, “The FDA has identified this as a Class I recall, the most serious type of recall. Use of these devices may cause serious injuries or death.” That’s an understatement.

[…] Facebook, Twitter, Google and Microsoft are all partnering with the intelligence apparatus. I can’t believe they admit this sentence in the release (emphasis mine): […] “The Group will use lists from intelligence-sharing group Five Eyes adding URLs and PDFs from more groups, including the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters and neo-Nazis.” Think about that sentence structure very carefully. They are “adding to” the pre-existing list…. admitting the group (aka Big Tech) already have access to the the intelligence-sharing database… and also admitting there is a pre-existing list created by the Five Eyes consortium.

Masugi: Do Conservatives Own the Supreme Court?
A leading opinion celebrated in conservative circles is that conservatives now own the Supreme Court. But it seems premature to celebrate. David Rivkin and Andrew Grossman recently summed up their case for an existing conservative Supreme Court majority with honor and praise going to the “conservative legal movement that produced the court’s majority.” Unfortunately, their arguments may deceive readers about what has actually been achieved in the high court and why it will prove wanting. Despite its fundamental flaws, the essay should be taken with utmost seriousness, for Rivkin, the senior writer, has been for decades one of the most insightful observers of the court. Politically, however, Rivkin and Grossman (as well as conservative jurists) are at a disadvantage if they attempt to fight contemporary judicial wars with mid-20th century legal weapons. I speak here of notions such as a “jurisprudence of restraint” and opposition to “judicial activism.” […] None od the devices Rivkin praises are of much use in a culture that sees law as simply an expression of power and judging as an exercise in power.

Sadler: AZ school district issues, then retracts consent form to quiz kids about private family info
An Arizona school district is backtracking after raising the ire of parents with controversial language in a parental consent form authorizing student health screenings. The district says the wording was “a complete mistake.” In a notification requesting parental sign-off for student emotional health and wellness screenings, the Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) appeared to suggest it would ask children to reveal private family information including “quality of home and interpersonal relationships, student biometric information,” and the family’s “gun/ammunition ownership.” […] Parents who signed the annual verification packet were, according to the notification, granting SUSD permission “to collect personal information including but not limited to income or other family information, medical history or medical information, mental health history or mental health information, and quality of home and interpersonal relationships, student biometric information, or illegal, antisocial, or self-incriminating behavior critical appraisal of individuals within a close relationship and gun/ammunition ownership.”

Neill: China’s Weaponized Fishing Fleet
Japan started recording derelict North Korean fishing vessels washing ashore in 2011, according to reporting by CNN’s Hilary Whiteman and Mairi Mackay. Since then, 63 on average of the “ghost ships” have annually come ashore. Most are empty, but some contain dead bodies and occasionally a skeletal crew. Generally, the ships are old, underpowered, and lacking GPS. Initially, authorities assumed the vessels belonged to crews who were trying to defect from North Korea. Or “climate change” had caused the squids to move away from North Korean shores forcing the fishermen to travel dangerously far out to sea, where they died from exposure. But by using satellite data, a team of researchers from the conservation group Global Fishing Watch pieced together the most likely explanation, as reported in last year’s NBC article “Ghost Ships“: China is sending a previously invisible armada of industrial boats to illegally fish in North Korean waters, violently displacing smaller North Korean boats and spearheading a decline in once-abundant squid stocks of more than 70 percent. In March 2020, the United Nations received anonymous reports . . .[…] The reported number of incidents of illegal fishing by Chinese ships has skyrocketed. Especially disturbing were the 340 Chinese vessels fishing near the environmentally fragile Galápagos Islands. Blake Herzinger reported for Foreign Policy about the Chinese fishing practices: . . . Kimball: Losing Our Liberty All at Once?
Friedrich Hayek took one of the two epigraphs for The Road to Serfdom from David Hume (the other, like Hayek’s title, came from Tocqueville). “It is seldom,” Hume wrote, “that liberty of any kind is lost all at once.” Much as I admire Hume, I wonder whether he got this quite right. Sometimes, I would argue, liberty is erased almost instantaneously. I’d be willing to wager that Joseph Hackett, confronted with Hume’s observation, would express similar doubts. I would be happy to ask Hackett myself, but he is inaccessible. If the ironically titled “Department of Justice” has its way, he will be inaccessible for a long, long time. Perhaps as long as 20 years. Joseph Hackett, you see, is a 51-year-old Trump supporter and member of an organization called the “Oath Keepers,” a group whose members have pledged to “defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.” (You can see how this ends already, can’t you?) The FBI does not like the Oath Keepers. They arrested its leader in January and have picked up many other members in the months since. Hackett came from his home in Florida to join the Trump “Stop the Steal” rally that took place on January 6. According to court documents, he entered the Capitol at 2:45 that afternoon. He left some ten minutes later, at 2:54. The next day, he went home. On May 28, he was apprehended by the FBI and indicted on a long list of charges, including conspiracy, obstruction of an official proceeding, destruction of government property, and illegally entering a restricted building.
