In the first case—anticipated to have applied to approximately 84 million employees—and by a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court in National Federation of Independent Business v. OSHA stayed the implementation of the vaccination mandate that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration had issued in November 2021, requiring all businesses with 100 or more employees (with very limited exceptions) to direct their employees be vaccinated against COVID-19 or wear a mask at work and provide weekly negative tests for the disease. In an unsigned opinion, the majority concluded that the government was not likely to prevail on its argument that OSHA possesses the authority to issue the vaccination mandate. It wrote that neither OSHA nor Congress had ever imposed such a requirement and that, “although Congress has enacted significant legislation addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, it has declined to enact any measure similar to what OSHA has promulgated here.” “As its name suggests,” the court explained, . . . Gangitano: Biden calls on employers to mandate vaccines despite Supreme Court ruling

The Republican National Committee said Thursday it is planning a rules change that would force presidential candidates seeking the party’s nomination to sign a pledge saying they will not participate in any debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates. The party is seeking an alternative partner and cited concerns with moderators selected by the debate commission, a desire for a debate before early voting starts and changes to the commission’s board, RNC spokesperson Danielle Alvarez said. A discussion about the proposal is set to take place at the party’s winter meeting.

Johnson: A Wisconsin judge rules absentee ballot drop boxes are not allowed under state law
A Waukesha County judge has ruled that absentee ballot drop boxes are not allowed under Wisconsin law, a ruling that could potentially remove an option for voting ahead of the state’s crucial midterm elections. Ruling from the bench Thursday, Circuit Court Judge Michael Bohren ordered the Wisconsin Elections Commission to rescind its guidance to clerks on how to use the drop boxes, saying the WEC had exceeded its authority when it issued the recommendations. “In looking at the statutes, there is no specific authorization for drop boxes,” Bohren said.

Giordano: Top NH Conservative Targeted by Child Services for Giving Son Ivermectin
One of New Hampshire’s leading political conservatives is fighting to keep his children from the state’s child protection services agency after giving his 13-year-old son ivermectin. JR Hoell is the founder of ReOpen NH, an activist group that criticizes COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Hoell, who has also led public education reform efforts and promotes Second Amendment and homeschooling rights, told The Epoch Times that the New Hampshire Division of Children Youth and Family (DCYF) showed up at his doorstep on the night of Dec. 9 with an emergency ex parte order to take custody of his son.
“I want to go on the record as calling the DCYF a terrorist organization,” Hoell told The Epoch Times, “they have no grounds to seek removal of my son from his home.” […]  The emergency order, a copy of which was provided to The Epoch Times, claimed the  teen “was at risk of coma or death due to the amount of ivermectin administered to him.” At that point in time, it had been nearly two weeks since his son had taken any ivermectin, according to Hoell.  The entire family used pharmacy-grade Ivermectin he ordered online from an international company to treat COVID back in November. By the time the DCYF sought his children, all the family members had already returned to their daily routines, according to Hoell. It was a nurse practitioner who saw Hoell’s son for a routine follow-up exam on the morning of Dec. 9 that called the DCYF on Hoell.

Sundance: Final Goods Producer Price Index Rises 9.7 Percent in December, Highest Rate of Inflation Since Records Began
Unfortunately, the upward trend is continuing unabated.  The “producer price index” is essentially the tracking of wholesale prices at three stages: Origination (commodity), Intermediate (processing), and then Final (to wholesale).  Today, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) released December price data [Available Here] showing a dramatic 9.7% increase year-over-year in Final Demand products at the wholesale level. I’m not going to beat this dead horse {Go Deep Here}, except to point out a few even larger warning signs that are evident.    Suffice to say, despite the spin likely from defenders of the White House occupant, the inflation impact is continuing exactly as we would expect. The monthly price increase was 0.2% which would under normal circumstances give the impression that price pressure for the month was lower than previous.  However, there’s a key component clouding the problem.

Frohnen: Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine, & the Birth of Right and Left [The Great Debate by Yuval Levin ]
Those seeking a deeper understanding of the roots of contemporary political debates, with all their recriminations and mutual misunderstandings, could hardly do better than to examine the “great debate” between Edmund Burke and Thomas Paine occasioned by the French Revolution. Burke was the Irish orator, philosopher and statesman who founded modern conservatism. Paine was the firebrand journalist and “citizen of the world” who did so much to support the American cause in the war for independence, then sought to spread what he perceived as the principles of that revolution to France and England. For a learned and insightful introduction to that debate, and for important insights into the nature and presuppositions on both sides thereof, as well as the ways in which that debate has influenced contemporary political thought and action, they could hardly do better than Yuval Levin’s fine book. In his unremittingly civil and fair-minded work, Mr. Levin provides sympathetic biographies of both Burke and Paine. He also delves deeply, and with great clarity, into the conflict of principles and assumptions that made the French Revolution and reaction to it the foundation of the contrasting visions of politics and public life shaping so much of the contemporary world.
