Shurk: Were You Better Off with Trump?
In the final days before what appeared to be a neck-and-neck 1980 election, Republican Ronald Reagan landed a haymaker against President Carter by asking a simple question: “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?”  Americans were not, and Reagan ended up beating the incumbent Democrat in a drubbing — carrying forty-four states, taking 489 electoral votes, and winning the popular vote by nearly ten percent.  Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan — Make America Great Again! — will be remembered as one of the most effective rallying calls in political history.  As we near what looks like his return to battle for the 2024 election, though, a potent six-word slogan reminiscent of Reagan’s rhetorical thwack is inescapable: Were you better off with Trump? Only one incumbent president before Trump ever won significantly more votes on the way to losing re-election.  That president, Grover Cleveland, left office in 1889 amid allegations that fraudulent balloting in several states had secured his opponent Benjamin Harrison’s victory, and four years later, President Cleveland returned to the White House after decisively defeating Harrison in a rematch.  The 22nd and 24th president of the United States is the only man to serve two non-consecutive terms.  If that changes in 2024, it will reflect the fact that, as with Cleveland, President Trump did remarkably better with the electorate the second time around, only to be handed his walking papers.

Lendrum: Arizona Governor Signs Bill Requiring Proof of Citizenship to Vote
On Wednesday, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey (R-Ariz.) signed an election integrity bill which aims to crack down on illegal aliens voting in American elections. As reported by CNN, the state of Arizona already has laws in place to prevent illegal aliens from voting in state elections, requiring proof of citizenship in order to do so. But the new legislation, H.B. 2492, extends those requirements to participation in federal elections as well. With Governor Ducey’s signature, the new law overrides a previous law which did not require proof of citizenship, but instead simply asked potential voters to swear, under penalty of perjury, that they were citizens prior to casting a vote in federal elections. Under the new law, voters who submit a federal registration form without proof of citizenship must be vetted by state election officials; any official who fails to verify the citizenship status of a potential illegal alien could face felony charges.

Mittlestadt: Over 60,000 voters on NC rolls are dead, registered twice or enrolled in other state, report warns
The report released Tuesday by the Public Interest Legal Foundation, a nonprofit law firm focused on election integrity, in one example found 7,933 North Carolinians are still registered to vote after having died in 2020. “North Carolina officials need to use the time they still have to prepare voter rolls for the midterm elections,” foundation President J. Christian Adams said. “Time is running out. Silly, obvious errors in the voter roll can create opportunities for voter fraud and chaos in a close election. Correcting deceased and duplicate records now will help to preemptively address those risks.”
Primary balloting in the state begins May 17.

The aim of such propaganda is to praise China and demean the West, according to the AP. More than 200 influencers communicating in 38 different languages have been found to have ties to the CCP, according to a report from the research firm Miburo.

VDH: History Should Be Our Guide in Ukraine
here are several historical referents we should keep in mind about the Ukraine war. First, no-fly zones. Lots of Westerners are calling for NATO aircraft to establish a no-fly zone above Ukraine to stop Russian bombing of Ukrainian cities. That is a terrible idea. Russian planes can still launch missiles from the nearby airspace of Russia and Belarus. No nation in history has declared a no-fly zone against an adversarial nuclear power. No-fly zones are best known from the 12-year air block over Iraq in between the two Gulf Wars. NATO also imposed a no-fly zone over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1990s, and again over Libya in 2011.  These efforts were aimed respectively at the bloody though small-time dictators Saddam Hussein, Slobodan Milošević, and Muammar Gaddafi. None had nuclear weapons. Eventually the air patrols withered away. Often allies bickered about their relative contributions. Sometimes the zones failed to stop ongoing anarchy on the ground. Enemies often still used low-flying ground assault helicopters. The United States never attempted a no-fly zone against either nuclear Russia or China during the Cold War—despite a long history of these countries supplying wartime enemies of ours.

Campaigning, he’d challenge questioners to push-up contests, jam fingers in the sternums even of supporters, and plunge into rambling monologues about leg hairs and chain-fights. Now, the president’s face is often a mask of terror, like a man unsure of how he came to be standing in the middle of an intersection. Mental cars racing past, he met the press Monday, to clarify a statement made last week about Vladimir Putin: “For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power.” Many interpreted this as a call for regime change. The facts in many of these cases are far more heinous, and brutal – even in the cases involving teenagers. […]  The other child pornography cases overseen by Jackson do not involve teenagers. Republican state attorneys general are sounding alarms about money management and left-wing bias at the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG). The flagship organization for top state legal officers controls tens of millions of dollars in settlement funds, which it disperses to support consumer protection training and enforcement. Some Republican attorneys general fear those accounts are turning into left-wing litigation slush funds as NAAG’s programming grows increasingly progressive. “It looks to me like an organization that’s really lost its way,” Montana attorney general Austin Knudsen (R.) told the Washington Free Beacon. “I don’t think it’s nonpartisan anymore. By all accounts it looks like it’s gotten quite partisan.” Knudsen says he’s questioning whether Montana is well served by NAAG membership, which costs tens of thousands of dollars annually. You’ve heard about the dangers of secondhand cigarette smoke, but what about secondhand bong smoke?  The haze after a bubbly bong hit may appear harmless, but a new study published Wednesday in JAMA Network Open found bystanders may be inhaling air pollutants at concentrations more than twice federal air quality limits. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, measured fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in a real-world setting where a group of young adults socially smoked cannabis with a bong for two hours in an ordinary household living room. An aerosol monitor was placed where a nonsmoker might sit, recording PM2.5 levels before, during and after eight sessions.

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff, on March 22, at approximately 5:14 pm, officials at Rosemont High School in the Sacramento City Unified School District reported that they had discovered the “All n*ggers should die” scrawled in pencil on the wall of a second-floor hallway in the school building.
Security footage obtained by school officials showed two juvenile black females writing the phrase on the wall, according to the Sheriff’s office.

Our survival instincts are going to get us all killed. I’m specifically referring to our hard-wired conformity impulse. That’s what causes us to go along with politically correct absurdities like pronoun protocols. It also causes people to join mobs, and to drink cyanide-laced Kool-Aid at the command of a cult leader.
In primitive environments, the herd instinct serves as a means of survival. If some sense danger and rush to safety, all follow. But how does such a conformity impulse work in a high-tech society like ours? It doesn’t really.  […] We should be aghast at the high level of American conformity to the demands of propagandists: Mask your toddler! He’s a girl and she’s a guy! Mind your pronouns! He’s a white supremacist! And so on. Nobody is safe if we can’t challenge the truth of what the elites who presume to rule us are saying. Meanwhile, they keep pushing the envelope to get us to say things we know are false and to do things against our own interests. Demonizing those who hesitate to comply fosters a mob mindset that protects their narratives. Hence, people with different views feel alone and tend to be intimidated into silence. This is how resistance to tyranny is eroded. Demonization campaigns are key to this process. Suddenly, you’re a bigot if you don’t celebrate men invading women’s sports. Or you’re an “insurrectionist” if you don’t applaud punishing people with 24/7 solitary confinement (without a trial date) for “parading” around the Capitol for a few hours on January 6, 2021. Or you’re selfish if your toddler . . . […]  Nobel Laureate Doris Lessing once observed that people are dangerously ignorant of the laws of mob psychology. In 1987 she recommended everyone be schooled in them, especially children. She speculated that power elites are invested in such ignorance. If such knowledge were widely understood, people would be insulated from the manipulations of propagandists. […] When we start self-censoring because we’re afraid of not fitting in, we open the door to oppression and social chaos. That unchecked urge to “fit in” can kill us all, and we need to stop.

The subjects—or “teachers”—were instructed to administer electroshocks to a human “learner,” with the shocks becoming progressively more powerful and painful. Controversial but now strongly vindicated by the scientific community, these experiments attempted to determine to what extent people will obey orders from authority figures regardless of consequences. “Milgram’s experiments on obedience have made us more aware of the dangers of uncritically accepting authority,” wrote Peter Singer in the New York Times Book Review.
