As Congress comes back into session with a packed agenda, Senate Republicans are pursuing legislation that could undo former President Trump’s trade policies toward China. Last year, the House and the Senate passed two different bills related to America’s China trade policy: the House passed the America COMPETES bill, and the Senate passed the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (USICA). The trade provisions in the COMPETES bill have been widely praised by institutions that share Trump’s economic approach to China. Despite being Democrat-sponsored legislation, COMPETES has earned praise from such institutions because, for one, it would close the so called de minimis loophole for Chinese imports. The de minimis loophole allows shipments with a declared value under $800 to enter the U.S. tariff-free, which Chinese importers have used to their advantage. Furthermore, COMPETES would shore up the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill by making eligible for tariff reductions only those intermediate goods which go into final products produced in the United States. There were plenty of reasons why Republicans objected to COMPETES, mostly related to the bill’s non-trade provisions. […] Last June, the USICA passed easily in the Senate by a vote of 68-32. USICA’s trade section would reinstate 2,200 exemptions for China that the Trump administration stripped away. Specifically, the USICA takes a sledgehammer to Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the president to respond to breaches by foreign countries of U.S. trade agreements or other foreign trade practices deemed improper.[…] Defanging Section 301 and rendering it a domestic legal mechanism for the enforcement of WTO arbitration is the corporate world’s revenge for Trump’s actions against China.

Memos made public under the Freedom of Information Act show Ossoff, a freshman Democrat, fed his planned questions and even suggested an answer to Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristin Clarke ahead of two Senate Judiciary Committee hearings last fall. “Please let me know if you think AAG Clarke would have any trouble answering those (as in, whether it’d be hard for her to give a straight ‘yes’ to those and I can redirect them to someone on the second panel),” Ossoff’s general counsel Sara Schaumburg wrote to Deputy Assistant Attorney General Helaine A. Greenfeld in the department’s Office of Legislative Affairs ahead of the first hearing in early October 2021.

There is no doubt that she is going to undertake her new duties with gusto. And that’s just one more problem with this new Disinformation Governance Board, on top of all the others.

Mittlestadt: FBI warrantless searches of Americans’ data more than doubled from 2020 to 2021, ODNI report

The report released on Thursday explains how U.S. intelligence agencies use Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which allows for surveillance without a warrant of electronic communications data stored by U.S. internet service providers. ODNI pointed out that this year’s report is the first to track the FBI’s use of “unminimized Section 702 collection,” which is raw data that the National Security Agency collects. The FBI used Section 702 to collect data from nearly 3.4 million Americans in 2021, more than double the over 1.3 million in 2020. Those two years are the only ones for which the report provides statistics.

There is no organization with the size, scope, resources and responsibility that are essential for detecting and responding to outbreaks and preventing them from becoming pandemics. he Biden Administration feels that it must now use federal resources to attack “disinformation.” So the Department of Homeland Security recently announced the creation of a “disinformation governance board.” The board’s executive director, Nina Jankowicz, at least has clear qualifications for the post. She previously had spread false rumors on social media that Donald Trump voters would show up at the polls in 2020 armed, and joined the mob’s chorus that Hunter Biden’s laptop was “Russian disinformation.” Perhaps the idea behind her hiring was “it takes one to know one.” Although the new board’s mandate is unclear, the idea seems to be that Jankowicz and her colleagues will use the federal government’s powers to adjudicate what Americans say as either true or false—and to suppress as “disinformation” anything it doesn’t find useful. The new war against “disinformation” follows the narratives of the “insurrection” on January 6, the “democracy dies in darkness” return of Donald Trump, and Vladimir Putin as a mastermind gasoline price-spiker. Such narratives are intended to distract us from the Biden disaster and the ongoing assault against constitutional freedom. When things turn south for the administration, Barack Obama—a sagging Netflix’s $50-million “idea man”—usually emerges from one of his three mansions in Hawaii, Martha’s Vineyard, or Kalorama to lecture clingers and deplorables on various threats they pose to the anointed. His sermons usually project his own transgressions.

It’s in my nature.” The story came to mind this week when the new head of the Disinformation Governance Board, Nina Jankowicz, pledged to protect free speech despite a career dissing and dismissing the right. After withering criticism of her appointment, Jankowicz declared the new board at Homeland Security will “maintain the Dept’s committment [sic] to protecting free speech.” She has spent a career denouncing “first amendment zealots” like myself who believe in a robust view of free speech.

As previously discussed, Jankowicz has made a career as an advocate for public and corporate censorship as well as spreading disinformation. During his recent testimony before Congress, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas informed lawmakers that the Biden administration was considering diverting resources from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to deal with Biden’s border debacle. This includes not just funding but also VA nurses and doctors who are tasked with caring for America’s veterans, and who may now be sent to care for illegal immigrants. Koenig: Texas mother shoots intruder dead after he broke into her home while her three children slept inside: Police say she was within her rights under the state’s Castle Doctrine

The woman, who has not yet been identified but is reportedly in her 30s, was at her San Antonio home with her three children at around 10 p.m. Thursday when she heard the man break in. Police say the man – who was later identified as 41-year-old Roman Rodriguez – entered the home from the rear through the laundry room, which is adjacent to South Side Lions Park, according to News 4 San Antonio. Photos from the scene show a fence around the house also appeared to be broken. At that point, police say, the woman grabbed a gun and shot the home intruder twice in the chest. The man – who was later identified as Roman Rodriguez, 41 – reportedly broke into the house from the rear laundry room and was found bleeding in the backyard.
