Writing on the potential bipartisan gun control law, the level-headed Josh Kraushaar argues the “best way to protect democracy would be for the party in power to seek compromise at the expense of ideological prerogatives” and that leading gun control advocate Chris Murphy was “setting a powerful example of that kind of leadership.” I’m confused as to how assuming zero political risk by taking what you can from Republicans, while offering nothing in return, is a heroic compromise of ideological prerogatives? It is unlikely that a single liberal voter is going to turn on Murphy for convincing 10 Republican senators to concede that guns, rather than underlying cultural and societal forces, are driving mass shootings. It’s not as if Murphy agreed to negotiate for concealed carry reciprocity or the funding programs that train teachers to defend themselves and their students — ideas that lead Republican negotiator Sen. John Cornyn allegedly supports. He gave up nothing. Murphy is already re-tweeting The New York Times’ claim that Democrats got more than they had “hoped for.” The bipartisan deal, says The Washington Post, is just a “first step.” In a day or two, if that, liberals will be back to accusing legal gun owners of being abettors of terrorism and child murder. How bad is the deal? We won’t really know until we see the specifics of the legislation.

A New York City man accused of shooting a woman in a Walmart parking lot in Pennsylvania encountered return fire by another person who was legally carrying a gun, a district attorney has revealed. Christopher Carmona is facing charges including attempted homicide, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a prohibited firearm following the June 1 incident in Pittston Township, outside of Scranton, according to WNEP.

Children are turning up in doctors’ clinics infected with as many as three different types of viruses, in what experts believe is the result of their immune systems being weakened from two years of COVID lockdowns and mask-wearing. Medical staff have come to expect a surge in cases of flu and severe colds during the winter. But they are reporting that there is not the usual downturn as summer approaches – and they suspect it could be due to the strict pandemic practices. Furthermore, some of common strains of the flu appear to have disappeared, flummoxing scientists. Thomas Murray, an infection-control expert and associate professor of pediatrics at Yale, told The Washington Post on Monday that his team was seeing children with combinations of seven common viruses – adenovirus, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus, influenza and parainfluenza, as well as the coronavirus.

Some children were admitted with two viruses and a few with three, he said. ‘That’s not typical for any time of year and certainly not typical in May and June,’ he said. Other strange patterns have emerged. The rhinovirus, known as the common cold, is normally not severe enough to send people to hospital – but now it is.

[…] The professional political left would like nothing more than their victims to be comfortable forgiving them for their openly hostile attacks. Within that dynamic, the abuser is free to repeat the cycle, and make no mistake – they will repeat the cycle, eventually. Actions have consequences. We are not fast to the sentiment of hate; we know the damage that sensibility can create within oneself. However, eventually, reluctantly, decisions are reached. The Montana Air Force base near Great Falls now has a Pride Month and will be spreading “unconscious bias training” which claims that all white people are racist. Malmstrom has had a number of issues. Its nuclear missile unit has failed safety and security inspections, and bungled a response to a “simulated hostile takeover of a silo housing a nuclear missile”. There was also a cheating scandal involving 34 missile launch officers during a nuclear proficiency test and many more who knew about the cheating, but didn’t report it. This was part of a string of problems going back over a decade. Cotton had been in charge of ICBMs at Malmstrom from 2009 to 2011. And he’s gone on climbing the ladder ever since.

Amidst the clamor surrounding the intensive use of coal in China and India, one may not realize that these nations have some of the world’s largest renewable energy installations. In fact, I hail from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu which is often compared to Scandinavia for its large number of wind farms. Accounting for 25 percent of the country’s wind capacity, the state has the largest share of such generating assets in a nation of 1.3 billion people. Yet even Tamil Nadu relies heavily on coal to meet its electricity demands, with power emergencies and blackouts being the order of the day anytime there are shortages of the fuel. It is much the same across the country, where 70 percent of the electricity comes from coal.
