Last week, we reported that the prominent technology news site CNET had been quietly publishing articles generated by an unspecified “AI engine.” […] But we couldn’t help but notice that one of the very same AI-generated articles that Guglielmo highlighted in her post makes a series of boneheaded errors that drag the concept of replacing human writers with AI down to earth. Take this section in the article, which is a basic explainer about compound interest (emphasis ours): It sounds authoritative, but it’s wrong. […] The spokesperson didn’t respond to a question about CNET‘s confidence in the other articles the AI has published to its site. Nine hours later, problem solved: Joe Biden emerges from a basement, incoherent, to take the oath of office. That, people, is hardball — professional, take-no-prisoners electioneering. You may hate that the country is being lost, but you must stand back at the sheer breathtaking gall it reflects. The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to block New York state restrictions limiting the venues in which its concealed carry permit holders may exercise their rights. The single-page miscellaneous order simply read “[t]he application for writ of injunction presented to Justice Sotomayor and by her referred to the Court is denied.” There were no dissenting opinions. Sotomayor NY Concealed Carry order A firearms dealer operating within the state had petitioned the court to block the law’s implementation, which state lawmakers passed after the high court previously struck down New York’s “proper cause” requirement that a concealed carry permit applicant demonstrate a special need to carry a firearm.

A federal judge dismissed efforts by a homosexual advocacy group to strip religious liberty protections from Christian and other religious universities. Judge Ann Aiken ruled on January 12 in favor of Christian colleges and against the Religious Exemption Accountability Project. The group sought to force Christian colleges to accept men into women’s locker rooms and embrace other parts of the LGBT agenda. Such exemptions allow religious universities to prohibit students from being in homosexual relationships, for example. […] “A federal district court today rightly rejected an unfounded assault on the religious freedom of faith-based educational institutions,” ADF attorney David Cortman stated in a news release. “Title IX, which applies to schools receiving federal financial assistance, explicitly protects the freedom of religious schools to live out their deeply and sincerely held convictions.” “A group of activists asked the court to strip that protection away from schools that educate the next generation and advance the common good,” the attorney stated. “The court correctly concluded that Title IX’s religious liberty exemption doesn’t violate any of the plaintiffs’ claimed rights.”

This latest list marks Biden’s 29th round of nominees for federal judicial positions, bringing the number of announced federal judicial nominees to 154 since the start of his presidency. The ATF issued its final rule Friday that will treat guns with stabilizing accessories like short-barreled rifles, which require a federal license to own under the National Firearms Act. Attorney General Merrick Garland said the ruling enhances public safety, but Gaetz said it unfairly punishes disabled gun owners and veterans who rely on stabilizing braces to be able to fire with one hand. Officials and locals in Yuma, Ariz., say Mexican cartels that smuggle drugs and people into the United States are effectively in control of the southern border, with one person describing the situation as a “ticking time bomb.” The cartels, which charge as much as $20,000 each to help migrants sneak into the US, have been using the ongoing illegal immigration surge to overwhelm Border Patrol officials as they run their lucrative trafficking operations, Yuma County Supervisor Jonathan Lines told Fox News. “This is not a political discussion,” Lines said. “This is a national security issue.”

While the world debates whether the crisis at the southern U.S. border constitutes an invasion, a second front of the invasion has opened up along America’s coastlines. In November, Matt O’Brien of the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) released an investigative report warning that our maritime borders may soon be under assault by would-be migrants in a manner similar what we’re seeing at our southern border. The report cited a rise in waterborne attempts by migrants to enter the United States unlawfully. The report’s warnings were prescient. Entering the United States by sea has long been considered the more dangerous way to enter the country illegally. Additionally, Stop Educator Sexual Abuse Misconduct & Exploitation (SESAME), an organization that works to stop childhood sexual abuse by teachers and other school employees, disclosed that in 2015, about 3.5 million 8th-11th grade students, or nearly 7% of those surveyed divulged that they had experienced “physical sexual contact from an adult” – most often a teacher or coach. The type of physical contact ranged from “unwanted touching of their body, all the way up to sexual intercourse.” Even worse, when other types of sexual misconduct are taken into consideration, such as being shown pornography or being subjected to sexually explicit language or exhibitionism the number increases to about 4.5 million children (10 %). Several recently published studies have provided methodological objections to alarmist IPCC global climate models that predict catastrophic global warming will result from anthropogenic CO2 atmospheric concentrations from burning hydrocarbon fuels. These studies indicate that a more accurate reading of the earth’s surface temperatures suggests global climate warming over the next few decades will be moderate. The studies further indicate that more precise surface temperature readings would seriously dampen the hysterical mass media demand for radical public policies requiring radical decarbonization to achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE) as quickly as possible. In November 2022, meteorologist Roy Spencer, Ph.D., a Principal Research Scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, published a ground-breaking study demonstrating that 36 climate models used to guide national policy may have exaggerated “global warming” over the last 50 years by as much as 50 percent. Specifically, Dr. Spencer utilized “a relatively new global dataset of urbanization changes over the previous 40-year period, 1975-2014, based on Landsat data to determine the average effect urbanization has had on surface temperatures.”

Three mistaken efforts state legislators should avoid. As the 2023–24 legislative session gets underway, a number of states have resolved to make “gender-affirming care” a central focus. In red states, this means restricting the controversial practice or trying to eliminate it altogether. Some states, including Alabama and Arkansas, will be defending previously passed bans in the courts. State efforts to restrict the use of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries to address (apparent) gender-related distress in youth make for good public policy. Yet even lawmakers on the morally and scientifically correct side of an issue risk overstepping by unintentionally proposing harmful or strategically counterproductive regulations. We write to warn of three such mistaken efforts. […] Lawmakers can do much to protect children, restore parental authority, and mitigate the harms of ideological capture in the medical field. One of us, along with Manhattan Institute fellow John Ketcham, recently published an article outlining eight policy proposals states can adopt short of total bans. For states that do wish to pursue bans, the ideal is to limit those bans to minors, use civil rather than criminal penalties, include grandfather clauses for minors already on synthetic hormones, expand statutes of limitations for malpractice liability, and allow for private rights of action (against providers only). Laad: Canada launches drastic new ‘alcohol guidance’ rules

Canada recently updated its alcohol consumption guidelines for 2023. The recommendations are that zero alcohol is the only risk-free approach. A maximum of two drinks each week was deemed low risk. The previous edition of the guidelines recommended a maximum of 10 drinks a week for women and 15 drinks for men. The guidelines also recommend mandatory warning labels for all alcoholic beverages. This is part of a nearly 90-page report, from the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA), that details the health risks associated with what was previously considered low alcohol consumption.
