Natural immunity to disease is, or at least was, a well-known concept in medicine. By disease, I mean viral infections. One can’t develop natural immunity to diseases like diabetes or heart failure. Many of us remember “chicken pox parties” where when one kid was infectious, he or she was invited over to play with your kids, so they all got infected and then they did not have to worry about getting chicken pox again, due to natural immunity. The CDC defines it as follows: “Natural immunity is acquired from exposure to the disease organism through infection with the actual disease.” Contrast this to: “Vaccine-induced immunity is acquired through the introduction of a killed or weakened form of the disease organism through vaccination.” Both can be effective depending on the virus, assuming exposure doesn’t kill you, and the type of vaccine, assuming one exists for that virus. As the CDC describes, “If an immune person comes into contact with that disease in the future, their immune system will recognize it and immediately produce the antibodies needed to fight it. Active immunity is long-lasting, and sometimes life-long.” Yet with the COVID pandemic, this basic and longstanding medical concept became a right-wing, Q-Anon conspiracy theory.

The CDC, Medicare, and Medicaid have introduced ICD (International Classification of Diseases) “diagnosis codes” for being unvaccinated or partially vaccinated for COVID-19, and also for “other under-immunization status.” These new codes, designated ICD-10, quietly went into effect on April 1, 2022, and were broadly adopted nationwide by January 2023, but we are just learning about them now. “Diagnosis” is a word to designate disease. Is being unvaccinated now considered a disease? Will medical and health services provided by insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid be affected by the patient’s vaccination status?
This new move cannot be entirely for health reasons. Recent science shows that natural immunity is more robust than that conferred by vaccines. The reality of “breakthrough infections” demonstrates that a person’s vaccination status is not predictive of whether they will contract or spread the disease. If the tracking were for health reasons alone, they would exclude those who are covid-recovered and have natural immunity. Even more disturbing, . . .

If you are a California conservative, you are probably pretty based. In fact, you are probably heads-on-spikes based. I go speak to these people and these nice Republican ladies show you their “RINO Hunter” tatts and talk about how Jeb! is a … well, they are very graphic. California is blue, deep blue, and we Golden State patriots are a besieged minority, yet you look at the GOP base and if they were any more to the right they would nominate Attila the Hun for Senate. Of course, Attila’s innovative policy prescriptions regarding driving his enemies before him and provoking the lamentations of the women and so forth are worth exploring. But then you go to some of these deep red states where you would think they were based and you have to wonder what the hell they are thinking. Look at South Dakota under Chamber of Commerce Cowgirl Kristi Noem. It took her years and the realization that running interference for the squishes by refusing to sign on to a bill protecting kids from gender freaks was destroying her chance of ever being president before she finally signed something. In places like North Dakota and Idaho, which should be on the cutting edge of medieval conservatism, they regularly elect Buick Republicans who think we should use our inside voices. What gives?

- What is clear is that, intentionally or not, China has shown America’s need to get serious about the threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its expansionist global aims.
- As the latest provocation by the CCP plays out, it gets more disturbing. The media, and even US President Joe Biden, describe the CCP as a “competitor” and downplay any possible conflict. When the CCP flies spy balloons across the continent, opens police stations in our cities, infiltrates our universities, poisons more than 100,000 Americans with hard drugs each year, and announces its plans to replace the United States, it is hard to argue we are in anything but a “Cold War” with the CCP.
- It is time for the U.S. government and our allies to definitively outline the clear challenge and danger the CCP poses to the West. The behavior demonstrated by the CCP spy balloon is not an aberration; it is part of a dangerous pattern. This includes the CCP’s longtime intellectual property theft; breaches of cybersecurity; its increasing global military presence; expanding and modernizing its military, and its purchases of farmland near US military sites. Given that this is the reality, the Biden Administration must act more forcefully in response to the CCP’s aggressive behavior or, through passivity, it will invite an even greater challenge from China.

The Biden administration’s $1.2 trillion American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) gives cities a blank check for hundreds of billions of dollars in federal grants. An astonishingly massive windfall for municipal budgets. Janet Yellen, U.S. Treasury Secretary, followed up by forming an Advisory Committee on Racial Equity (a.k.a. TACRE) to ensure cities channel those funds and future federal grants towards racial equity justice. The Committee’s mission is to “identify, monitor, and review aspects of the domestic economy that have directly and indirectly resulted in unfavorable conditions…for persons of color.”
The ulterior motive is to produce a permanent mechanism that is a data-driven approach forcing racial equity justice outcomes. Leftists refer to the concept as “democratizing data,” a contrary term that is an affirmative action contrivance.

Two wolves and a sheep decide what’s for dinner — that’s what the U.S. Department of Labor has done with American workers’ retirement accounts over the past few months. […] The ESG rule is one of those Biden blunders that needs review and disapproval now. The rule issued through the Department of Labor encourages retirement fund managers to insert political bias into their investment decisions, in favor of environmental, social and corporate governance ideals — a shifting goal — rather than profitability. The regulation is 180 degrees opposite of the intent of Congress when it created the rule that mandated that fund managers make decisions that protect the financial interests of clients. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) set parameters for most voluntarily established retirement and health plans in the private sector, with Congress aiming to protect individuals in these plans. ERISA allowed workers to trust their retirement fund managers, and trust is no small deal.

Of course not—it’s against the law—but the Biden Administration muddied the waters late last month with a “Fact Sheet” on Title VI, which is the federal law that prohibits race discrimination in public schools. Although broadly supportive of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts in the past, this is the first time the administration has mounted an explicit legal defense of racial-equity efforts. The fact sheet pays lip service to federal nondiscrimination law but encourages public schools to employ DEI training, “cultural competency training,” and all methods to address “racial disparities within a school.” This initiative represents the administration’s response to state-level efforts to ban DEI training, curriculum, and other policies, which unfortunately have become commonplace. But one very important fence is being dismantled, with little attention to the potential negative consequences: the fence of monogamy. Astonishingly, a third of American adults now say that their ideal relationship is non-monogamous. The monogamous nuclear family has been one of the central targets for abolition by progressives since at least the dawn of Marxism, and the new push for fads like so-called “ethical non-monogamy” and polyamory is just the latest front in a long-running war. In The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State (1884), Friedrich Engels used some sketchy early anthropology to argue that man’s natural state, before the emergence of class society, was a primitive matriarchy in which women were of at least an equal status to men and mating was “promiscuous.” In many respects, in a society where men cannot compel women to have sex with them, women hold the upper hand since they control society’s means of reproduction. The historical emergence of class society begins, according to Engels, with the idea that men can own women. From this basic idea, in time, emerged the various fundamental institutions of capitalist class society: private property, the nuclear family, and the state.

VDH: Refighting the Vietnam War
Triumph Retaken shows that America’s war in Vietnam could have been won earlier at far less cost, and in fact almost was, even belatedly by 1968. Military historian and Hillsdale College professor Mark Moyar has just published Triumph Regained: The Vietnam War, 1965-1968, which is the second in what will become a massive three-volume revision of the entire Vietnam War. It is a book that should be widely read, much discussed, and reviewed in depth regardless of one’s view of that sad chapter in American diplomacy and conflict in Vietnam. The first book, Triumph Forsaken: The Vietnam War, 1954-1965 appeared in 2006. It gained considerable attention for its heterodox analysis of the postwar origins of communist aggression against the South, beginning with the disastrous French colonial experience and its transference to the Americans. Moyar described the Byzantine intrigue through which the Kennedy Administration inserted American ground troops into Vietnam, and why and how his successor Lyndon B. Johnson rapidly escalated the American presence. Moyar’s controversial argument in volume one centered on the disastrous decisions of these two administrations that ensured Americans would be sent into an uninviting distant theater of operations in the dangerous neighborhood of both communist China and Russia. Worse, they would be asked to fight under self-imposed limitations of the nuclear age in which their leaders could not achieve victory or perhaps even define it.

Golding: Elon Musk lays off at least 50 more Twitter employees, including senior staff: report
The firings Saturday targeted multiple engineering teams, including those working on advertising technology, the main Twitter app and the digital infrastructure that keeps the social media giant’s systems running, The Information reported. The tech-focused website cited sources with direct knowledge of the matter, according to Reuters, which said the layoffs marked at least the eighth round of cuts under Musk’s leadership. Those canned apparently included senior product manager Martijn de Kuijper, whose Dutch startup, digital newsletter company, Revue, was bought by Twitter for an undisclosed amount in January 2021.

Seitz: Millions who rely on Medicaid may be booted from program
If you get health care coverage through Medicaid, you might be at risk of losing that coverage over the next year. Roughly 84 million people are covered by the government-sponsored program, which has grown by 20 million people since January 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. But as states begin checking everyone’s eligibility for Medicaid for the first time in three years, as many as 14 million people could lose access to that health care coverage. A look at why so many people may no longer qualify for the Medicaid program over the next year and what you need to know if you’re one of those people who relies on the program. At the beginning of the pandemic, the federal government prohibited states from kicking people off Medicaid, even if they were no longer eligible. Before the pandemic, people would regularly lose their Medicaid coverage if they started making too much money to qualify for the program, gained health care coverage through their employer or moved into a new state. That all stopped once COVID-19 started spreading across the country. Over the next year, states will be required to start checking the eligibility again of every person who is on Medicaid. People will have to fill out forms to verify their personal information, including address, income and household size.

What to know about SNAP benefits returning to pre-pandemic amounts
The temporary boost to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits put into place during the COVID-19 pandemic will end this week. The big picture: The end of the emergency allotments aimed at combating food insecurity will impact more than 41 million Americans who received the increased benefit last year alone. What they are: SNAP is a monthly benefit for eligible low-income people to purchase food. The emergency allotments added almost three years ago allowed SNAP households to get an additional $95 or more (depending on household size and income) in monthly benefits.
Why they’re expiring this week: The boost to SNAP benefits was a temporary strategy authorized by Congress to help low-income individuals and families deal with pandemic hardships.
