In 220 AD, the Later Eastern Han Dynasty extended sections of the Great Wall of China along the Mongolian border. Marauding bands and lawless mobs raided Britain’s unprotected Roman settlements and carried away thousands to sell into slavery in Ireland. Ireland was ruled by the bloodthirsty, superstitious pagan Druids.

United States electricity prices are rising rapidly, up 18.1 percent over the last two years. Renewable energy advocates claim that wind and solar installations produce cheaper electricity than traditional power plants, but power prices are rising as more wind and solar is added to the grid. In fact, electricity prices are soaring in leading wind energy states. Over a 12-year period from 2008 to 2020, US average electricity prices rose only eight percent, according to the US Energy Information Administration. This was much lower than the inflation rate of 20 percent over the same period. But power prices rose five percent from 2020 to 2021 and an additional 12.5 percent last year. Most of this rise was due to rising US inflation, but the share of electricity generated from wind also rose from 8.4 percent in 2020 to 10.2 percent in 2022.

The most useful account came from a tweet by someone using the handle dana 916 (hat tip: Mark Wauck). Keane: Court rules against NY worker fired for refusing LGBTQ training

A federal appellate court rejected the case of an upstate man who was fired from his job at a school district in 2018 after refusing to attend mandatory workplace LGBTQ training. Raymond Zdunski argued that the LGBTQ training held by his employer, the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), was “aimed at changing his religious beliefs about gender and sexuality” and was against his religion as a devout Christian, the Buffalo News reported. Lindquist: Medical School Opens Scholarship to White Students After Federal Investigation

MUSC was investigated by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) after they were reported for excluding men and white people from some diversity scholarships that required applicants to be from a demographic that is considered “under-represented in medicine.” The medical school informed OCR in February that they would open up their scholarships to students “regardless of race.” A February 28th letter from OCR states that: “the University informed OCR that the program is now called the Achieving Health Equity by Advancing Diversity (AHEAD) Visiting Student Program and that eligibility for the program is open to students regardless of race,” before also going on to say “OCR verified that the University’s website now calls the program AHEAD, and that it no longer mentions race, color, or national origin.”

Cotton wasn’t just some crank experimenting on his patients; he was well-respected and seen as a leader in his field. He eventually suspected himself of going mad and had his own teeth removed. […] But at the same time that doctors were jabbing ice picks into people’s brains, another ethically dubious medical adventure was getting underway. The patients were mostly adult males, their numbers were tiny, and they were suffering from a poorly understood disorder: gender dysphoria. Campus Reform reported Wednesday that it isn’t just a young people’s problem: “a recent study suggests that, for the first time in nearly 100 years, Americans’ average intelligence quotient (IQ) is declining.” However, the study, which was published in the May-June 2023 issue of Intelligence, finds that young people are experiencing the most significant decline in intellectual abilities: “the greatest differences in annual scores were observed for 18- to 22-year-olds.” What a surprise. The study notes a phenomenon that philosopher and intelligence researcher James Flynn, who died in 2020, first noted: “starting in 1932, average IQ scores increased roughly three to five points per decade. In other words, ‘younger generations are expected to have higher IQ scores than the previous cohort.’” However, after a generation and more of Leftist dominance of the education industry, there is now “a reverse Flynn effect.” The study shows that between 2006 and 2018, there were general declines in IQ scores. Campus Reform adds that “overall declines held true across age groups after controlling for educational attainment and gender, but the study shows that the loss in cognitive abilities is steeper for younger participants.” Why might this be happening?

Results: Across all formulations, vitamin D exposure was associated with significantly longer dementia-free survival and lower dementia incidence rate than no exposure (hazard ratio = 0.60, 95% confidence interval: 0.55–0.65). The effect of vitamin D on incidence rate differed significantly across the strata of sex, cognitive status, and APOE ε4 status. Discussion: Vitamin D may be a potential agent for dementia prevention.

Reparations had San Francisco residents lining up at a Tuesday night city board meeting to “share their full-throated support” for wide-ranging benefits paid out to the descendants of slaves, reported the Daily Mail. “The proposals put forward in San Francisco last night are among some of the most generous to be heard to date,” and that leaves me with two questions. […] Qualifying black residents would receive an annual stipend of $97,000 for the next 250 years, have their personal debt wiped out, the “right” to buy a local home for one dollar, and enjoy a one-time lump-sum payment of [activate Dr. Evil voice] FIVE MILLION DOLLARS. So my first question is: how did the city council arrive at such a generous reparations package? Because the numbers don’t add up. San Francisco’s median personal income was about $77,000 in 2021. The city council would give black residents a $20,000 bonus on top of that for doing nothing. And, as various reports have shown, you can get by in the city on the homeless stipend of $620 a month (plus $200 in food stamps), provided you’re willing to live outdoors and supplement your income with fentanyl sales. I wasn’t able to find a figure for San Francisco’s average household wealth, but I’m assuming it’s somewhere south of that $5 million lump-sum payment, and, at least in most cases, required years to accumulate. Second question: How will the city pay these reparations?

So how can that be? The issue is primarily a cultural tug-of-war taking place in public school libraries. The International Atomic Energy Agency said in a confidential report this week that 2.5 tons of natural uranium have gone missing from a site in Libya that is not controlled by the government. Reuters reported that the U.N. nuclear watchdog informed member states of the news this week, according to documents viewed by the publication. A statement from IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said that the inspection was supposed to happen last year, but “had to be postponed because of the security situation in the region.”

Equality and tolerance, a hospital executive said, trump the Christian faith. Pullicino has sued.

Pullicino isn’t alone. Last year, a street preacher was convicted of “threatening behavior” for answering a “trans woman’s” question, although a court recently overturned the ridiculous decision.
