Suddenly there’s a lot of talk and media coverage around the concept of so-called 15-minute cities. The idea is that everything you need to live well in an urban setting – healthcare, education, food, employment, cultural life – should be easily reachable within a 15-minute walk or bike ride from any point in a town or city, thereby reducing car dependency. At face value, the idea seems desirable and has much to commend it. But I can’t help smell a rat, especially following Covid lockdowns and the increasingly “nudgy” and authoritarian-lite sheen to public policies these days. I suspect the great Catholic writer Hilaire Belloc would have agreed, given what he had to say about the intractable struggle between Catholicism and socialism. “The Catholic Church, acutely conscious as she is of the abominations of the modern industrial and capitalistic system…refuses to cure it at the expense of denying a fundamental principle of morality, the principle of private ownership, which applies quite as much to the means of production as to any other class of material objects,” Belloc wrote in his 1908 essay The Church and Socialism. Currently the “material object” most in the crosshairs that bureaucrats and activists are obsessing over – in terms of reducing your use of it or simply taking it away altogether- is your car.

The promise of cities is that they have a lot more stuff to do, things to buy and sell, places to work, and people to meet than towns and villages. It’s why large metros manage to be richer, more attractive places than smaller, isolated communities, despite all the traffic, noise, crime, pollution, and general urban dysfunction that inevitably comes with them. It’s strange then that all across the world, city planners and the politicians under their sway keep trying to replace the interconnected, agglomerated city with sealed-off, self-contained urban villages no one will have to leave. .[…] A March 2022 article published by the World Economic Forum traces the “surprising stickiness” of the 15-minute city all the way back to 19th-century Scotsman Patrick Geddes’ vision for “Eutopia.” Through proper planning, Geddes hoped that Eutopian towns and cities could transition society away from “money wages” and the messy individual plans they encouraged and toward a more communal, energy-conserving built environment of “folk, work, and place.” […] . . . 15-minute city proponents’ plan of clustering jobs and residents together is doomed to fail at the stated goal of reducing travel. Living next to an office complex doesn’t guarantee that there’s a job for you there. You also might not want to rent an apartment next to your work or move every time you change jobs. This is one of those stories that you’re certain is from the Babylon Bee, and that is stunning in its implications when it turns out to be the truth. In this case, the truth is that, in accordance with UN and WEF climate recommendations, the city of Oxford (home to the famed university) approved plans mandating that citizens may not drive more than 15 minutes distance from their homes without permission. It’s called the “15 Minute City” and is intended to reduce auto emissions. Mostly, though, it will reduce liberty, which is what climate change madness has always been about.

Oh my God — we’re doomed. The UN’s Panel on Climate Change came out with a frightening report earlier this month that we are sitting on a global time bomb, and according to CNN, “time is running out,” without immediate drastic action. The UN report states that if global temperatures reach 1.5 C above the pre-industrial temperature norm of 1850-1900, the resulting melting of the polar ice caps, rising oceans, and unprecedented ecological disaster will follow. I read this a few days back on a dark and stormy night while working on my own tome about disaster, the next book in the One Second After series. One Second After examines what would happen if we were ever hit by an enemy using an Electro-Magnetic Pulse generated from detonating a nuclear weapon in space. But ecological disaster, which is all but inevitable according to the highly respected UN report, was far more frightening. Closing off working on my book, I brewed yet another cup of coffee, sat back and pulled out a well-respected study on this existential threat to all mankind. I started to thumb through the pages of a work that took a team of international experts years to research and has sold well over 12 million copies since publication.
I turned to the chapter on fossil fuels. […] To make it worse, a book published a few years earlier, The Population Bomb, a NYT best-seller by Paul Ehrlich, really sealed our doom. According to Ehrlich, the planet was already past its “carrying capacity” which in 1970 was 3.5 billion. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, multiple government officials seized the opportunity to grab more power. Perhaps chief among them were the Tucson city council and Mayor Regina Romero, who exploited the moment by declaring a “climate emergency.” Now, the city of Tucson has finalized its plan to solve this “climate emergency”—to the tune of an estimated $326 million. But it’s not just the cost that should concern you. Tucson’s Climate Action Plan, . . .[…[ But maybe they think they can force this to happen with another one of their strategies: putting people on road diets (which, by the way, was recently approved in a Scottsdale City Council meeting). In case you’re not familiar with this approach, road diets reduce the number of travel lanes and the width of the road to make room for other modes of transportation like bike lanes. They have been used in failed leftist cities like Portland, which should tell you all you need to know. And as you probably guessed by now, they will only increase traffic congestion.

The Biden administration is petitioning federal courts to deny users of marijuana the ability to exercise their natural right to keep and bear arms — and the arguments they are making are just astounding. Here’s a bit of background, as published by Reason magazine online: [The Biden administration is filing briefs in defense] of the federal law that makes it a felony for cannabis consumers to possess firearms. That law, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) argues in an appeal brief filed last week, is “consistent with this Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation”—the constitutional test established by the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen. To make its case, the government cites laws passed in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries that prohibited people from carrying or firing guns while intoxicated, which it implausibly argues are analogous to the gun ban for marijuana users that Congress imposed in 1968. Did you catch that? Joe Biden’s Justice Department insists that old laws prohibiting drunk people from firing guns in public are persuasively and philosophically analogous to the White House’s aim to disarm anyone who uses — even under medical supervision — marijuana.

Feldman: The Public Health Establishment That Flew Too Near to the Sun
This week Senator Rand Paul and Congressman Chip Roy introduced long-overdue legislation to rein in and reform an out-of-control and counterproductive public health establishment. The bill, entitled the NIH Reform Act would replace the Anthony Fauci-led National Institute of Allergic Diseases (NIAD) with three separate agencies: One to deal with allergic diseases, a second with infectious diseases, and a third to deal with immunologic diseases. Directors of each of these institutes would be subject to Senate confirmation and would serve no more than two five-year terms. No longer would any one person like Fauci be given such overreaching authority (“dictator-in-chief”) for decades. Senator Paul explains, “This will create accountability and oversight into a taxpayer-funded position that has largely abused its power and has been responsible for many failures and misinformation during the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Congressman Roy expanded on the need for this legislation.

Unruh: Money returned to trucking company owner – finally!
The owner of a trucking company has gotten back from the government the nearly $40,000 federal agents took from him years ago at an airport. The Institute for Justice explains the money, actually $39,500, has been returned to small business owner Jerry Johnson. The cash was confiscated when he was at the Phoenix, Arizona, airport in 2020. There was no reason for the confiscation, except that he was carrying money, the report said. […] “That the government could take my money, never charge me with a crime but hold onto my savings for so long is outrageous. It created a tremendous financial burden for me and my family, and there were a lot of business opportunities I’ve missed out on because that money was just sitting in a government account.” The IJ reported the government returned the money “with less than 0.8% in accrued interest.” But it refuses to pay attorneys’ fees and interest specified by the law.

Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett confronted Secretary of State Tony Blinken about taxpayer money going toward pensions in Ukraine during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Thursday. In response, Blinken said there are processes in place to make sure the funds are going toward approved categories. He also said that most of the U.S. funding moves through a World Bank program. […] “I appreciate all that, but when we can’t fund Medicare and then we’re funding Ukrainian pensions, I really think our priorities are out of whack,” Burchett said. Burchett’s office told Just the News that the $4 billion figure comes from a USAID report that they have reviewed.

The bill faces a tough road ahead to become law. Fried: Was Massive Vote Fraud Confirmed with a Fishtail?
Sometimes fraud is so far beyond the pale, so egregious, that it is difficult to accept that it happened. But evidence can be too blatant to explain away, especially when two totally different sources of information confirm the existence of the very same fraudulent activity. Such a convergence of evidence occurred in the 2020 election. An explosive allegation was made: In Pima County, thirty-five thousand (35,000) votes had been added to each Democratic candidate in the election, including Joe Biden. The allegation was made anonymously by someone claiming that he or she met with Democrat Pima County election officials on September 10, 2020, where a plan to rig the vote was hatched. The tipster’s written words were described and posted at a meeting of the Arizona Senate on November 30, 2020. Retired Army Col. Phil Waldron told the Senate members, . . . […] The unnatural pattern in this graph is almost impossible to explain unless there was fraud. There may be a temptation to explain Trump’s apparent loss by saying he was not as popular as other Republicans. However, that was probably not the case. As you can see in the image, Trump had a commanding lead over other Republicans in precincts with average or lower return rates. (And remember: The “average” for Pima — shown with the vertical line — was about 19 percent higher than other Arizona counties.) However, when we move to the right side of the graph, into the super-high (and very unrealistic) return rates of 92 percent to almost 100 percent, Trump starts losing relative to other Republicans, and Biden gains relative to other Democrats. What does it mean? It appears extremely likely that those extra 35,000 votes were dumped into certain Pima county precincts, and/or votes were switched between the two presidential candidates.

Walter Wendler, the campus president of West Texas A&M University, criticized drag shows as an event that demeans and diminishes women while canceling an event on campus. Wendler sent out an email to the school on Monday announcing that the college would not be hosting a planned drag show charity performance titled “A Fool’s Drag Race” on Mar. 31. The performance was originally meant to raise money for the transgender crisis management non-profit organization The Trevor Project. While Wendler supported donating money to the organization itself, he denounced drag shows as demeaning to women under the subject headline “A Harmless Drag show? No Such Thing.” “As a university president, I would not support ‘blackface’ performances on our campus, even if told the performance is a form of free speech or intended as humor. It is wrong. I do not support any show, performance or artistic expression which denigrates others—in this case, women—for any reason,” he wrote. Wendler continued, “Forward-thinking women and men have worked together for nearly two centuries to eliminate sexism. Women have fought valiantly, seeking equality in the voting booth, marketplace and court of public opinion. No one should claim a right to contribute to women’s suffering via a slapstick sideshow that erodes the worth of women.”

A California Democrat has proposed a bill that would allow a mental health professional to place a child as young as 12 in a residential shelter facility without parental knowledge or consent and without there being any prior allegations of incest or child abuse. […] The bill is strongly opposed by Our Duty, an international group of parents of children who are, or were, gender-questioning, who believe the law would amount to “state-sanctioned kidnapping.” According to Erin Friday, co-lead of Our Duty, the bill will give counselors unfettered control over children age 12 and above. In a letter to the state assembly, Friday gives the example of a hypothetical 6th grader who informs her school counselor that she is a “trans boy.” Friday argues that if AB 665 were to be enacted, that child may not come home from school that day but could instead be sent to an “LGBTQ housing facility.”

Judicial Watch: College Gets Millions from U.S. to Develop Tool for Journalists to Combat Misinformation
The public university that recently got more than half a million dollars from the U.S. government to combat science misinformation in black communities is also receiving a chunk of change from American taxpayers to develop a “precision tool providing journalists with guidance against misinformation.” The fact-checking engine is called Course Correct and the academics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who are creating it assert it will help journalists identify trending misinformation on social media, strategically correct false claims and test the effectiveness of corrections in real time. “Challenges of misinformation are not restricted to elections and COVID or to a particular community,” according to one of the professors working on the project. “Countering misinformation will require vigilance and adaptation.” And apparently a lot of money from the government. Public funding will flow through the National Science Foundation (NSF), the federal agency established by Congress in 1950 to promote the progress of science, advance national health and secure national defense.

he most recent shout-down debacle at Stanford’s law school, one of many such recent sordid episodes, prompts the question: “Who owns our universities?” The law students who are in residence for three years apparently assume they embody the university. And so, they believe they represent and speak for a score of diverse Stanford interests when they shout down federal Judge Kyle Duncan, as if he were an intruder into their own woke private domain. After all, Stanford, like most of the Ivy League universities, is a private institution. Are then its board of trustees, its faculty, its students, and its administration de facto overseers and owners? Not really. In the case of public institutions of higher learning, there is no controversy: The people own the university and, through their elected representatives, pay for and approve its entire budget. Again, through their selected regents and overseers, the taxpayers adjudicate the laws of these universities. But private universities, while different, are not really so different.

Every Tuesday Jackson holds an event that he has named “Tie Tuesday.” It provides an opportunity for students to get dressed up and to learn how to tie a neck tie or bow tie. “I’ve been at Dixon for five years, and each one of my students has had the opportunity to learn how to tie ties but also show their own professionalism.” Learning to tie a necktie is a fond memory for Jackson. His grandfather taught him how to tie one when he was seven years old. “Tie Tuesday is my favorite day of the week. Consisting of transport planes and more than 1,300 towed gliders, the line of aircraft stretched back to the horizon for hundreds of miles. Flying at an altitude of just a thousand feet, the swarm generated a buzz that seemed to announce the fleet’s arrival from every direction. Fighter escorts, biding their time and scanning for enemy aircraft, flew in lazy patterns above the staggered formations of lumbering transports. Anderson: State Legislation Could Strip Catholic Churches’ Right To Protect Members ‘Sealed Confessions’
Two bills proposed by state elected officials would remove the Catholic Church’s right to the “seal of confession” protecting priests’ right to refuse to provide private information divulged during confessionals, and Catholic advocates warn it could be a slippery slope when it comes to protections for religious freedom. Delaware HB 74 and Vermont Sen. Bill 16 were introduced earlier this year by Democratic Rep. Eric Morrison and Democratic Sen. Richard Sears, respectively, to prevent child abuse, according to the bills’ texts. The legislation would amend state law to prohibit any clergy member from asserting the right to a privileged conversation during confessions if information about child abuse or neglect is revealed, but advocates warn it will not help prevent abuse and only deprive churches of their First Amendment rights. […] Brian Burch, the president of CatholicVote, a Catholic advocacy nonprofit, told the DCNF that he was concerned about an attempt by a state government to “invade” the practices of Catholics. “The goal is to harm the Catholic Church, to diminish its role in society and to undermine its efforts to serve the needs of its members in favor of a more extreme secular remake of culture,” Burch said.

Twitter‘s source code has been posted online in an embarrassing and potentially damaging security breach, which forced the social media company to immediately take legal action. The Elon Musk-owned firm on Friday filed a lawsuit seeking a subpoena to force GitHub to reveal who posted parts of the code online.
GitHub, a site for computer programmers to share ideas and collaborate on projects, has taken the code segments down. Source code is the ‘DNA’ of a website: the programming behind it, which shows how it operates. It is considered intellectual property. It was posted by someone using the name ‘FreeSpeechEnthusiast’ – a seeming reference to Musk himself, who declared that he was a ‘free speech absolutist’. Analysts believe that the code could have been posted online by a disgruntled former employee.

Sundance: Mid-Tier Donor Class Very Worried About Ron DeSantis 2024 Management Agenda
Before getting to the latest developments regarding the worries of the mid-tier donor class within the republican apparatus, I want to provide some context for the overall Ron DeSantis (RdS) management agenda. I can trace the origin of the RdS 2024 scheme to an originating timeframe in late fall 2021. It may go back further than that, but it is at least in place by the late fall of 2021. That means that everything within the professional republican apparatus, those who manipulate the political events from the controlling wing of the republican side of the UniParty, had RdS ’24 as the agenda throughout the 2022 midterm calendar. With that context, the events around the 2022 midterms and the surprising lack of professional republican gains in the midterm election, start to take on an entirely new Machiavellian light. Not necessarily the RNC corporation; rather, the subsidiary weaponized groups including the Republican Governors Association and the Senate reelection schemes spearheaded by Mitch McConnell et al. In hindsight, those were all done with the context of laying the groundwork for ’22 MAGA defeat and ’24 RdS rise as an outcome.

But the Netherlands? What’s the secret? One word: innovation. Which shouldn’t come as a surprise. Much of its current farmland wouldn’t exist if not for the reclamation of land from the sea – a practice that is now some seven hundred years old and that, thanks to extraordinary technological innovations during the previous century, has more than doubled the country’s area. Last year, in an article for Dutch Review, Jesse Rintoul summed up some of the more impressive recent examples of innovations in Dutch farming. The University of Wageningen, thanks to “an alternative soil composite made of coco peat and rock wool,” managed to grow bananas in the Netherlands’ not-exactly-banana-republic climate. A company called Nijsen/Granico produces “about 90,000 tons of animal feed a year entirely from human food waste.” And in Rotterdam, there’s a “floating farm” that feeds cows “with leftovers from local restaurants.” The Dutch, notes Rintoul, have sought to “produce twice as much food using half as many resources.” You’d think the Dutch would be immensely proud of these accomplishments – proud to be able not only to feed themselves but to sell their agricultural products all over the world. Alas, during the last couple of decades, as the Netherlands’ agricultural sector has grown, so has the number of Dutch legislators who either are hard-core environmentalists or are pathetically eager to obey the globalists at the UN, EU, and World Economic Forum, who are using climate- scare rhetoric to solidify their power.

I have rarely heard it mentioned in the mainstream media, but, according to reports, during the 1990s in communist China, thirty thousand members of Falun Gong were rounded up and executed. The founder of Falun Gong, Li Hongzhi, fled China and now lives in the U.S., while in China members of the order went underground. According to Freedom House, “Falun Gong practitioners across China have since [July 1999] been subjected to widespread surveillance, arbitrary detention, horrific torture, and extrajudicial killing — abuses which continue today.” Nonetheless, there are still some 100 million practitioners worldwide, and the movement continues to grow. Information concerning the repression of Falun Gong is a Chinese state secret, with severe penalties for anyone attempting to obtain data. As the Falun Data Infocenter puts it: “The CCP has also used political and financial influence around the world to either keep journalists silent, or drive false narratives about Falun Gong.” With total control inside China and compliance by foreign journalists, the Chinese Communist Party has driven a false narrative that minimizes the number of Falun Gong practitioners and hides data on the number of those abducted, tortured, killed, and killed for their organs, thus totally obscuring the record. At the same time, Chinese and foreign media continue to suggest that the victim is the abuser: the false idea that Falun Gong is a cult with dangerous potential.

Then organise a blind date for the resulting ideal match. Put simply, the Communist Party of China has got a math problem.

Why it matters: The sacking is likely to further enrage anti-government protesters and escalate the instability the country has faced since Netanyahu’s right-wing government unveiled the judicial overhaul plan earlier this year. No Israeli defense minister has ever been fired three months after a government was formed or after warning that Israel was facing a grave national security threat. Driving the news: Gallant in a televised speech on Saturday called for the immediate suspension of Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul legislation, saying it had “created an internal rift that poses a clear and immediate threat for Israel’s national security.”

The National: GCC foreign ministers condemn Israeli minister in letter to Blinken
Foreign ministers from the Gulf Co-operation Council, in a letter to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, have condemned comments by Israeli Finance Minister Bezlalel Smotrich. The letter, released on Sunday, follows provocative statements by Mr Smotrich, who has been widely condemned for claiming there is no such thing as Palestinian people and saying a Palestinian town should be “wiped out.” In the letter, the foreign ministers call on Mr Blinken to “respond to all measures and statements that target the Palestinian people.” It condemns Mr Smotrich for the statements and urges the American administration “to play its role in reaching a just, comprehensive and lasting solution to the conflict based on the principles of international law.” […] The GCC also condemned escalating Israeli settlements and violence, “including the crimes committed recently in the city and camp of Jenin.”
Jenin and Nablus have seen almost constant Israeli army raids for the past year. The army claims militant groups based in the cities are responsible for attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians.
