Tuesday’s first-ever Senate appearance of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sparked a frenzy on Capitol Hill. But the more important action on artificial intelligence may actually have been just up the stairs in the same Senate office building, at a lower-profile hearing on the federal government’s own use of AI.

With Congress largely stalled on any serious plans to regulate AI across the tech industry, legislation applied specifically to federal agencies may be Washington’s best chance to put its imprint on the fast-moving technology. The tech lobby remains largely torn on how (or whether) to regulate AI — and lawmakers, fearful of setting rules that could delay new products or kneecap U.S. tech companies on the global stage, are hesitant to pass industry-wide bills. But it’s often far easier for Congress to pass laws that rein in federal agencies. Even if those rules don’t technically apply to the private sector, they set norms and standards that often trickle out into the broader economy.

Modern academia advocates education purely for labor, ignoring purposes beyond wage-earning. Few argue that poverty is desirable. Yet everyone knows purchasing power alone does not fully enrich life. Flourishing comes through lives well lived — through fruitful, fulfilling activities and everyday moments enhanced by increased understanding and creativity. Classical education pursues higher aims, opposing the modern view. When greater goals are pursued, subordinate goals are also attained. An obvious example is literacy.

Hazard: Trucking industry faces showdown with Democrats over push to eliminate diesel rigs, go electric

QAnon played the same role as Fauci and when both were no longer needed they exited the stage. Durham’s 306-page report opened with an executive summary capsulizing the results of the special counsel’s four-year investigation into the intelligence activities and investigations arising out of the 2016 presidential campaigns. While calling the findings “sobering,” and previewing the widespread misconduct on which the body of the report elaborated, Durham’s introductory comments emphasized he “does not recommend any wholesale changes in the guidelines and policies.” It is here that Durham made his damning indictment of the DOJ and the FBI when he stressed that “the answer is not the creation of new rules but a renewed fidelity to the old.” Ultimately, he continued, justice “comes down to the integrity of the people who take an oath to follow the guidelines.” And “the promulgation of additional rules and regulations to be learned in yet more training sessions would likely prove to be a fruitless exercise if the FBI’s guiding principles of ‘Fidelity, Bravery and Integrity’ are not engrained in the hearts and minds of those sworn to meet the FBI’ s mission of ‘Protect[ing] the American People and Uphold[ing] the Constitution of the United States.’”

Ross: Schiff Aide Threatened Researchers Who Refused to Investigate False Trump–Russia Links

Staffers for Democratic congressman Adam Schiff (Calif.) and Senator Jack Reed (R.I.) threatened two university researchers to force them to help with an investigation into former president Donald Trump’s ties to Russia, the researchers told Special Counsel John Durham. The researchers, from Georgia Tech University, told Durham that they were invited to Washington, D.C., in November 2018 to provide what they thought was a briefing about the school’s federal research contracts. Instead, they were lured into a meeting with staff members working for Schiff at the House Intelligence Committee and for Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee. The researchers said the Democratic staffers asked them to analyze a news article about alleged links between Trump’s company and Russia’s Alfa Bank. […] The revelation marks yet another black eye for Schiff in his failed quest to establish ties between Trump and Russia. The California Democrat, who is running for Senate, infamously claimed in 2017 that he had seen “more than circumstantial evidence” of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. He also read portions of the discredited Steele dossier at a congressional hearing on March 20, 2017. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) stripped Schiff of his House Intelligence position in January, citing the Democrat’s promotion of Trump conspiracy theories.

A few days ago we told you how the Biden administration was sued by Governor DeSantis and the state of Florida to prevent DHS from releasing illegals without court notices. Florida won that case, and it meant DHS would have to house these illegals somewhere until they could issue these notices.

A New York Supreme Court judge granted a temporary restraining order against New York City, stopping them from sending more migrants to Orange County, said County Executive Steve Neuhaus. Biden spoke in many campaign speeches of being in a ‘battle for the soul of the nation.’ […] Fast forward three years.
