A troubling trend of social isolation is afflicting young adults globally. In Japan, social withdrawal among young men is now so severe that the Japanese have a very specific term for it: hikikomori. Hiki means “to withdraw,” and komori means “to remain inside.” At least 1.5 million Japanese people, many of whom are young men in their twenties and thirties, have completely withdrawn from society. They don’t date; they don’t mate; they don’t work; and they don’t socialize. In short, they refrain from doing anything that requires them to leave their hyper-isolated chambers. Many of these young males are hurting—financially, spiritually, and psychologically. […] In the U.S., as in Japan, young men are retreating en masse. We are witnessing the rise of the American hikikomori. This sociocultural phenomenon involves a refusal to cooperate or engage with other members of society. Something needs to be done, and fast, because the negative outcomes are piling up. American males are far more likely to commit suicide than American females by a factor of nearly four. “Deaths of despair,” mostly meaning suicide or drug overdose, have risen rapidly among young and middle-aged men, actually causing a decline in life expectancy. Rather staggeringly, 60% of American men in their twenties are single, and only 50% of single men are seeking a romantic relationship.

The Catholic Church risks killing its own moral credibility. Recent remarks from the president of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life indicate that the Catholic Church continues to pivot away from defending the most vulnerable in their earliest and latest stages of existence. Cardinal Vincenzo Paglia told an Italian journalism conference April 21 that for the sake of preserving the common societal good, the church would accept laws supporting assisted suicide. “It cannot be excluded that in our society, a legal mediation is practicable that allows assisted suicide,” said Paglia, alluding to a judgement in 2019 from Italy’s Constitutional Court outlining limited conditions for assisted suicide. Patients must be “kept alive by life-sustaining treatments and suffering from an irreversible pathology, a source of physical or psychological suffering that he considers intolerable, but fully capable of making free and informed decisions,” it states. The cardinal then referenced a bill the Italian Parliament is considering to expand those conditions. […] So why does Paglia still have his position? Francis is applying the tactics of Fabian socialists to ignite the doctrinal change he desires. Francis’ public support for historic teaching mollifies inattentive Catholics. But his unwillingness to discipline favored subordinates who state diametrically opposed positions reveals his true intentions. Indeed, those subordinates are the tools Francis uses to expedite his desired changes.

Berrien: One Of The World’s Most Dangerous Volcanoes Threatening To Erupt

The alert level of the Popocatepetl volcano, which towers roughly 18,000 feet over sea level and looms 34 miles southeast of Mexico City, threatening 25 million people within range of an eruption, was raised to yellow phase three on Sunday, one step below a red alert. A yellow phase three alert level is triggered when the volcano shows “significant explosions of increasing intensity that shoot fragments (of rock) over considerable distances.” On Saturday the airports in Mexico City and Puebla temporarily halted flights because of ash spewed from the volcano.

Paphatis: Greece’s ruling party wins big but calls for new election after falling short of majority

Greece will go to the polls again as early as June 25, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis confirming Monday that he will not try to build a coalition government after dominating an election over the weekend but failing to secure an outright majority in Parliament. Mitsotakis’ center-right New Democracy party trounced the opposition by the most decisive margin in half a century, slighty increasing its share of parliamentary seats and winning double the votes of the left-wing Syriza party and nearly four times those of third-place Socialist Pasok. But a one-off electoral law in place Sunday denied him a governing majority. Mitsotakis will now pin his hopes on a second election — expected no later than July 2 — where the electoral system will revert to its old setup, which gives the leading party a bonus of up to 50 of Parliament’s 300 seats. Had that system been in place Sunday, New Democracy would have secured more than 170 seats.
