Streiff: Supreme Court to Take up First Fourteenth Amendment Challenge to Trump’s Candidacy

he US Supreme Court is poised to take up the issue of whether the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution bars former president Trump from running for president in 2024. The case originates with alleged GOP write-in candidate John Anthony Castro of Texas. So far, he’s filed lawsuits challenging Trump’s eligibility for office in eight states: Wyoming, Utah, Oklahoma, North Carolina, West Virginia, Montana, Kansas, and Idaho. A lawsuit by Castro in Florida has already been dismissed. Castro’s lawsuit is a long shot. The bar he has to cross is to prove he is personally injured by Trump’s candidacy. He hopes to clear that hurdle by claiming that his candidacy is damaged by Trump’s presence “based on a political competitive injury in the form a diminution of votes.” Newsweek says we should have the Supreme Court’s decision in about a month. [Note: Castro is a registered Republican and an attorney.]

An artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot now offers “a divine connection in your pocket” by allowing users to “text with Jesus.” While some may look at this app as a means to find comfort or spiritual growth, others will likely see it as an abomination signaling the apocalypse. I find myself asking a more basic question. What sort of church makes an app like this possible? […] The concern I have with “Text with Jesus” is the potential for it to make Jesus too familiar. At this point, AI Jesus bears no resemblance to the Jesus of the Bible. “Text with Jesus,” for instance, would not even offer an unqualified “yes” when I asked whether Jesus was really God. While the stark difference between the biblical portrayal of Jesus and AI Jesus may seem comforting, we shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss AI Jesus simply because it doesn’t live up to our theological standards just yet. Instead, we should be concerned about the basic dynamic the app encourages. Whether or not the app is “intended” to replace other religious practices, it is difficult to believe that “Text with Jesus” won’t diminish the perceived importance of practices like Bible study and prayer. It isn’t as if the internet, streaming services, or social media “intended” to fundamentally change the way we interact with one another. As AI develops, it seems reasonable (and likely) that it will change the way we interact with each other and the world. “Text with Jesus” is one of various other attempts to change the way we interact with God.

Pope: Scientist Admits Omitting ‘Full Truth’ From Climate Study To Get It Published

Patrick T. Brown, a climate scientist, wrote Tuesday in The Free Press that he deliberately omitted the “full truth” from a paper he recently authored in order to increase its chances of publication in a prestigious journal. Brown explained his decision-making in the piece, asserting that he overlooked truths in his work in order to make it more appealing to the editorial biases of leading journals like Nature and Science. Brown and seven other authors wrote a paper which examined the relationship between climate change and wildfire risks in California, and Nature published the paper in August 2023. Brown stated that scientists hoping to advance their careers by getting published in leading journals are inclined to tailor their findings to align with the biases of editors and reviewers, a dynamic which “distorts a great deal of climate science research, misinforms the public and most importantly, makes practical solutions more difficult to achieve.”

Both Powell and Chesebro have demanded speedy trials; however, the case is essentially a Rico conspiracy case and none of the accused defendants can split away from the group of 19 as a whole. If a single state defendant successfully argues in another court that their case should be transferred to a different jurisdiction (perhaps federal), or if a single state defendant is successful splitting away from the group of 19, then the entire conspiracy case collapses. This is the ridiculousness of the construct. […] According to the Lawfare logic as explained today in court, any of the 73 million Trump voters are therefore guilty of conspiring to keep President Donald Trump in office, and subject to future arrest and detention. Yes, this is Lawfare madness.

On Tuesday, a federal judge sentenced former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio to 22 years in prison for his part in organizing the riot on January 6, 2021, in the Capitol building. Tarrio was nowhere near Washington that day. He was in Baltimore after being arrested on separate charges. However, Tarrio tweeted out support for the riot and claimed credit for it after the fact. The common sentence for first degree murder is 20 years. Why did Tarrio get 22 years when he wasn’t even at the physical location of the riot? Other Proud Boys and Oath Keepers also received long sentences. Most January 6 defendants received far lighter sentences of a few months to a few years. That’s because they accepted a lighter sentence in exchange for their guilty plea. The Proud Boys chose to go to trial.

Keith and Kevin Hodge, known as the Hodgetwins or Conservative Twins, broke the news, revealing that their friend Hughes was arrested in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Wednesday, August 30. The duo pointed out the contrast between the treatment of Hughes and the members of groups like BLM and Antifa, questioning the motivations behind such disparate actions. According to the Hodgetwins, Nathan Hughes was raided by the FBI and arrested at gunpoint over his involvement in the January 6th Capitol event that occurred more than two and a half years ago. The company claims that it only provides access codes to authorities after receiving proper legal documentation and has denied requests in the past that lacked a valid warrant.

There is an important sentence in the above tweet/post from the Hodge Twins, and that is this: “The feds called the manufacturer of his Liberty Gun Safe and got the passcode to get into it too.” It comes as a surprise to many of us (although it shouldn’t) that an electronic keypad has a secret factory default passcode that allows entry into the safe besides the customer-configured passcode. We don’t know if this default passcode is unique to each safe, or if it’s a model default passcode (like a silly default “admin/admin” username/password combination you find in most wireless routers) that will get you entry into any Liberty Safe of the same model. (Looking at the customer FAQ’s on the Liberty Safe website, it looks like the default passcode may be unique to each safe.) […] The wisdom of having a factory default passcode to help customers unlock the safe is itself questionable, especially if it’s prone to compromise either through hacking a master database of all factory default passcodes, or through an insufficient legal process as may have been the case here. Unfortunately, Liberty Safe’s statement leads to more questions than answers.

In March, RITE sued Democratic Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes arguing his office’s Elections Procedures Manual violates the law regarding the mail-inn ballot signature verification process. “While state law requires county recorders to match mail-ballot signatures with signatures in the voter’s ‘registration record,’ the Secretary instructed them to use a broader and less reliable universe of comparison signatures,” the group said in a Monday news release. “That means the Secretary was requiring ballots to be counted despite using a signature that did not match anything in the voter’s registration record. This was a clear violation of state law,” RITE asserted. […] The court said that the “statute is clear and unambiguous” requiring “the recorder to review the voter’s registration card” and not other documents with the voter’s signature. Napper further noted, “There is no ambiguity in the statute or process.”

Farrell: Blinken visits Kyiv amid challenging Ukrainian counteroffensive

Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Kyiv on Wednesday in a gesture of support as Ukraine’s counteroffensive against Russian forces grinds into its fourth month with only small gains. Blinken took the typical route to the Ukraine, arriving in Poland on Tuesday evening before taking an overnight train to Kyiv. He has taken the trip to the war-torn country four times since the invasion began and six since taking office. Many Ukrainians volunteered in these early days of war. Out of 6.1 million living abroad, some returned to defend their country. […] Ukraine is now insistent on drafting everyone. Since a large number of draft-eligible men fled abroad — 163,287 live in Germany alone — they need to be extradited. Poland already began the process of deporting Ukrainians back home to fill the trenches. Moreover, the Defense Ministry approved new drafting rules under which men suffering from disabilities ranging from slow progressing nervous system disorders to hemorrhagic conditions are now eligible to be drafted. Morale and effectiveness of this kind of army is questionable. […] The volunteers who answered the call early in the war were likely ideological and educated. Obituaries commemorated the flower of Ukraine—an activist, an actor, an astrophysicist. Men escaping the draft are wealthy and connected, educated, and living in large population centers. The ones dragged into combat now are poor and rural. The greatest loss to the country has been the departure of women and children.

Ring: Non-COVID deaths are still way higher than normal. Why?

According to data reported weekly by the CDC, the death rate in America remains elevated. In the six years prior to the COVID era, deaths in the United States averaged between 2.6 and 2.8 million people per year. These averages are adjusted for population growth, and with a population as large as the U.S., the numbers should be, and are, remarkably stable. During the three years immediately preceding the 2020, for example, the population growth adjusted death rate from all causes varied by only 1.5 percent. None of that is true today. The increase in total deaths – deaths from all causes, not just COVID deaths – is up significantly. If the period between October 2019 and June 2023 had adhered to predictable mortality rates, 10.5 million Americans would have died. Instead, during that period, 12.4 people died. This prolonged period of so-called excess deaths, 17 percent above normal, is only rivaled by the estimated 675,000 deaths from Spanish Flu in America in 1918-19 when the country had a much smaller population. To illustrate how aberrant these grim statistics are, the chart below plots on a blue line the actual weekly deaths from all causes in the United States from the Fall of 2019 through the Spring of 2023. The grey line plots how many deaths would have occurred if mortality rates had adhered to predictable trends based on highly consistent statistics from the six prior years, 2013 through 2019. The data is indisputable, even if the causes remain mired in controversy. During the so-called COVID era, nearly 2.0 million people are dead who, if it had been normal times, would still be alive today. There appears to be no end in sight, even though the horrific surges appear to be behind us. […] Altogether, based on CDC statistics, the difference between excess deaths and deaths reported as COVID deaths in the United States over the past three years now exceeds 650,000. The percentage of excess deaths that are not recorded as COVID deaths has never been higher, and currently exceeds 80 percent. Without far more analysis, as well as the truths that will eventually emerge through the filter of history, it is sufficient to say excess deaths in the United States that aren’t caused by COVID might be primarily the sum of increases in suicides, murders, car accidents, drug overdoses, a disproportionately large number of 1946 babies reaching the limit of their life expectancy, and deferred diagnoses and deferred treatments. Or it might be something else.

Steiner argues that American education needs a clear and organized focus on ethics, beauty, and academic rigor to achieve its core purpose of preparing students to seek what Aristotle called eudaimonia, or human flourishing. Steiner’s critique of the education system is insightful and comprehensive. His call to reorient education around something akin to the classical Transcendentals – the True, the Good, and the Beautiful – is most welcome. But his prescription for what ails America’s schools is ultimately inadequate. Steiner’s recommendations are at once far too concrete to unite America’s many factions in a culture thoroughly soaked in materialism and moral relativism and also insufficiently rooted in a specific Judeo-Christian ethic to actually form students in the ethical life Steiner desires students to achieve. Steiner, who is executive director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy, devotes four of the five chapters in A Nation at Thought to diagnosing the fundamental problems with American education. His arguments are so insightful, those chapters alone make the book worthy of the reader’s consideration. Education’s “Great Distractors” Steiner begins by arguing, as have others, that American schools struggle for lack of clarity as to their core purpose. But as Steiner demonstrates, the education system is failing at virtually all its frequently competing goals. Whether it is promoting academic achievement, creating better opportunities for poor and minority students, preparing students for college and careers, or forming students for the responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society, Steiner shows that our schools are failing to show meaningful progress in any area. The reasons for these failures are due to what Steiner calls . . .

This past Sunday, Small preached a sermon called “It’s Here Somewhere,” which was based on the parable of the lost coin, which Jesus tells in Luke 15:8-10. Here’s the short parable for the context of the sermon: Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, “Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.” Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents. What Jesus is getting at in this parable is that even one soul who comes to faith in Him is worth celebrating, and it doesn’t take a seminary degree to reach that conclusion. But Dr. Small brought in a novel interpretation of this parable: that the government “sanctions” the killing of black people like the racist shooting in Jacksonville, Fla., last month. […] What all of this has to do with Jesus and the Bible and the Gospel is beyond me. But when it comes to progressive Christianity, you don’t have to tie anything to the timeless truth of God’s Word. All that matters is wokeness and politics. You’re killing me, Dr. Small — and you’re leading your congregation astray.

On September 28, Israel’s Supreme Court is expected to rule in favor of a petition from the far-left Movement for Quality Government to overturn the November 1, 2022 elections. In January, MQG petitioned the Supreme Court asking the justices to ban newly sworn in Netanyahu from serving in office. MQG argued that with all due respect to the 2.4 million Israelis who voted for Netanyahu, as a criminal defendant, Netanyahu is legally “incapacitated” from performing his duties in office and therefore, the Supreme Court should order the Attorney General Gali Baharav Miara to declare Netanyahu “incapacitated “and oust him from power. MQG’s petition was ridiculous on its face. The Supreme Court ruled in an 11-0 judgment in March 2020 that Netanyahu may serve as Prime Minister while standing trial. Basic Law: The Government, stipulates that a Prime Minister can only be compelled to leave office if he has been convicted of criminal charges, and even then, only after he has exhausted all appeals. Until the MQG submitted its petition, the incapacitation clause of the law was understood to refer only to physical or mental incapacitation. Moreover, no law empowers the Attorney General to deem the Prime Minister incapacitated. That power was vested in Israel’s elected leaders in the government and Knesset. All the same, the justices agreed to adjudicate the petition.
