(Biden DOJ’s injustice system) Sperry: Leniency on Tap for Anti-Trump Leaker of Thousands of Tax Returns

Another apparent “sweetheart deal” negotiated by President Biden’s Justice Department in a politically charged case is drawing scrutiny. Former IRS contractor Charles Edward Littlejohn, who stole and helped publicize the confidential tax records of Donald Trump and an estimated 7,500 other wealthy Americans, could face little or no jail time when he’s sentenced later this month, because the DOJ allowed him to plead guilty to a single felony count. In a new court filing, prosecutors acknowledge the plea deal “does not account for the fact that he leaked thousands of individuals’ tax returns. His [sentencing] range would be the same today if he had leaked only a single return.” But instead of seeking prison time for each of his offenses – or even for the two separate mass thefts he committed, one in 2019 and another in 2020 – the DOJ is asking a federal judge to sentence Littlejohn to just 60 months, the maximum for a single offense under the statute. Some political leaders angry over the plea deal say he should get 60 years, not months, for his crime – the biggest heist of IRS taxpayer data in history.

The adjective “Orwellian” can be overused in our political discourse. But how else to describe a situation in which the federal government abdicates its responsibility to secure the nation’s wide-open border and then, when a state steps up to help stanch the bleeding, is told by that same federal government to stop — and, for good measure, that its efforts to help secure the border via a new razor wire barrier will be undone? There really is only one apt word: “Orwellian.” On Monday, the Supreme Court voted 5-4 — with moderate Chief Justice John Roberts and center-right Justice Amy Coney Barrett joining their liberal colleagues — in favor of the Biden administration, which had requested that the court permit its Border Patrol agents to cut or remove protective razor wire fencing installed by Texas officials along the besieged Rio Grande. The court’s ruling is simply astonishing. In America’s federalist constitutional order, both the federal government and the states act as fully sovereign actors operating within their delineated spheres of legitimate governing authority. The federal government — which was itself initially created in the late 1780s by the then-preexisting states — is in no position whatsoever to demand that states deliberately undermine their own sovereignty. That is especially true when the federal government itself obstinately refuses to secure the nation’s territorial integrity, as has been the case throughout Joe Biden’s disastrous presidency.

Conservatives are advocating for changing the Child Tax Credit expansion in the bipartisan tax deal that advanced out of the House Ways and Means Committee, seeking a change that would prohibit illegal immigrants from claiming the tax benefit. This legislation as it stands would increase the Child Tax Credit from $2,000 to $3,600 but it continues the existing policy of permitting illegal immigrants who file tax returns with tax identification numbers to collect the Child Tax Credit for their children. […] A GOP congressional source who declined to be identified because he is not authorized to make public policy statements told Just the News that he thinks it’s the wrong move for Congress to turn the Child Tax Credit into a welfare-style program that can be collected even if an individual owes nothing in federal taxes and does not work.

As part of the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the State Department was tasked with producing a report on the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to censor and intimidate Americans. The issue has fueled bipartisan concerns in Congress as China’s government orchestrates propaganda campaigns inside the United States and works to silence its critics. […] The State Department confirmed that the reporting mandate was handed over to James Madison University and said that U.S. officials did not play any role in producing the analysis or providing guidance.

A Biden judicial nominee under fire for his work with an anti-Israel think tank has another radical left-wing group on his resume. Adeel Mangi, President Joe Biden’s nominee for the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, served on the board of the Legal Aid Society of New York from 2017 to 2021. The organization is best known for representing indigent clients in New York City, but it has also been behind campaigns to defund police and shut down U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A program partially-funded by the city of Denver that pays homeless people a regular stipend is eligible to migrants as long as they meet the criteria, according to the city. The Denver Basic Income Program, which was started in 2021 with the aid of $2 million from the city of Denver, announced it will go at least six months more beginning in February 2024. The $2 million the city gave Denver Basic Income Project in 2022 was “earmarked for women, families and transgender and gender non-conforming individuals,” according to a city statement to The Center Square. […] The city of Denver has used $4 million from the federal American Rescue Plan Act to fund the program.
