Though it might feel like we abandoned our right to make choices in the blink of an eye, informed consent started to lose its footing in medicine, and in culture more generally, in the years leading up to 2020. Almost 20 years before Covid, ethicist Onora O’Neill callously wrote that “informed consent procedures in medicine […] are useless for selecting public health policies.” Her idea was that public health policies must be uniform to be effective, and allowing for personal choice creates the possibility of divergence. For O’Neill, there can be no exceptions regarding individuals’ masking or vaccination choices, for example, and success at limiting the spread of a lethal virus. You can either have safety or individual choice and, when the two conflict, informed consent must give way to the more important value of safety. When I was a graduate student studying medical ethics in the early 2000s, the value of informed consent was so obvious that it was treated almost as a prima facie good, as something with great moral weight. Its value was grounded in the fundamental belief – a belief with deep philosophical roots – that all humans are rational, autonomous (or self-governing) persons who deserve respect. And one of the basic ways of respecting a person is to respect the choices persons make.

We had some good news recently: the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee voted to recommend two articles of impeachment against Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. The matter now will be taken up by the entire House. If the House votes to impeach (which is by no means certain, given the number of RINOs who populate the House), Mayorkas will have to stand trial in the Senate. Under Mayorkas, the Department of Homeland Security has been totally emasculated, at least with respect to the securing of our border with Mexico. Millions of illegals have poured into the United States under his watch. Mayorkas has in effect become the best friend of the Mexican drug cartels and the child traffickers. Thanks to Mayorkas’s abdication of border protection, the Mexican drug cartels have flooded the United States with fentanyl and other deadly or potentially deadly drugs. This has resulted in the deaths of approximately 100,000 American citizens every year. […] The Constitution of the United States carefully defines the crime of treason in Article Three, Section 3 as levying war against the United States “or in adhering to their enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.” Conviction of treason under the Constitution requires the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act. Venegas: Chinese State Media Issues Ominous Warning About ‘World War’ With NATO

The high tensions between Russia and NATO have seemingly escalated in recent weeks after the military alliance’s announcement last month of its largest military exercise in more than 35 years. Dubbed “Steadfast Defender 2024,” the operation launched in late January and will run through May. It ultimately will include participation of around 90,000 military personnel from 31 NATO allies and Sweden. NATO officials have said the exercise will test the allies’ ability to quickly deploy forces and test new defense plans. Military analysts have speculated Steadfast Defender is meant to prepare alliance members for the potential of a future Russian invasion on NATO territory. The military alliance’s announcement about the operation did not mention Russia by name, though based on documents from the military alliance obtained by Reuters, Russia is viewed as the biggest security threat to its member nations. One of the primary goals of the exercise will be to “demonstrate NATO’s ability to rapidly deploy forces from North America and other parts of the alliance to reinforce the defense of Europe.”

The report said that the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program has “increased dramatically” since May 2023, in part due to the series of events that have unfolded in the wake of the Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack on Israel. “The volatile situation in the region is providing Iran with a unique opportunity and increased internal justification for building nuclear weapons while the United States and Israel’s resources to detect and deter Iran from succeeding are stretched thin,” the report said. “The ongoing conflicts are leading to the neglect of the Iranian nuclear threat at a time when Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities have never been greater.”

They did this in the name of resisting Israel—until the Arab uprising of 2011 and the subsequent turmoil in Syria, Iraq, and beyond. During this period, the purity of Iranian-backed militias such as Lebanese Hezbollah was horribly tarnished when they said they killed fellow Arabs and Muslims while attempting to prop up Tehran’s allies, most notably Syria’s Bashar al-Assad. This ultimately created the strategic and diplomatic space for Arab countries and Israel (and the United States) to expand the Camp David Accords into the Abraham Accords—realigning Arab and Israeli interests against Iran’s attempt to violently expand its influence in the region.

Then came the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. While Iran had long supported “resistance” groups to Israel like Hamas, initial reports indicated the attack’s timing and severity caught Tehran off guard. But much like its adversary the United States, Iran did not want a wider regional war. Four months later, a closer look shows Iran is unfolding a much more measured and calculated escalation that now threatens to expand as Israel continues its assault on Gaza.

MacDonald: The Decadence of Identity Politics

Gender studies comes to policing. Among anti-cop legislators, “defund the police” may have lost some currency, but “demoralize the police” is doing just fine. On January 30, the New York City Council passed the How Many Stops Act, over the veto of Mayor Eric Adams. The law requires New York police officers to fill out a form nearly every time they interact with a civilian. If, for example, an officer asks a potential bystander to a shooting if he had witnessed that shooting, the officer will have to complete a form listing the bystander’s race, sex, and age. Are there other potential witnesses in the area who urgently need to be contacted before they disperse? Too bad. Identity-based paperwork comes first. (If an officer waits to the end of his shift to finish filling out the forms, he will still likely need to have made some contemporaneous record of his encounters.) The department’s personnel will spend hundreds of hours a day cumulatively on this bureaucratic task—time diverted from bringing criminals to justice. The rationale for this unnecessary bill, like almost everything encumbering policing today, is the council’s belief that the NYPD routinely harasses people of color, whether suspects or witnesses. Never mind that civilians in these newly red-taped investigatory stops are free to ignore the officer’s questions, preserve their anonymity, and walk away. The council still sees a bigoted purpose in an officer’s reaching out to the public for help in solving crime.

Then, reporters cornered Biden at the Chinatown Mall in Las Vegas, where he stopped for a boba tea — he got a pineapple coconut twist. Leveraging the fate of the hostages to compel an Israeli surrender to Hamas is a sick, manipulative strategy that is doomed to political failure. […] The Biden administration recently tasked CIA Director William Burns with brokering an ambitious deal that, as The Washington Post reported, would include the release of all the remaining Israeli hostages in Gaza in exchange for a six-week ceasefire, the release of Palestinian prisoners at a 3-to-1 ratio, the repositioning of Israeli troops in Gaza, and an increase in humanitarian aid to the Strip. All this spells an end to the war short of an Israeli victory—which is to say, it would be a victory for Hamas. Against the backdrop of this American initiative, internal scuffling has resumed in Israel. The U.S. posture reinvigorated the belief among die-hard Israeli supporters of the “two-state solution” that what they cannot sell to voters will now be more easily imposed on an Israel chastened by a deal which would in effect spell an Israeli defeat. This hope has seduced some of them into making a gross political miscalculation: a chillingly cynical attempt to leverage the suffering of the hostages and their families in order to promote the deal that would stop the war.

FOX: The Curious Prosecution of Jennifer Crumbley Is Fraught With Peril for Parents

The state of Michigan is determined to put mother Jennifer Crumbley behind bars for manslaughter in the shooting deaths of four Oxford High School students. Fifteen-year-old Ethan Crumbley, Jennifer’s son, carried out the shooting. The state says that the mom should have seen red flags and somehow stopped the tragedy. James Crumbley, Jennifer’s husband will be tried later for the same thing. Both have been sitting in prison awaiting trial for almost three years. It is the first time any parents have been charged criminally for a school shooter’s actions. Their disturbed son pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.

But the state and the community want more vengeance, […] Perhaps upping the ante and putting parents in prison will do it, they think. But there are problems with this case. […] The jury is being asked to find Crumbley guilty of the deaths of children she didn’t harm. But there is a child she arguably did harm whom the state would rather not notice. All the evidence points to the Crumbleys being absent and oblivious parents at best and abusive and neglectful parents at worst. Why didn’t the state charge them with child abuse of Ethan? If they had, it would probably be a slam dunk. […] Why didn’t the state charge the Crumbleys with neglect and abuse of the child they were responsible for instead of manslaughter for the children their son killed? We should all be asking why prosecutors for the state chose to break new ground in the war against parents instead of using easier laws on the books to punish these two. Who is your government planning to use this new weapon against after they jail the Crumbleys?

Russia is so isolated and such an interesting story that anyone who can go there and get any kind of perspective ought to be praised for doing so. Yes, it’s dangerous; Carlson could get arrested as that poor Wall Street Journal correspondent was. But someone needs to try. That so many of these swamp parties, all of which have an interest in big, bigger, biggest aid packages for Ukraine and all their consultant contracts, want to shut off free journalistic inquiry is nothing short of outrageous.

Major scientific studies on the potential harm of abortion pills were retracted on Monday by their publisher, just weeks before the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on the availability of such drugs. Three studies, including two on the potential harms of the abortion pill just, were retracted on Monday by Sage Publishing, an independent academic publishing company. The retraction notice states that an independent review of the studies was conducted due to a single reader’s complaint that the studies included misleading data and that the authors were affiliated with a pro-life organization, the Charlotte Lozier Institute, presenting a conflict of interest. The authors of the studies say the retractions are a politically-motivated effort to discredit research that was cited in U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk’s April 2023 decision to suspend approval of mifepristone, the drug used in roughly half of all abortions in the United States.
