Just as they incorrectly alleged that mask-wearing and vaccination were not a violation of liberty because they affected others, so too they will argue that your “carbon footprint” so endangers others, that your liberty will be of necessity, stripped from you. You are not free to gravely harm others. […] There seem to be four positions on environmental questions, and three of them can be occupied by Conservatives and Libertarians, but one cannot. The Chinese Coast Guard escalated its presence around the Kinmen Islands near Fujian province on Monday in response to an incident on February 14 in which Taiwanese authorities reportedly chased away a Chinese “fishing” vessel, causing it to capsize and killing half the men on board. The Kinmen Islands are located about 4 miles from the Chinese province of Fujian and close to 190 miles from Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. The Taiwanese government claims them as part of its territory, establishing “prohibited” and “restricted” water in which it bans Chinese vessels entirely or reserves the right to expel them, respectively. The Taiwanese Mainland Affairs Office, the federal government agency responsible for relations with communist China, insisted following the incident on Wednesday that it was necessary because China has increased the intimidating presence of purported “fishing” ships and other vessels in waters that Taiwan claims as its own, including a growing number of ships that have no name and no formal registration, making it impossible for Taiwanese authorities to ensure they are not a threat.

The world today presents a picture of uncommon chaos. The complexities of modern society require a class of specially trained persons to manage them, yet public trust in our elites and the institutions they inhabit has plummeted. Every description of reality is now a battleground, including the opinions of scientists. Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt likens the moment to a new Tower of Babel: an incomprehensible noise. The causes are global and structural, with radical changes in the information environment playing a decisive role. While the pettiness and corruption of incumbent elites are evident, simply replacing them won’t fix things. Inevitably, chaos has triggered a reaction—an impulse to reimpose some sort of order. Governments, legislatures, bureaucrats, regulators—all have lost the taste for debate or compromise and have fallen in love with mandates. Elites have sought to replace the old-fashioned democratic process, muddled by design, with what they call “our democracy,” which expects, by right of superior virtue, the triumph of “our” moral and political judgments. Those opposed to “our democracy” lie beyond the pale—deemed insurgents, racists, homophobes, Islamophobes, climate deniers, vaccine skeptics, Russia lovers—a long and lengthening list of those who don’t deserve a hearing. In Trump’s telling, the leader asked him, “Well sir, if we don’t pay and we’re attacked by Russia, will you protect us?” Trump answered by saying: “No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. You gotta pay.” Almost immediately an avalanche of shopworn accusations of Trump being a Putin sycophant determined to surrender Europe to the tender mercies of a rampaging Russia filled the airwaves and saturated the internet allowing the Democrats and their mouthpieces in the legacy media to reprise the long-debunked Russia collusion hoax of 2016-17. Apparently, Trump also stunned many European leaders and much of the European media. So much so that the New York Times ran an article titled “An Outburst by Trump on NATO May Push Europe to Go It Alone” as more European leaders are now quietly discussing among themselves how they might prepare for the possibility that America removes itself from being the centerpiece of the alliance. The leaders of Europe are finally beginning to understand the views of a majority of Americans who are increasingly concerned about the seemingly endless litany of near-intractable domestic crises, the skyrocketing national debt, and the dire future of the United States.

The newest incident involved a plane traveling across airspace on Saturday night where the Iran-backed Houthis reside; Somalian sources insisted to the Israeli broadcaster Kann that a group in Somaliland that issued false instructions to the flight crew was responsible. Suggestions were made that the effort was an attempt to steer the plane toward dangerous areas. But the plane’s staff used other communication methods to avert any trouble, cross-referencing data with other air traffic controllers.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s fight to avoid facing spying charges in the United States may be nearing an end following a protracted legal saga in the U.K. that included seven years of self-exile inside a foreign embassy and five years in prison. Assange faces what could be his final court hearing in London starting Tuesday as he tries to stop his extradition to the U.S. The High Court has scheduled two days of arguments over whether Assange can ask an appeals court to block his transfer. If the court doesn’t allow the appeal to go forward, he could be sent across the Atlantic.

Chapados: Over 18,000 students could be suspended in a single district for not updating their vaccine records

More than 18,000 elementary school students were threatened with a suspension from their school district for not having updated vaccine records. The Region of Waterloo Public Health in Ontario, Canada, issued suspension orders that required young students to get all their necessary vaccines and update their records within a six-week period or face suspension. The region has issued the orders to a total of 18,643 students who have until March 27, 2024, to update their records.
