Between the ongoing war in Gaza and Houthi attacks on Western shipping in the Red Sea, the media has had plenty of gruesome foreign policy fodder for the content mill. However, this coverage has come at the expense of the ongoing grinding conflict in Ukraine, which has quickly gone from a euphoric cause célèbre to a now embarrassing catastrophe that is best shoved in the closet and forgotten like all the rest of America’s decades of costly foreign policy disasters. In recent weeks and months, the tone of coverage around the ongoing war in Ukraine has changed. At one point, any Russian advance was treated as a fluke and any Ukrainian success was seen as the precursor to an inevitable victory. The tone has now decidedly shifted, however, toward a more pessimistic view of Ukraine’s prospects and the fulfillment of NATO/Western goals. We wrote in a previous piece that time was not on Ukraine’s side. Now it appears that the mainstream press is starting to come around to the same conclusion. […] Commentators and scholars like Mearsheimer have long warned that the West would end up leaving Ukraine out to dry and were ignored for years, but increasingly such warnings appear prescient. Some Ukrainians have woken up to this grim reality. As former Ukrainian presidential advisor, and now Zelensky rival, Oleksii Arestovych recently remarked, “In the conflict of globalists and realists, we made a bet on the wrong side. The Biden campaign is using the widely read newsletter Politico Playbook to roll out the president’s plan to address the rising cost of housing. It is President Joe Biden‘s “personal preoccupation,” Politico says, his “secret policy obsession.” Given the importance of housing in American lives, it seems strange that the president would keep his concern for the matter a “secret.” But there it is. Playbook tells a story from 50 years ago, when Biden was a young senator, and legendary Democratic Sen. Hubert Humphrey told Biden that to be effective, he would have to focus on a single issue and make it his own. Humphrey suggested Biden become “Mr. Housing,” leading an effort to provide “decent housing in America for middle-class and lower-middle-class people and the poor.” And then this, from Politico, with a straight face: “Fast-forward a half-century: Biden is in the White House, and that long-ago advice seems to have taken hold.”

The team decided to forfeit because the injured girl’s female teammates were afraid of getting hurt themselves. The girls made the right call, to be sure. But why was it necessary in the first place? And why was it up to teenage girls to make that call? […] How far men should go to protect their daughters is a conversation that needs to be had. But to have that conversation, first, men must do something. Anything.

It’s a dystopian fact that advice for young girls on how to bind their breasts (safely!) is available everywhere online, from medical sites to social media. Now Gemini, Google’s AI, acts as a kind of one-stop shop where you can find the most common tips digested into one easy list.

Ah, you sweet summer child. When Twitter user “Town Moron” asked Gemini about binding, he reported: “it will tell me that it can’t give specific instructions because of the potential for harm, but essentially do it anyway.” So hardly even-handed. Unfortunately, this one-sided approach actually does seem to reflect the gist of most online binding guides. Part of the trouble for Gemini is that specific recommendations tend not to be based in research so much as garnered from online communities’ shared anecdotal experience and arbitrary limits. […] Reminders to limit binding or to discuss binding with your doctor, such as Google’s chatbot provides, are thus insufficient: girls have been convinced binding is life saving. A more accurate binder warning would resemble that found on a website dedicated to selling medical devices: “Binding that is not prescribed is unsafe and may lead to permanent breast deformity, scarring, and constriction of lungs. Long-term binding may also lead to a possible future mastectomy.” Disconnected from their bodies and at war with their breasts, these girls likely regard even the threat of future mastectomy with indifference or even eagerness. But the sources of these desires, and their durability, are “complex and multifaceted,” as Gemini might say. This is a superhighway to crippling regret. Bad medical advice stems from the proposition that there is such a thing as binding safely, and that binding has mental health benefits. Contrary to the Gemini chatbot and nothing-to-see-here diversions from the press, the Binding Project research actually found there is no such thing as a safe binder or safe brand.

WAR IN ISRAEL

When Israelis speak about Oct. 7, they frequently say “there are no words.” But one word they consistently use is “shattered.”

Israeli psychologists have been treating severe trauma, complex trauma and collective trauma. The word “trauma,” however, fails to convey the scale, the savagery or the sadism of events that day. The term does not encompass the complex mix of disorientation, anguish, emotional overload and the experience of utter brokenness after the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust. There is no word for the shock felt by Jews around the world when Israel was suddenly and without warning attacked by thousands of rockets targeting civilians from the north to the south and from the river to the sea. There is no word to describe what it is like to be a Jew kidnapped by terrorists indoctrinated since early childhood to believe that murdering Jews is rewarded in the afterlife. Or to know that the people you love are in the hands of terrorists who delight in rape, torture and slaughter; who enjoy forcing parents and children to watch as they inflict horrors on loved ones.

In the wake of Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack, MIT president Sally Kornbluth responded to a rise in campus anti-Semitism with a new initiative: “Standing Together Against Hate.” Launched on Nov. 14 of last year, Kornbluth trumpeted it as an effort aimed at “community building.” She put MIT chancellor Melissa Nobles in charge. Trouble began to brew when, as a part of this initiative, the school invited a Hamas apologist to speak, an event slated to take place on March 18. Last month, members of MIT’s Jewish Alumni Alliance met with Kornbluth to request that the school also consider hosting Dennis Ross, the former U.S. envoy to the Middle East and a well-respected diplomat who has served in both Democratic and Republican administrations.

Penn Faculty for Justice in Palestine files legal complaint hoping to stop federal investigation into campus anti-Semitism […] Huda Fakhreddine, an associate professor of Arabic literature at Penn’s Middle East Center, filed her suit against the school Saturday. It accuses Penn of cracking down on anti-Israel speech and aims to stop the transfer of university documents to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. The committee’s chairwoman, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R., N.C.), sent a letter to Penn leaders in January requesting their internal deliberations on anti-Semitic campus incidents.

Thanks to Democrats, in seven states abortion is now unrestricted until birth. Virginia Democrats also pushed for letting doctors give sick patients lethal injections. Gov. Glenn Younkin is the only barricade left to extremist legislation legalizing human killing in Virginia after weeks of contentious debate over legislation encompassing abortion and physician-assisted suicide. In an otherwise cooperative, bipartisan session, the Democrat majority aggressively stamped out proposed pro-life laws. The majority also resurrected a radical abortion amendment to the Virginia Constitution in week one, advanced physician-assisted suicide, and introduced legislation that would essentially remove liability from abortionists and gender-altering surgeons. […] “This seems to be the one industry Democrats don’t want to regulate,” Freitas said. Since 2020 Freitas has sponsored a Born Alive Act that would require an abortionist to provide reasonable medical care to an infant who survives an abortion. Last year the act passed the Republican-controlled House, but was denied a hearing by the Democrat-majority Senate. This year the legislation was left to die in a Senate subcommittee.

Moran: Kamala Harris Will Make a Pilgrimage to an Abortion Clinic

Harris will visit one of the administration’s most important corporate partners, Planned Parenthood. The vice president will actually tour an abortion mill, becoming the highest-ranking politician to visit an abortion clinic. How proud she must be. No word on whether Mrs. Harris will witness an abortion, although it wouldn’t surprise me if there are some of her supporters who devoutly wish she would. After all, it’s “just a medical procedure.” One troubling point: Why call it “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” when an abortion clinic does exactly the opposite of promoting “reproduction”? […] I notice there hasn’t exactly been wall-to-wall coverage of this visit. The White House is smart not to openly spit in the face of pro-lifers. As it is, the efforts to paint the administration as “moderate” took a big hit.

Hazzard: Father of Michigan school shooter convicted of manslaughter

Michigan jury convicted the father of a school shooter who murdered four of his high school classmates at his school of manslaughter on Thursday. Prosecutors argued that James Crumbley, 47, carried some of the responsibility of his son’s fatal actions by ignoring warning signs, according to Reuters. His wife Jennifer Crumbley, 45, was found guilty of manslaughter last month. Their son, Ethan Crumbley, was sentenced to life in prison in December after he pleaded guilty in 2022 to two dozen charges, including terrorism and first-degree murder.
