As an historian, I found it fascinating to watch the Left try to impose new language to describe people in the country illegally. The Left has gradually pushed accepted language away from “illegal aliens” (the term in law), to “illegal immigrants” (the most common term), to “undocumented immigrants” (the Left’s current favorite term), and now to “newcomers” (the Joe Biden White House’s latest experiment in gaining language dominance). It all reminds me of Vladimir Lenin’s great language coup of 1903. […] At least as far back as the French Revolution, the Left has had a passion for labeling things and ideas to gain language dominance. This process as applied to illegal immigration began at least 25 years ago for me. That’s when I first remember being lectured that using the term “illegal immigrants” was wrong, and I should learn to say “undocumented.”I thought this was nuts then, and I still do now. […] After more than 15 years of intermittent attacks from their neighbors, Alumim’s residents ostensibly knew the drill: One had 30 seconds to scurry into reinforced rooms (mamadim) and remain there for 10 minutes, until the risk of being hit by rocket or mortar fire, or falling shrapnel from the interceptions, had passed. This time it was different. The unprecedented barrage of rockets and mortars was quickly followed by a sustained ground assault by thousands of heavily armed men at 30 different points along the border. Their mission, explicitly defined in documents later found on the dead bodies of their commanders and on computer files, was to kill as many people as possible, to take hostages, and wreak destruction on both civilian and military installations. A map of Alumim found on the body of one of the Palestinian commanders showed two different lines of attack. The one carried out by the first squad was pointed toward the nerve center of the kibbutz—the nishkiya (armory), the secretariat, and the kibbutz’s “war room” (hamal), a below-ground, two-room complex monitoring the various security cameras spread around the kibbutz.

Two of the three ‘squatters’ who were caught red-handed in a Queens woman’s home fled in disgrace today after being confronted by the media. The unnamed man and woman covered their faces with hoodies today as they fled the home in Flushing, refusing to answer questions on their way out.

The house is owned by Adele Andaloro, a mother who inherited the property from her parents. Earlier this week, Andaloro was put in handcuffs after a tense standoff at the house. She’d shown up to find multiple squatters who refused to move. Despite owning the house, she was put in handcuffs and taken away.

The incident is the latest in a string of stand-offs across the US, with homeowners growing increasingly frustrated by ludicrous laws that protect squatters and punish the names on the deed.

More than 1,200 of the nation’s public safety personnel died by suicide over a seven-year period, according to a report released by a nonprofit organization that tracks law enforcement suicides. From 2016 to 2022, there were 1,287 public safety personnel — identified in the report as law enforcement and corrections officers — who died by suicide, according to the First HELP and CNA Corporation report obtained by ABC News.

Jewell: Neuralink Posts Video Of First Human Patient Using Brain Chip To Play Chess With His Mind

Neuralink, the company co-founded by billionaire Elon Musk, showed video Wednesday of its first quadriplegic patient with a brain chip implant playing chess with his mind. The video, which was uploaded as a livestream to X by a Neuralink engineer, shows 29-year-old Noland Arbaugh sitting in front of a computer screen playing chess while discussing the new technology. Asked by the engineer to explain what he was doing, Arbaugh said he was moving the cursor on his computer with only his thoughts as he used the cursor to move chess pieces on the board. […] Arbaugh, an Arizona man and former Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, was paralyzed below his shoulders after a “freak diving accident” while he was working as a camp counselor eight years ago, The Daily Mail reported. Neuralink announced in January that it had successfully implanted a brain chip into Arbaugh, the company’s first human subject.

Zycher: Climate Policy Is a Federal Issue

The City and County of Honolulu about four years ago filed a “public nuisance” lawsuit against the energy producers, attempting to hold them liable for the purported effects of anthropogenic climate change in Hawaii, and accusing them of “deceiv[ing]” the public about the consequences of the emissions of greenhouse gases attendant upon the use of fossil fuels. The Hawaii Supreme Court last October affirmed a trial court decision not to dismiss the Honolulu lawsuit. The defendants now have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review that ruling, and to consider whether federal law precludes the application of state law to liability claims allegedly caused by interstate and international greenhouse gas emissions. The public interest would be well served if the Supreme Court takes up this review. The defendants clearly are correct. The Hawaii Supreme Court ruling conflicts with the unanimous April 2021 ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit dismissing New York City’s lawsuit against five of the largest fossil energy producers: Municipalities may not “utilize state tort law to hold multinational oil companies liable for the damages caused by global greenhouse gas emissions.” In other words, federal law precludes state-law claims because state and local governments may not exercise control over U.S. energy and climate policies in ways conflicting with federal policies. Despite the fact that Hawaii obviously is not part of the Second Circuit, other such lawsuits are in progress, and so it is important that the U.S. Supreme Court grants review of this case and clarifies the issue.
