I have a story about a recent visit to Mar-a-Lago for a conversation with former President Donald Trump. At any given moment, there are lots of subjects in the news one could ask Trump about, but I decided to focus on a longer-term story — how he managed to come back from the disastrous end of his presidency in early 2021 to become the 2024 Republican Party presidential nominee. The climate change public nuisance lawsuits are a particularly deep well of opportunity for leftwing activists and officials. Can’t stop people from buying meat through traditional regulations and legislation? Don’t worry, just say that meat companies have contributed to climate change and sue them for billions in an effort to all but stop them selling meat. Can’t stop people from buying gasoline? Don’t worry, just sue oil companies, car companies, or anyone else who sold a gas-powered product, citing climate change. Just think of the possibilities for the Left. If climate change is a public nuisance under state common law, then basically any local government can sue the maker of a common consumer product, demanding money to “abate” the nuisance of climate change, which is to say demanding that somehow these companies stop the effects of worldwide climate change with their checkbook.
It is hard to imagine a better path to reshaping large parts of our economy and society – and all without having to bother with details like public policy debates, the legislative process, or votes at the ballot box.

Ring: Floating Offshore Wind Projects Will Squander Hundreds of Billions of Dollars
In December 2022, after years of planning, the U.S. Dept. of the Interior sold rights to develop offshore wind in five lease areas off the California coast. Five companies submitted successful bids, paying a total of $757 million for development rights. These leases are located 20 miles off the California coast in water approximately 4,000 feet deep. The floating wind turbines will be tethered to the ocean floor with cables, and each of them will also require a high-voltage transmission cable that will pass through the water and traverse the sea bottom for 20 miles to connect to the grid onshore. The environmental impact and logistical challenges of installing and operating these floating leviathans are devastating. With 25 gigawatts of installed “nameplate capacity” called for by 2045, even at 10 megawatts per wind turbine, this would require 2,500 floating turbines. Each one would tower roughly 1,000 feet from the water line to the tip of a rotor blade in vertical position, with substantial additional structure required underwater in the form of floatation pontoons and counterweights. At least eight states are planning to ban the sale of new gas-powered cars in the next decade – and others are considering joining them. Only zero-emission vehicles can be sold in participating states beginning from the 2035 model year, according to the Advanced Clean Cars II legislation. The rule, which was first adopted by California, means that automakers and dealerships would be banned from selling new gas cars in these states from that point onwards. Americans will not be forced to take their gas-powered cars off the road, however, and will still be able to buy used and secondhand gas vehicles. These states have gone further than the latest federal legislation announced last week, where the Biden administration released new rules to gradually phase out gas cars by 2032.

Mark Green (R-TN), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, “TSA is reportedly allowing aliens without verifying identity documents to pass through airport security checkpoints” nationwide.” Instead, TSA is “relying on unverified biographical information gathered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) through the CBP One application (CBP One),” the letter continues. The CBP One app allegedly allows many illegal aliens to go through airport TSA checkpoints with minimal identification while Americans are required to undergo rigorous security checks. This has some Americans up in arms. Sonya LaBosco and the Air Marshal National Council have partnered closely with the Committee to keep pressure on Pekoske to address this and other national security issues. While some illegals are sailing through TSA checkpoints, Americans must provide the proper TSA-approved photo IDs and are seemingly required to submit to facial recognition technology (CAT-2) used at American airports. […] The CBP One app is being used liberally at our nation’s borders, including our airports, allegedly to make the immigration process more efficient. The app allows illegals to schedule an appointment with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers to expeditiously grant them temporary human parole. The aliens are then released into the interior U.S. with a “notice to appear.” In many cases the appearance comes years after their entry. A young police officer was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop in New York on Monday night by a career criminal with 21 prior arrests. Officer Jonathan Diller, 31, was just three years into the job when he was gunned down while asking a driver why he had parked at a bus stop. His alleged killer, 34-year-old Guy Rivera, had been repeatedly jailed for drug and violent offenses and was arrested on a gun charge as recently as April of last year just yards from tonight’s killing. Officer Diller leaves a young widow, Stephanie, and a one year-old son at his home in Long Island, and New York Mayor Eric Adams paid tribute to the couple as he announced the news last night.

Carlton McPherson, 24, allegedly shoved a 45-year-old man onto the tracks at the 125th Street station at Lexington Avenue in East Harlem as a 4 train approached around 7pm. According to authorities, the attack was unprovoked and the victim has not yet been identified. McPherson has a lengthy criminal history and was arrested at the age of 16. He also has a history of mental illness. He was arrested in October 2023 for assault but was freed on bond and is expected back in court on that charge in July, sources told the New York Post.

John Spencer, who chairs West Point’s Urban Warfare Studies Program, explained that the terrorist organization’s goal for victory is a concerted political-military strategy. Hamas, he said, knew that Israeli Defense Forces would respond with force to its Oct. 7 assault in southern Israel. “They wanted Israel’s counterattack, and then they wanted to hold in the tunnels and use the hostages just to buy time for the international community—namely, the United States—to stop the IDF in their operations.” “Their only goal is to survive. […] It’s all about time. They want to survive Israel’s attack against them, which gives them immense political power. If they survive in any way, they have strategically won the war,” said Spencer. Hamas didn’t invent this strategy. This has been the Palestinians’ strategy for defeating Israel since at least the 1982 war in Lebanon. In that war, the PLO relied on the United States to force Israel to permit the PLO to survive to fight another day, by evacuating to Tunisia.

Following the historic American abstention from the UN Security Council resolution calling for an Israel–Hamas ceasefire in Gaza for the duration of Ramadan, the West is waiting to see how the situation develops on the ground. But with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaling that a full-scale invasion of Rafah to take out Hamas’s final stronghold will indeed commence, it’s worth examining what makes the United States’s abstention so significant and how it will affect Israel’s war effort, if at all. […] The most damning proof that Biden’s abstention was a colossal moral blunder is that Hamas rushed to praise it. It was also politically foolish and unrealistic: a newly released Harvard-Harris poll found that only 37 percent of Americans favor a ceasefire that would leave Hamas in place and the hostages in its clutches; 63 percent think that a ceasefire should happen only after the release of all hostages and Hamas’s removal from power. In Israel, 82 percent of the public supports an invasion of Rafah, leaving the government with virtually no other option.
