Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) called on the U.S. to stand up to the “generational threat” posed by China while unveiling a major report on Beijing’s “malign behavior” at the same time her husband’s law firm was working on behalf of companies linked to China’s military, intelligence, and security services.
As Cheney stood at the podium, her husband Philip Perry’s law firm was cashing in on legal and lobbying work that his employer — Latham & Watkins (LW), one of the largest law firms in the world — was doing for a host of Chinese companies, some of which were involved in the kind of activity that Cheney was warning had to be stopped. All of LW’s work discussed in this article was legal, and Perry didn’t work directly on these accounts. But as a partner at the firm, he benefits and profits from all its work. Perry’s firm’s work for Chinese entities and countries whose human rights abuses and authoritarian rule have troubled the U.S. for years seems to conflict with his wife’s frequent calls for America to stand up to autocratic regimes like China. The dynamic is one familiar to longtime observers of Washington, D.C.: a power couple calling out the very behavior from which they benefit.

Edelman: Iowa bill would require cameras in public school classrooms
Conservative lawmakers in Iowa introduced a bill this week that would require cameras to be installed in nearly every K-12 school classroom across the state, allowing parents to see livestreams. Teachers advocates have criticized the effort as one designed to censor classrooms and intimidate educators who focus on subjects such as race and history. The bill is the latest to be introduced by conservative legislators in states across the U.S., including Florida, who have launched efforts against what they say is critical race theory. The Iowa bill, H.F. 2177, would require that cameras be placed in every public school classroom in the state, except for physical education and special education classes. The cameras would feed to livestreams that could be viewed on the internet by parents, guardians and others. While the conditions underlying the heightened threat landscape have not significantly changed over the last year, the convergence of the following factors has increased the volatility, unpredictability, and complexity of the threat environment: (1) the proliferation of false or misleading narratives, which sow discord or undermine public trust in U.S. government institutions; (2) continued calls for violence directed at U.S. critical infrastructure; soft targets and mass gatherings; faith-based institutions, such as churches, synagogues, and mosques; institutions of higher education; racial and religious minorities; government facilities and personnel, including law enforcement and the military; the media; and perceived ideological opponents; and (3) calls by foreign terrorist organizations for attacks on the United States based on recent events.

Because of increasing specialization, most of today’s top government officials have spent their entire lives in government service. They lack the gentleman-amateur chops of a Dean Acheson or the business background of someone like Donald Trump. The results are not encouraging. One thing you learn in business is that bluffing is dangerous. It’s easier to make promises than to keep them, and that often it’s better to be ambiguous, to say nothing, or, if necessary, to communicate only in private. A good counterexample would be Barack Obama with his infamous “red line” in Syria. He said the Syrian government’s use of chemical weapons against civilians would cross a red line resulting in serious consequences and retaliation. Yet when Bashar al Assad allegedly approved the use of chemical weapons against a rebel civilian enclave, Obama did nothing. Setting aside the merits and demerits of our Syria policy, this is just bad business. It is the type of thing a coddled academic with no real life experience would think is a great idea, but something an ordinary real estate agent, bar manager, or car salesman knows is a bad idea. Threats box in the speaker and are only as effective as his perceived ability and willingness to back them up.
Biden’s life experience has done little more than Obama’s to prepare him for the moment. While he has been bloviating in the U.S. Senate since the 1970s, he has not covered himself with glory. His contributions to foreign policy typically have revealed him to be thoughtless and unsophisticated, opposing the mission to kill Osama bin Laden, among other things, while supporting the Iraq War.

So the peppy lady from those AT&T commercials just came out and claimed that the abortion from her past was a pleasant experience. Ah it’s just another day ending in y, isn’t it? Actress Milana Vayntrub, whom you’d probably recognize from those insipid AT&T commercials, recently penned a column in The Daily Beast for the sake of explaining just how important her abortion was to her. Not only did Vayntrub talk about the necessity of a woman’s right to murder her own offspring, she also spoke of it in very pleasant terms, calling it a “beautifully boring” experience. Unfortunately for her son/daughter, it was definitely the opposite kind of experience.

She was not really embarrassing herself but expressing the views of Black Lives Matter, and its Hollywood and Democratic funders, when she nonchalantly stated her opinion. And she was not at all flustered when she shot back at the usually equally outrageous Joy Behar and explained that what happened with the Nazis was just white people’s stuff. These are all quarrels among white people, who cannot be victims of “racism” since only blacks are allowed to hold that honor. Another participant on “The View,” Ana Navarro, tried to settle the matter by explaining that what the Nazis did to their victims was really about “white supremacy.” I see no evidence that Whoopi is questioning this event because she is an anti-Semite. She is simply telling us that whites being massacred is no big deal for her because this act involves those who don’t count as victims. This raises a problem that goes beyond what Ron Lauder and others who discern here a “rising tide of anti-Semitism” are objecting to. This dehumanization is aimed not just at Jews but at all white people (which seems to be something Lauder missed). We are experiencing a media-induced hate fest that will not go away simply because the GOP may pull off some victories in the fall.
