The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday shot down Gov. Ron DeSantis’ push to get the high court to rule on whether Rep. Al Lawson’s 200-mile congressional district linking Black neighborhoods must be kept intact during the state’s redistricting process. The GOP governor wants to dismantle the north Florida seat held by Lawson, a Black Democrat, to make a redistricting map more friendly to Republicans. DeSantis asked the high court to give him an advisory opinion on whether the district was protected under Florida’s voter-approved standards.

It’s been said that a crisis doesn’t create character, it reveals it. Far too often, the pandemic has shown that many Americans in positions of authority are of poor character. At least we know who the sadists are, since they so helpfully identified themselves. The line between being overly cautious and just plain cruel has been crossed repeatedly. This is where we are today in what had previously been thought of as civilization: Hospitals across the country are removing unvaccinated organ transplant patients from waiting lists. Medical ethicists are fine with this, because the patients need to be protected from illnesses while their bodies accept the new organs, and they are prioritized based on their chances of survival. These “ethicists,” however, come off as vindictive, “othering” the unvaccinated in line with the narrative. Moving these patients lower on the list based on a risk they assume seems acceptable, dropping them altogether is not. It’s intentionally punitive and ghoulish. The decisions reinforce, as well, the naked fact that the vaccine mandates are authoritarian power plays. A Virginia hospital that refused to provide Ivermectin prescribed by a doctor to a dying COVID patient was found in contempt of court before it finally relented and allowed the drug to be administered. It was too late, though. The woman died five days after the judge’s ruling. At Georgetown University,​​ . . .  […]  These few stories are at the shallow end of the pool of depravity. There are many more to be told. We could even add lockdowns and mask mandates outside of school settings to the list, due to the damage they’ve caused with no benefits in return.

While the Founding Fathers did their best to create documents that would stand the test of time, a persistent enough enemy with a good deal of creative schemes can find ways around everything. And so we’re dealing with the absurd situation in which a bureaucrat can decide if an amendment is in or not.
Three Republicans senators are urging the U.S. Archivist not to certify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) amid a campaign by Democrats, who are calling for the decades-old statute to be added to the Constitution. Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah) penned a letter to U.S. Archivist David Ferriero on Tuesday, asking for his “commitment” that he will not certify the ERA. The ERA, widely believed to be dead, was revived when lefties decided that getting states they now controlled to vote for it was a good gimmick. And much as with every one of their creative power grabs, we’re facing yet another crisis. This one is about as unconstitutional as it gets. […]  The letter comes as Democrats and advocacy groups are encouraging Ferriero to add the ERA to the Constitution as the 28th Amendment before he retires from his post in April.

Maloney (D-N.Y.), in remarks during a virtual news conference on the Equal Rights Amendment, Jan. 27 The battle over the Equal Rights Amendment has had many twists and turns since Congress first passed it and it was sent to the states 50 years ago for ratification. For proponents such as Maloney, the issue is a simple one — 38 states have ratified the amendment, most recently Virginia in 2020, and so now it is already part of the Constitution. All that is needed, advocates say, is for Ferriero — the U.S. archivist and chief administrator of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) since 2009 — to acknowledge that fact. “He says he believes in the ERA. Well, if you believe in it, just certify it. He’s the one holding it back,” Maloney said at a news conference sponsored by the ERA Coalition. “And it’s a technicality. Equality is not a technicality. Equality is a right. We have met every single requirement that was put forward. There were only two in the Constitution. One was that you had to have two-thirds of Congress; we had more than two-thirds of Congress when we passed it. And that 38 states needed to ratify it. We’ve done that!”
But it’s not so simple. The letter referenced by Maloney — who heads the House committee that oversees NARA — indicates no support by the archivist for the ERA. Moreover, every time the issue has been litigated in federal court, most recently in 2021, the pro-ERA side has lost, no matter whether the judge was appointed by a Democrat or Republican.

Earlier this week, Reuters reported that New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli sent a letter to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, expressing concern about the streaming platform hosting controversial content. While this incident seems no different than other attempts by governmental officials to prompt the private censorship of speech, DiNapoli’s calls on Spotify to remove “misinformation” related to Covid19 differ in kind—and thus constitutionality—from the demands made by other politicians, such as Massachusetts’ Sen. Elizabeth Warren. “Dear Mr. Ek,” DiNapoli opened, “I write as Trustee of the New York State Common Retirement Fund, one of the largest public pension funds in the United States, which holds and invests the assets of the New York State and Local Retirement System on behalf of its 1.1 million members, retirees and beneficiaries.” “As an investor in Spotify Technology SA,” the letter continued, “I am writing to express my concerns regarding the ongoing controversies related to Spotify’s content management practices.” […]  In this letter, DiNapoli expressed concerns over supposed “misinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic,” a clear reference to the continuing controversy over Joe Rogan’s podcast.

This means we can find the forms of journalism in the world today, and read the shapes of power from them. Since power is abstract and elusive and hard to describe directly, whereas journalism is concrete and easy to describe, journalism makes a perfect map of power. When we describe a regime as of some form—monarchy, oligarchy or democracy—what we mean is that power in that shape dominates power in the other shapes.
