Having been assured that sulfur dioxide was bad for us, we spent billions of dollars eliminating it from coal and oil-burning emissions and building sulfur-capture technology. Now, it turns out that sulfur dioxide is good for us, and we need to spend even more untold billions to inject it into the atmosphere.

The funds include $3 million for every state, $1 million for each of the 67 most populated metropolitan areas and a total of $25 million to be distributed among Native American tribes, according to the EPA press release. The grants are among the first in President Joe Biden’s new $5 billion Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) program, which was created by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). In total, the IRA allocated nearly $370 billion to fighting climate change. The act also includes, among other things, $80 million in additional funding for the Internal Revenue Service, $2o billion in incentives for farmers to not grow crops and $2.2 billion in reparations for black farmers. “We know that tackling the climate crisis demands a sense of urgency to protect people and the planet,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan in a statement.

On Tuesday, Supreme Court justices heard arguments in two cases related to Biden’s student loan forgiveness program. […] Justice Clarence Thomas questioned how a waiver or modification could amount to a cancellation of student loans, to which Prelogar stated that the HEROES Act, put in place after 9/11, offers the education secretary actions that could be taken during a national emergency. Chief Justice John Roberts questioned the half-a-trillion-dollar price tag for the program, asking “how does that fit under the normal understanding of modify?” Prelogar argued that the HEROES Act, while it doesn’t explicitly state that a cancellation could occur, states that the secretary of education has the power to “waive or modify” a federal student loan program in order to ensure that individuals “are not placed in a worse position financially” because of “a war or other military operation or national emergency.”

She argued that in the context of the statute, “modify has to mean making a change up to the point of wholesale elimination.”

AP: Taiwan says 25 Chinese planes, 3 ships sent toward island

The ministry said 19 of those planes crossed into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone while the ships were continuing to operate in the Taiwan Strait. It said Taiwan responded by scrambling fighters, dispatching ships and activating coastal missile defense systems to “closely monitor and respond.” China stages such incursions on a near-daily basis, part of what are termed “gray zone” tactics, aimed at intimidation and wearing down Taiwan’s equipment, exhausting its personnel and degrading public morale. Those also include cyberwarfare and disinformation campaigns, along with a relentless drive to deprive Taiwan of diplomatic allies. The premise is that in a pandemic or other worldwide disease emergency, Americans should not get better or faster health care than inhabitants of third-world countries. If Biden rams this through, Americans will suffer and die needlessly. Under the draft treaty, presented in Geneva on Feb. 1, the U.S. will be obligated to hand over a whopping 20% of its medical supplies, including diagnostic tests, antiviral medications and vaccines, to WHO for global distribution. Article 10 of the treaty specifies this will be done in “real-time,” not after American needs are met. The U.S. will no longer be able to rush treatments and vaccines to its own citizens, prioritizing them before sending aid to other countries. […] Worse, the treaty suspends patent protection for new vaccines and treatments whenever the WHO declares a pandemic. Drug companies will put the brakes on investing billions developing future antivirals and vaccines under such a threat. The treaty deplores “intellectual property” as a barrier to . . . […] WHO already collects sizable sums of money from the U.S. but unfortunately takes its orders from China. WHO’s subservience to China makes the treaty especially perilous.

In a 2021 report from the Daily Caller News Foundation, before Su was confirmed to her current position, it was revealed that Su failed to enforce California law aimed at preventing pedophilia in Hollywood. Su, during her time as California labor commissioner from 2011 to 2018, led an agency tasked with enforcing labor laws in the state including the Hollywood Child Protection Act, signed into law by then-Governor Jerry Brown in 2012 after a series of pedophile cases in the film industry.

Until you sit down and read it, it’s hard to believe how absolutely insane the city of San Francisco’s Reparations Advisory Committee’s recently released reparations plan is. But this is San Francisco. Just because a policy is completely insane doesn’t mean it won’t be enacted—at least in some form. Nor does it mean it is not a harbinger of America’s future. In fact, the recent San Francisco reparations plan has implications far beyond the current explicit claims being put forth by African Americans and the Left. Most who have attacked it have missed or misunderstood its most important aspect. The plan is the opening salvo in a broader campaign by the Left to justify and enable the economic and political dispossession of white Americans. Adding a note of grim comedy to the situation, the original meeting by the SF Board of Supervisors earlier this month to discuss the draft reparations plan was postponed after its principal sponsor was delayed getting back from his wild birthday bash at a Hooters in Medellin, Colombia. Absurdities like missing your own reparations grift show because you were partying hard in Colombia are why the Right loves to mock San Francisco, but pretending that what happens in San Francisco stays in San Francisco is pure wishcasting. San Francisco and the greater Bay Area have enormous cultural, financial, and technological clout in our current era, clout which has been scarcely diminished by the city’s utter dysfunction. For decades now Bay Area movements that once seemed incredibly marginal eventually entered and then became the mainstream.

A conflict over what it means to be Christian is forcing a school in Kansas City, Missouri, to close. Urban Christian Academy is a private, K-8 school with an enrollment of 100 that describes itself as providing “a tuition-free, high-quality, Christ-centered education for low-income students.” The school’s mission statement has always stressed inclusivity in general terms, noting that following Jesus “opens up doors and makes room at the table.” But last year it added a paragraph to its website, which read in part, “We are an affirming school. We stand with the LGBTQIA+ community and believe in their holiness. We celebrate the diversity of God’s creation in all its varied and beautiful forms.” According to the school, that update prompted donors to stop contributing, many of them citing their interpretation of Christianity as the reason. Now, UCA has announced it will close at the end of the school year due to the loss of financial support. […] We had an 80% loss in funding and that was too much to overcome.”

Recently, Fox News CEO Rupert Murdoch gave a deposition as part of a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit filed against the network by Dominion Voting Systems. So the extent to which Fox is a threat is debatable at times. Charlie Sykes at The Bulwark wrote a piece about the issue and included part of a conversation he had last week with former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. Ryan also sits on the board of Fox News. Cina: Florida Republican proposes new bill to ‘cancel’ state’s Democratic Party

Florida state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia filed SB 1248, an act that would cancel the state’s Democratic Party. The so-called “Ultimate Cancel Act” would direct the Florida Division of Elections to “immediately cancel the filings of a political party, to include its registration and approved status as a political party, if the party’s platform has previously advocated for, or been in support of, slavery or involuntary servitude.” The Democrat Party, the predominant political entity in Florida before 1990, advocated for slavery prior to 1865 and seceded from the Union in 1861. It is the only party recognized by the Florida Division of Elections that would be impacted by this law.
