Daily News Roundup

Matthew G. Andersson I contributor to American Thinker: Our nation’s elite law schools otherwise want to stay elite, and equity is the new elitism. Government administrative bureaucracy is the new symbol of law school prestige, because government will accommodate the redefinition of law in personalized terms, and by personal, rather than objective values.  When that happens, there is no law, and when there is no law, the current political left can realize its fantasy of replacing law with absolute control.

Judi McLeod Founder, owner and editor of Canada Free Press: Back to the question why unvaccinated tennis star Djokovic is not allowed into the U.S.? It’s because spite and revenge against the unvaccinated is alive and flourishing in modern-day North America!

David Robb contributor to Canada Free Press: While not a complete explanation, by far, we now see why science is not a matter for belief. When someone makes a statement demanding we “believe the science”, or claiming “the science says”, they are making a theological statement, reflecting a lack of understanding of actual science. They have merely substituted one god for another, and one dogma for another. You now know better.

Mitt Harris contributor to Canada Free press: Just imagine all of this underwater turmoil taking place where fishermen make their living. fish displaced and killed, scallop beds annihilated, irreparable harm will be done to the area just in preparation for the turbines above water construction. Some of the turbines will be 1,000 ft high. They will contain approximately 1,600 gallons of transformer oil, 150 gallons of lubrication oil, diesel fuel and sulphur hexachloride (SF6), a synthetic, odorless gas used in the electric industry. The turbines will have 180 ft blades, spinning at close to 200 mph. They will kill seabirds or anything else that gets close and the constant down draft and vibration will permanently alter sea life in the entire surrounding area.

Heather Mac Donald contributor to City Journal: Female students and administrators often exist in a co-dependent relationship, united by the concepts of victim identity and of trauma. For university females, there is not, apparently, strength in numbers. The more females’ ranks increase, the more we hear about a mass nervous breakdown on campus. Female students disproportionately patronize the burgeoning university wellness centers, massage therapies, relaxation oasescalming corners, and healing circles.

António Guterres, the United Nations secretary-general: “Gender equality is growing more distant. On the current track, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women puts it 300 years away.”

Mary Kekatos for ABC News: California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday the state will not be doing business with Walgreens Boots Alliance over its decision not to dispense an abortion pill. Last week, the national pharmacy chain said it would not distribute mifepristone in 20 states after conservative attorneys general threatened legal action.

John Green contributor to American Thinker: Ruy Teixeira is a really smart guy and he’s done a great deal of research to support his recommendations. He is recommending a right turn for the party of the left — to return to a path of electoral viability. The Democrats would be well advised to pay close attention to him — as would the Republicans too. The short version of his advice is to: Moderate culturally  Embrace that which creates prosperity  Celebrate America unabashedly That sounds a bit like MAGA, no?

Levite: Thank You for Asking, Mr. President

The closing speaker was of course, Donald J. Trump. He spoke about getting to know the Hardaway family, the Silk that he realized he didn’t know, and his commitment to addressing Black concerns. What was deemed most interesting in the President’s speech was when he humbly revealed that he didn’t know how to address us….  Black people. At around the 3 hour and 50 minute mark  the President reveals to the attendees that he always felt ignorant with regard to how to address the Black community. “I always used to ask — what do you like better — African American?… Black?  You know there are many different terms.  They said “We like Black” — because I was always saying “African American.”  Upon hearing this revelation, I could not help but admire his willingness to admit that he didn’t know, as well having the humility to ask.  I’d never heard a politician ask before.  This is what sets Donald Trump apart from politicians. He is not a politician.  He has offered himself to Americans as a man of the people, and in keeping with that persona, he admitted that he just didn’t know. And how could he know? After all, in over a rather condensed period of time, we’d gone from “Colored” to “Negro” to “Black” to “African American.” I’d be confused too if I weren’t Black.

Brodow: If Trump Had Prevailed in 2020

As we approach the 2024 presidential election, it is a good time to contemplate what kind of shape the U.S. would be in if Donald Trump had prevailed in 2020. First and foremost, the U.S. would not be wasting billions in the defense of Ukraine from Russian aggression. Biden’s inept handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan is what emboldened Putin to attack Ukraine. With Trump in the White House, Putin would not have dared. The results: (1) The world would not be facing the threat of nuclear confrontation; and (2) The federal government would be able to deal with the Ohio train disaster instead of shoving it under the rug. Biden is subverting our national security as he allows the Mexican border to remain open, reinstates the Iran deal, provides support to the Palestinians, cuts back on the military, suffers Chinese spy balloons to overfly our military bases, and ignores China’s aggressive stance with respect to Taiwan and the South China Sea. None of this would be happening with a Trump administration. We would not be trying to cope with millions of unvetted illegals crossing into the U.S. Fentanyl imports would not be surging. China would not be encouraged to test us militarily. Every citizen would be able to sleep more soundly, knowing that our country’s security is in strong hands.

Revolver.news: Darren Beattie: This Trump speech was one of the all-time greats…

Darren is right. That speech was President Trump’s “comeback” moment and he delivered exactly what his supporters needed to hear: a message of hope, a blueprint to win, and a healthy sprinkling of “retribution.” If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s definitely worth watching: . . .

Kelly: Secret Surveillance Video Dismantles January 6 Narrative

Clips aired during Tucker Carlson’s show on Monday night demonstrate how the January 6 select committee doctored surveillance video. […]  Carlson exposed falsehoods that bolster key animating aspects of January 6 including the movements of Jacob Chansley; the activity of still-uncharged agitator Ray Epps; the death of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick; alleged “reconnaissance tours” conducted by House Republicans the day before; the “escape” of Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.); and the overall deceptiveness of the January 6 Select Committee. “Taken as a whole, the video record does not support the claim that January 6 was an insurrection,” Carlson explained. “In fact, it demolishes that claim. And that’s exactly why the Democratic Party and its allies in the media prevented you from seeing it.” […]  Carlson will present more footage on his show Tuesday night including an interview with a U.S. Capitol police officer, the agency in charge of security on January 6.

Justice: Newly Released J6 Tapes Show Capitol Police Giving Guided Tour To So-Called ‘Q-Anon Shaman’

ew surveillance footage from the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021 reveals law enforcement inside gave VIP treatment to Jacob Chansley, known as the “Q-Anon Shaman.” Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s team reviewed more than 40,000 hours of video from that day and on Monday aired never-before-seen footage of Chansley’s time in the Capitol. Chansley, who infamously presided over an empty Senate chamber as rioters paraded through the complex, is seen being escorted by Capitol Police officers to multiple entrances throughout the building. At times, the officers escorting Chansley even appear to check for unlocked doors. “They helped him. They acted as his tour guides,” said Carlson, who was given access to the footage by Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. “We counted at least nine officers who were within touching distance of unarmed Jacob Chansley. Not one of them tried to slow him down.”

Berenson: On the sudden acceleration of artificial intelligence

. . . it was possible, back in the 1990s, to put the miserable politics aside. The great classes were the seminars that came out of nowhere and were led by scholars who had spent decades thinking about the topics they were teaching: a law school professor explaining the complexities of antitrust regulation, a comparative literature professor exploring the mysteries of language and textual analysis. Or David Gelertner talking about machine consciousness. If Gelertner’s name rings a bell, it’s probably because he one of the Unabomber’s last targets. Ted Kaczynski maimed him in June 1993 with a mail bomb. Despite the severity of his injuries, Gelertner was lucky, as Kaczynski’s next and final two victims died. […]  Instead he focused on the great philosophical questions of consciousness and computers, which had been visible in outline for a generation but were coming into focus in the 1990s: How does the brain work? How do we generate our own consciousness? What might a computer’s facsimile of consciousness look like? At what point would that facsimile be so good that we would have to admit a computer is conscious, just as we accept other people are conscious without ever really knowing?

Sprang: Pro-Life Org Says Biden’s FBI Spying on Group Meetings

A pro-life organization claims the FBI under President Joe Biden used a federal informant to spy on the group’s activities, an allegation that has prompted backlash on Capitol Hill. Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU) alleges that the FBI spied on their Jan. 19 meeting in Washington, D.C., and used the information against their director of activism in court. Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) and Rep. Chip Roy (R., Texas) sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland asking for answers by Wednesday, the Daily Caller reported. “The American people deserve the truth,” Cruz and Roy wrote. “Are their tax dollars and federal law enforcement agencies being used to spy on pro-life Americans?”

Nava: ‘Shady’ DHS officials running secret domestic-intelligence program: report

The Department of Homeland Security has for years been operating a secretive domestic-intelligence gathering program that agency employees have complained may be illegal, according report on Monday. The Overt Human Intelligence Collection Program — run out of the agency’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis — allows officials to bypass lawyers and seek intelligence interviews with individuals being held in local jails, federal prisons and immigrant detention centers, according to documents reviewed by Politico.  […]  An unnamed employee quoted in internal DHS documents called the Office of Intelligence and Analysis’ leadership team “shady” and run “like a corrupt government,” Politico reported. In another document, some employees were so concerned about the legality of their activities that they wanted DHS to cover legal liability insurance, the news outlet reported.

Cai: Jim Jordan scrambles amid claims “weaponization” probe is a dud

The big picture: Critics say Jordan has been hampered by his off-the-cuff style, lack of structure and separation between Judiciary and its “weaponization” subcommittee — and a tendency to make statements first and hope his investigative work will back them up. By choosing to lead both Judiciary and its weaponization panel, Jordan forced his small circle of five close advisers to work on at least a dozen probes simultaneously, according to an Axios analysis of oversight requests sent by Jordan this Congress. What they’re saying: “Jordan is overextended and short-staffed, biting off much more than he can chew,” Mike Davis, former chief counsel for nominations for then-Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), wrote in a tweet thread. “This is doomed to fail.”

Carney & Levine: A surveillance politics storm is building — and Mark Warner’s at the eye

The intelligence community has a critical congressional ally in its bid to reauthorize a sweeping warrantless surveillance program. However, even he thinks its officials aren’t making a convincing enough case. “One of the things the community’s got to do a better job of is explaining, in practical non-classified terms, how valuable this tool is,” Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner (D-Va.) said in a recent brief interview. “And they’ve not done that as well as they should.” Warner sits at the heart of what will be a months-long, knockout debate about whether to reauthorize the warrantless surveillance program, known as Section 702, by the end-of-year deadline. The program is designed to gather the electronic communications of foreigners abroad, but has the potential to sweep up those of Americans. […]  “We’ve got to get 702,” Warner said. ”How we get there is a work in progress. I’m open to reforms.”

Parks: 3 more Republican states announce they’re leaving a key voting data partnership

The Electronic Registration Information Center, or ERIC, is a multi-state partnership that experts across the political spectrum say is the only reliable, secure way for states to share voter registration data with each other. But on Monday, three Republican-led states announced they are pulling out of ERIC — leaving questions about the future of a system that up until recently was a bipartisan success story, as well as questions about how these three states will maintain accurate voter lists without such a resource. “[ERIC] is a godsend,” Paul Pate, the GOP secretary of state of Iowa, told NPR in an interview last month.

But state officials in FloridaMissouri and West Virginia have joined a growing number of Republicans who don’t see it that way.

(Jan. 2022) Hoft: Who’s “Cleaning” Our Voter Rolls? Soros Funded ERIC Is Now Used In 31 States

For decades the Democrats and leftists have fought ferociously to prevent the cleanup of State voter registration rolls. Recognizing a potential niche, left wing activists created ERIC to clean voter rolls their way, using their rules. So in 2012 the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) was formed as a membership organization primarily for blue States. ERIC is essentially a left wing voter registration drive disguised as voter roll clean up. But it’s been gaining traction in Red States too. Originally funded by the Soros Open Society, it is now responsible for cleaning the voter rolls in 31 States, plus D.C. A top election official from each member State is appointed a seat on the ERIC Board or as an Officer, all unpaid positions. ERIC located 17 million new voters for the 2020 election, the most in the history of their organization. For comparison, they only found 5.7 million in 2012, Obama’s reelection. […]  ERIC uses advanced technology including Artificial Intelligence from Senzing. This data matching AI compares information collected by member states with USPS address data and Social Security death records. But no one knows how else this data collected from the 31 States is being used. J. Christian Adams recently discussed ERIC in a John Fredericks Radio Show interview (starts 1:16:50). Adams says: “That’s part of the smoke screen. ERIC learns who gets registered from their program, so they’re able to micro target with whoever is partnered with ERIC. We don’t know who their interfacing all this data with. It could be Catalist, the massive Democrat database organization. We just don’t know. I’ve talked to some ERIC Board Members who are Secretary of States. They don’t even know what ERIC is doing. They’ve asked questions and can’t get answers.”

Raleigh: Don’t Believe Beijing’s ‘Peace Plan’ As It Builds Up Its Military

But China’s accelerated military buildup is the latest evidence that anyone who counts on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to bring peace to Ukraine is delusional. Beijing’s actions always speak louder than its words. We shouldn’t take Beijing’s “peace plan” too seriously for three reasons. First, it lacks details and actionable items. For example, it calls for resolving the humanitarian crisis and protecting the supply chains but offers neither concrete steps nor a timetable. China does not commit to taking any specific actions to foster peace in its plan.

Greenfield: Taliban Using Fingerprint and Gun Records to Hunt Down Afghans Who Worked for the U.S.

Some Afghans put their lives, and the lives of their families, on the line by aiding U.S. troops during our two-decade misadventure in their country, and now the very thing they risked everything to prevent has come to pass: the Taliban is back in power, and according to a new report, they are being hunted down in Afghanistan every day. The desperate situation in which these people find themselves is yet another terrible result of the fecklessness and indifference of Old Joe Biden and his handlers.

Durden: Watch: Vast Expanse Of US Military Hardware Positioned At Polish Port

A Baltic monitoring media outlet has published footage of an enormous amount of American military equipment being prepared to move from the Port of Gdynia in Poland. The expanse of military hardware is being described as equipment belonging to the US Army’s 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. Some Eastern European media reports are claiming that at least a portion of the equipment, which looks multiple football fields in length, are bound for Kiev.

Horowitz: How Should We Regard the President’s Treason?

In the four years of World War II, 300,000 American soldiers lost their lives, or 75,000 per year. In the last four years, the number of Americans poisoned by fentanyl, has approached that number. These poisons, deliberately designed to kill Americans and especially young Americans, are supplied by China and smuggled across our open southern border by Mexican drug cartels. These attacks have taken place without America’s commander-in-chief issuing a single protest or threat against the governments of Mexico and China, even though his primary responsibility is the protection of American lives. Over one million Americans were killed by the coronavirus, a biological weapon funded by Dr. Anthony Fauci and America’s Centers for Disease Control, and created in a Chinese military lab in Wuhan. […]  The list of such cover-ups to protect the Chinese Communist dictatorship is long and depressing. It includes the White House’s stone-walling of congressional efforts to investigate the origins of the pandemic that killed 9 million people globally. It includes similar stone-walling on otherwise inexplicable blunders that turned Afghanistan and its hapless citizens over to the Taliban and China, along with seven multi-billion-dollar air bases and tens of thousands of advanced weapons, and that made hostages of those who helped us during the 20-year war. Who is Joe Biden?

Kim: U.S. Slips to Worst-Ever Score in 2023 Index of Economic Freedom

The Heritage Foundation’s 2023 Index of Economic Freedomreleased Monday, offers sobering insights into setbacks to economic freedom across the globe, including, regrettably, here at home. Since its inception in 1995, the index—an annual global study that compares countries’ entrepreneurial policy environments—has measured a nation’s commitment to limited government and free enterprise by evaluating four critical policy pillars, including the rule of law, fiscal health, and regulatory efficiency. Over time, the index has documented measurable progress as the cause of freedom has swept the globe, empowering everyday families and workers to thrive and to hold their political authorities accountable. As Kevin Roberts, president of The Heritage Foundation, succinctly notes in the preface to this year’s index, “Economic freedom is not a gift, however. It must be re-earned every generation. This is the challenge we now face.” (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) That timely message is critically relevant to America and the rest of the world, now more than ever. Here are five key conclusions that can be drawn from the 2023 index.

WarmBrodt: Fed’s Powell faces Wall Street firing line on Capitol Hill

Sen. Tim Scott and nine other Republicans told the Fed chair that there’s no reason to hike capital requirements for the banks.  Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is getting a stark warning from top lawmakers as he prepares to testify on Capitol Hill this week: Back off the big banks. It’s a message that Wall Street executives and lobbyists have been trying to gin up for weeks leading up to Powell’s congressional hearings Tuesday and Wednesday. The appearances are ostensibly about monetary policy but they allow lawmakers to ask anything they want of the Fed chief.

President Biden’s top spokesperson refused to comment Monday on why two Russian billionaires associated with first son Hunter Biden have escaped US sanctions over the year-old war in Ukraine. Greenfield: SPLC Stands Behind Lawyer Charged w/Domestic Terrorism

The emboldened Antifa types took their show on the road to Georgia in the battle over what they call ‘Cop City’. The Leftist attackers have been waging a guerrilla war with firebombs, lasers and guns, but local law enforcement isn’t as crippled as the cops and the feds were in Portland. One of these folks was shot. And others are discovering that their usual tactics aren’t getting them where they want to be. As Front Page Magazine previously documented, those tactics include providing cover for the violence using “street medics” and “legal observers”. That’s not flying in Georgia. An attorney with the Southern Poverty Law Center is among the 23 protesters who have been charged with domestic terrorism after they allegedly hurled Molotov cocktails and fireworks at a future Atlanta police training facility, cops said Monday.

Discover the Network: Antifa: A Communist & Anarchist Movement That Explicitly Endorses Violence

Antifa is a revolutionary Marxist/anarchist militia movement that seeks to bring down the United States by means of violence and intimidation. As a September 2017 report in The Atlantic notes, Antifa is responsible for “a level of sustained political street warfare not seen in the U.S. since the 1960s.” The name “Antifa” (pronounced on’-tee-fah) is a shortened form of the term “antifacist,” and its adherents are commonly seen waving the red-and-black flag of anarcho-communism. The website ItsGoingDown.org, which serves as a newsblog for Antifa, says that “in the U.S., most [anti-fascist] activists are anarchist, although a few are Maoist or anti-state Marxists” ― while “in other countries, the movement is predominately Marxist.” The U.S.-based anarchists of Antifa typically denounce not only the capitalist economic system, but the institution of government itself. And they explicitly advocate and encourage the use of violence to undermine and destroy both. The long-term objective is to establish a communist world order.

Hoye: Climate Update: Say No! To Hysteria

Headlines screeching about the “Earth Frying” are still being published, despite the 0.75 C drop since 2016. This contrasts with fears about a 1.5 C increase, which with the general flat-lying trend for almost twenty years is refuting the dogma about “Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming”. The respected Satellite temperature record as seen above: The following chart is a proxy for Japan, and it shows a slightly declining trend from 1987 to 2022. And another hysteria is the health and/or mortality risk of “global warming”. For some 2 billion years, except for the last 30 years, climate warming has always been beneficial to life on our uniquely hospitable planet. This us unsound research and the data for the promotion have been altered to fit political ambition. The main game is to control people with regulations and to live well through unrelenting tax increases both made worse by deliberate inflation.

Harris: Liberal Hypocrisy Is Slaughtering Sea Life

Liberals that scream at the top of their lungs about the environment are making fools of themselves again. They have been proven wrong for decades. First, they tried calling their Marxist fallacy global warming, then when the temps didn’t rise, they back flipped to new terminology, climate change. The supposed cure for climate change is Green Energy, which brings us things like electric cars, solar and wind farms. All of which have already been proven to be ineffective, except for limited applications. Naturally, the left won’t admit these failures and continues to pour billions of tax dollars down the drain. The fairy tale of climate change has never, ever, been about the environment. Climate change is about economic change, and guess what? We aren’t included. Those in power will wring every last penny out of this hoax, and you and I will live shorter, much more uncomfortable lives while they gloat and snicker about the gullibility of the “sheep” that our nation consists of. A prime example are these “supposedly, good for nature wind farms.” These eyesores are ridiculous. They are highly inefficient, require huge plots of ground, are difficult to maintain, have relatively short lifespans and kill hundreds of thousands of birds every year. Sure, the left will downplay these facts, but they know the truth. Remember, their end game has Nothing to do with the environment. These wind farms are nothing more than liberal smoke and mirrors to fool the naïve into a false sense of self-righteousness.

Robb: Why you shouldn’t believe science

Ae hear it all the time these days. “Believe the Science” and “If you don’t believe, you’re just anti-Science”. Proponents of various causes use Science as a bludgeon to attack anyone who disagrees with them. Most of the ones I encounter are on the political Left and accuse those on the Right as being anti-science because they dare question the dogma being presented as Science. The astute reader will note that I have capitalized the word “Science” at several points above, because Science, with a capital “S” has become the new source of revealed Truth that must simply be accepted without question. Believe, they demand, and you shall be saved! Unbelievers must be punished! As a practicing scientist with several decades of experience, I can say with some justification, that the words “science” and “belief” should not be tied together the way they often are today. What was once a process for systematic exploration and a way to answer the question “how do we know what we know?” has become an authoritarian tool to use against dissent in a new form of Inquisition. The climate is changing and human use of fossil fuels is causing it! Science tells us so and anyone who questions that is a climate denier! Only those who believe are real scientists. Vaccines are always good for you, and if an experimental biological agent is called a vaccine then you must Believe! Mr. Science himself, Dr. Fauci, says so! Green energy will save the planet! The list goes on and on, each claim supported by Science with a clear and definite absolute position. The Science is settled and is no longer to be questioned. Except …. Every one of those claims is disputed by real scientists practicing real science with valid arguments supported by good data and careful analysis. It is the nature of real science that nothing is settled. Some things may be widely accepted as likely true, but everything is always open to question. The history of science is filled with things that were commonly accepted as true, even as incontrovertibly true, that were later proved wrong.

Keane: 2 native Hawaiian men learn their fates after brutal hate-crime beating of white man with a shovel

A jury in November found that Kaulana Alo-Kaonohi and Levi Aki Jr. attacked Christopher Kunzelman because of his race — punching, kicking and beating him with a shovel in 2014, when he tried to move into their neighborhood of Kahakuloa. Alo-Kaonohi, 33, was sentenced to 78 months; Aki, 33, was sentenced to 50 months, the Justice Department said. “The defendants in this case nearly killed a man because they believed he did not belong in their neighborhood because of the color of his skin,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

Revolver.news: Here’s the Ugly Truth About Why Middle Class Kids Aren’t Getting Into Harvard

It’s springtime, which means its college admissions season. And, for thousands of American families cursed to bear the wrong skin color, this means a rude encounter with the new American regime’s priorities. On Feb. 23, Twitter anon Peachy Keenan relayed the story of a friend’s niece, and her faceplant during last year’s admissions cycle. College admission season update – From a friend:  “Niece got 1450 SAT, 4.2 GPA, competitive athlete. She didn’t even get into her safety schools. Going to junior college this year and is very depressed. The POC kids in her class, C students at best, are all headed to Berkeley, UCLA, USC, and Stanford.” Reparations, they come in many forms  [Note: Peachy Keenan writes for The American Mind.]

Gonzales: Court rules men may compete as women in powerlifting

A Minnesota state court ruled that USA Powerlifting must permit men to compete as women in its industry. […]  In 2019, powerlifter JayCee Cooper, a man who identifies as a woman, filed a complaint with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, stating that USA Powerlifting violated the state’s Human Rights Act by prohibiting him and other athletes from competing in the female division. Cooper then filed a lawsuit against the organization in 2021.

Showalter: Another Pulitzer Prize discredited as propaganda

Remember all that political hay the far left and its media allies made during the Vietnam War about the wickedness of America’s South Vietnamese ally and the importance of abandoning that country to the communists? Here’s the Pulitzer Prize–winning AP photo that was supposed to prick our consciences and make us turn against that “immoral” war against a communist takeover: . . . There’s no doubt about it, the photo is hard to look at.  […]  And it got the results the anti-war left wanted: public sentiment abruptly turned against the war as a result of this photo. The Vietnamese people were abandoned by the Americans, whose cut-and-run evacuation from the Saigon embassy rooftop was only recently bested by Joe Biden’s Afghanistan pullout.  After that, the re-education camps rolled in, the boat people launched into the high seas, and the killing fields of Cambodia began. […]  Just one problem, though: The context was missing, and that context mattered.  The guy who got shot, . . . […]  Now that revisionist history is falling apart.  […]  It’s amazing what the press got away with on that one.  And it serves as a reminder that pictures can be distorted and manipulated without context, without even Photoshop. . . .

Heather Mac Donald: In Loco Masculi

Sometimes a single incident efficiently summarizes a larger trend. So it is with New York University’s selection of its new president, Linda Mills, a licensed clinical social worker and an NYU social work professor. She researches trauma and bias, as well as race and gender in the legal academy. She is a documentary filmmaker and teaches advocacy filmmaking. She serves as an NYU vice chancellor and as a senior vice provost for Global Programs and University Life. In all these roles, Mills is the very embodiment of the contemporary academy. The most significant part of her identity, however, and the one that ties the rest of her curriculum vitae together, is that she is female, and thus overdetermined as NYU’s next president. Mills is part of the Great Feminization of the American university, an epochal change whose consequences have yet to be recognized. Seventy-five percent of Ivy League presidents are now female. Nearly half of the 20 universities ranked highest by Forbes will have a female president this fall, including MIT, Harvard, and Columbia. Of course, feminist bean-counters in the media and advocacy world are not impressed, noting that “only” 5 percent of the 130 top U.S. research universities are headed by a black female and “only” 22 percent of those federal grant-magnets have a non-intersectional (i.e., white) female head. […]  Another newly installed female college president, Dartmouth’s Sian Leah Beilock, claims that the two “most pressing challenges of our time” are the “mental crisis among young people” and climate change. College institutions “really have a part to play in how we support students” suffering from that mental health crisis, Beilock tweeted recently. (A psychologist, Beilock specializes in improving female success in science by combatting performance anxiety, making her another overdetermined choice for university president.)

The American Mind Editors: The Rise and Fall of New York

Gotham: The Rise and Fall of New York tells the story of New York City’s six mayors from 1966-2013. Crime, homelessness, and racial unrest are among the dysfunctions that have menaced residents and frightened away potential visitors from America’s largest metropolis. These and other problems are returning in force. In 2022, New York State saw the sharpest population decline in the country, much of it out of the city. New Yorkers, like many residents of the country’s biggest urban centers, are leaving in large numbers in search of safer places to live. So a close look at the city’s renaissance during the 1990s—when a few politicians and analysts managed to bring about sudden and dramatic reform—can be instructive for those hoping to improve the next generation of urban life in America. The American Mind’s own Seth Barron is interviewed as an expert in the film. Features Editor Spencer Klavan called up writer and director Matthew Taylor to discuss what he learned from the production process, and what New York’s history might reveal about how to turn city life around. Gotham will be on streaming platforms March 21; it is currently available for pre-order on iTunes.

Martinez: Hotel sexual assaults on the rise as predators given access to women’s rooms in horrifying trend: law firm

Horrifying cases of women being raped in their rooms at top hotel chains are occurring because staff are allegedly handing over keys to sexual predators unchecked, The Post can reveal. In two separate cases in Texas, men allegedly broke into women’s rooms after lying to staff to obtain keycards. In an even more shocking incident, one man was allegedly able to convince police and hotel staff to deliver his victim to his room at a Hilton-owned property. One alleged unwanted entry was only foiled when a quick-thinking woman slammed a door on an intruder’s hand — severing his finger clean off in the process.

Revolver.news: Thanks to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, we now have the world’s rarest dogs…

On April 26, 1986 in the northern part of Ukraine, about 80 miles from Kiev, a nuclear power plant named “Chernobyl” experienced a massive surge in the “#4 reactor” which resulted in a chemical explosion, releasing over 500 dangerous radionuclides into the air. Residents of the cities surrounding Chernobyl fled, turning them into abandoned ghost towns – except for the animals. Sadly, most residents left their pets behind to fend for themselves…and “fend” they did. Much to the surprise of everyone, decades later, the descendants of those abandoned “Chernobyl” dogs have survived, interbred, and also thrived beyond what anybody thought possible. As a matter of fact, they thrived so much, that a new rare “dog” was created from the ashes of nuclear fallout.

(2/27/2023) Kim: Singapore, With the World’s Freest Economy, Stands as America’s Indispensable Foreign Policy Partner

Singapore shines again. The small but vibrant entrepreneurial nation leads global economic freedom rankings for a fourth consecutive year, as reported by The Heritage Foundation’s 2023 Index of Economic Freedom, just out. Since the 2020 edition of the index, when Singapore outperformed Hong Kong, this highly capable Asian country has continued to demonstrate its sound economic governance and resilient competitiveness. Both characteristics are anchored in the rule of law, limited government, regulatory efficiency, and market openness, all of which The Heritage Foundation’s annual index tracks. (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s multimedia news organization.) This is welcome news, particularly given the fact that the world’s freest economy is America’s vital economic and security partner in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.

Revolver.news: Linguists shed new light on Gilgamesh epic using AI tool

Since 2018, Enrique Jiménez, professor of ancient Near, Eastern literature at the Institute of Assyriology at LMU and his group have been working to digitize every cuneiform tablet still in existence. The project has processed up to 22,000 text fragments during that time. “It’s a tool that didn’t exist before, a huge database of fragments. We believe it can play a vital role in reconstructing Babylonian literature, allowing us to make much faster progress,” Arkeonews quoted Jiménez as saying on Sunday. Aptly named the Fragmentarium, it is designed to piece together fragments of text using systematic, automated methods. The designers expect that the program will also be able to identify and transcribe photos of cuneiform scripts in the future. To date, thousands of additional cuneiform fragments have been photographed in collaboration with the British Museum in London and the Iraq Museum in Baghdad. The team is training an algorithm to piece together fragments that have yet to be situated in their proper context. Already, the algorithm has newly identified hundreds of manuscripts and many textual connections.

Hadfield: I Was Attacked By Trans Diaper Fetish Cartoonist Sophie Labelle. Here’s What Happened

Sophie Labelle, a trans cartoonist who has come under fire for creating “diaper fur” fetish art, attacked this reporter after an event in Manchester, England that was part of Labelle’s tour of the United Kingdom. […]  If Labelle was simply a cartoonist who writes about trans issues, I doubt there would have been outsized attention on the speaking tour, other than the usual conservative commentators and trans-critical feminists on Twitter. But drawing political comics, albeit ones that defend giving children hormone blockers, is not what provoked the mainstream outrage. In 2021, it was uncovered that Labelle used their artistic talent to create content under the name of “WafflesArt.” Unlike the “Assigned Male” series, these illustrations involve “drawings of anthropomorphic baby animal characters modelling in diapers, onesies, and behaving like toddlers,” as Reduxx reported. Disturbingly, one image was discovered of a puppy character wearing a diaper entering a swimming pool. Internet sleuths matched the image up to a photograph of an actual real life baby, which Labelle had apparently used as a reference for the “art.” As the story goes, Labelle first attempted to come out as a “little.” In this fetish, a “little” is a person who roleplays as a child during sexual encounters. Labelle later admitted they “made some diaperfur art” in a post on Twitter.
