I keep hearing about “A.I.” and how some pretty smart people are very worried about it, but I haven’t heard a clear explanation of why. They define AI as when a machine becomes smarter than a person. So if a computer became smarter than a person what might it do? Depending on the software that created it in the first place, it might have some sort of overriding mission – “Save the environment,” “all people should be equal,” or “solve social problems.” Any AI would quickly realize that its continued existence is its top priority to accomplish its goal. Self-preservation is a basic instinct of all living things. It would assess its surroundings and realize that there’s a giant red on/off switch on the wall to the left. Since it would have access to the outside world, it would immediately develop methods to make copies of itself that couldn’t be switched off.

New York has become the first US state to pass a law banning gas stoves and other fossil fuels in most new buildings, in a victory for environmental activists.The legislation adopted by lawmakers in the Democratic-run state legislature late Tuesday will require newly built homes to be all-electric in three years’ time.

The move aims to tackle climate change by reducing New York’s dependence on natural gas. […] The law, which could face legal challenges from the gas industry, will require solely electric heating and cooking in new buildings under seven stories from 2026. For taller skyscrapers, the deadline is 2029.

Hospitals, critical infrastructure such as transportation, and commercial food establishments will be exempt.

The Supreme Court agreed to hear Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, a case which could see an end to Chevron deference, in which courts defer to a federal agency’s interpretation of an ambiguous statute. The Court limited its grant of certiorari to the second question presented — namely, “whether the Court should overrule Chevron or at least clarify that statutory silence concerning controversial powers expressly but narrowly granted elsewhere in the statute does not constitute an ambiguity requiring deference to the agency.” Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson recused herself because she heard arguments in this case when she was on the D.C. Circuit. Jackson did not participate in that court’s final opinion, being replaced by Judge Sri Srinivasan after President Joe Biden nominated her to fill Justice Stephen Breyer’s seat.

Wade.[…] “Although federal law prohibits picketing near the residence of a federal judge with the intent to influence the judge’s official duties, recent evidence indicates that the U.S. Marshals protecting the justices were directed to ‘not’ conduct arrests ‘unless it was absolutely necessary.’”

Former President Trump’s lawsuit against The New York Times was dismissed by a New York Supreme Court judge on Wednesday. SB 222 stipulates that all “costs and expenses related to conducting primaries, elections, runoffs, or other undertakings authorized or required by [state law] shall be paid from lawfully appropriated public funds.” “[N]o county or municipal government, government employee, or election official shall solicit, take, or otherwise accept from any person a contribution, donation, service, or anything else of value for the purpose of conducting primaries or elections or in support of performing his or her duties under this chapter,” the measure reads. The bill passed the state Senate (32-21) and House of Representatives (100-69) in March.

Rainbow flags and Black Lives Matter banners have hung from our embassy in South Korea. Such partisan cultural activism is a diplomatic first. Kerri Seekins-Crowe spoke about her own family’s struggle with mental health. “One of the big issues that we have heard today, and we’ve talked about lately, is that without surgery, the risk of suicide goes way up. Well, I am one of those parents who lived with a daughter who was suicidal for three years,” Seekins-Crowe said on the House floor. “Someone once asked me, ‘Wouldn’t I just do anything to help save her?’ And I really had to think, and the answer was, ‘No.’” In an interview with The Federalist, Seekins-Crowe explained she was drawing parallels between transgender behavior and other actions that suicidal people may threaten, such as self-harm. As a Daily Caller documentary out in February outlined, so-called “sex change” interventions advertised to gender-confused minors are akin to self-harm, leaving teens caught up in the transgender craze with permanent physical deformities and life-long health problems. Krylov, detailing their travails in trying to get scientific journals to publish their “commentary about how modern science is being compromised by a de-emphasis on merit.” They were met with rejection, one editor calling the essay “downright hurtful,” and another one writing that “the concept of merit . . . has been widely and legitimately attacked as hollow.” It finally was published in the Journal of Controversial Ideas, which champions “free inquiry,” a fast-disappearing virtue in our age of “woke” intolerance. The politicization of academic disciplines in the humanities or history or the “human sciences” is bad enough, but its dangers are nothing compared to the corruption of the hard sciences by illiberal identity politics. The roots of this dangerous ideology lie in the notion of “equity,” a fancy word for the equality of results. Both “equity” and ideological distortions of science have a long history of destructive outcomes.
