A proposed rule by the Bureau of Land Management to allow public lands to be leased for conservation has mobilized Wyoming industry leaders and lawmakers, who say it would ‘stop all human activity’ on those lands, including recreation, grazing, and oil and gas development. […] Adam Stewart, legislative director for the office of U.S. Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyoming, testified at the meeting that Wyoming’s congressional delegation is very concerned about the rule. Stewart said Lummis believes that the proposal is a radical departure from the law and “flies in the face” of 50 years of public land management practices. The draft of the rule remains vague as to what a conservation lease would mean for a parcel of land that is leased for this purpose, but it does appear that it would be a designation preventing any use of that parcel, Stewart said.

It poses a direct threat to the health and existence of small businesses throughout the West. States will be deprived of revenue sources vital to funding local schools, healthcare systems, and public safety programs. Wildlife will suffer and die due to the lack of water and resource development that benefit livestock and wildlife. Even Biden’s own Small Business Administration has publicly called out the dangers this rule poses. Our state lives or dies by the success of the the industries targeted by this rule; perhaps that is why the BLM refuses to hold public comment periods in Wyoming.

The letter recounts that on April 25 a Marion, Ohio, taxpayer received a visit from a man who claimed his name was “Bill Haus” and worked in the IRS criminal division. […] The letter says the taxpayer called her attorney, who insisted Mr. Haus leave the house, only to be told by Mr. Haus: “I am an IRS agent, I can be at and go into anyone’s house at any time I want to be.” Mr. Haus finally left, but not before threatening to freeze the taxpayer’s assets and put a lien on her house if she didn’t satisfy the balance in a week. Fearing a scam, she called the local police, who ran Mr. Haus’s license plate to verify his identity. […] If true, this is something else. An agent of the Treasury, wielding the power of tax enforcement, shows up unannounced at a taxpayer’s home. He lies about his identity and his purpose to get inside, then threatens the taxpayer with punishment if she doesn’t pay a tax bill that she doesn’t owe. The IRS agent leaves only after an intervention by her lawyer, and when local police call the agent he sics the Treasury Department on the officer.

The unit protects current as well as former high-ranking military officers from “assassination, kidnapping, injury or embarrassment,” according to Army records. Protective Services’s mandate has expanded to include monitoring social media for “direct, indirect, and veiled” threats and identifying “negative sentiment” regarding its wards, according to an Army procurement document dated September 1, 2022, and reviewed by The Intercept. The expansion of the Protective Services Battalion’s purview has not been previously reported. The country’s national security machinery has become increasingly focused on social media — particularly as it relates to disinformation. Various national security agencies have spent recent years standing up offices all over the federal government to counter the purported threat. […] The Army procurement document shows it wasn’t just looking for surveillance software, but also tools to disguise the Army’s internet presence as it monitors the web. The contract says the Army would use “misattribution”: deceiving others about who is actually behind the keyboard. Even churches openly support it. What had been considered bad under the Straight Constitution must now be considered good under the Queer Constitution, and vice versa. Now this imperial project has gone international. Conservatives can no longer indulge in libertarian fantasies. Peaceful coexistence between a queer and a straight constitution is not sustainable.

The self-styled centrist group No Labels has no shortage of haters fretting that its bold pledge to spend $70 million on a third-party presidential bid in 2024 will throw the election to former president Donald Trump if, in fact, he is the Republican nominee. Democrats are damning the group in the New York Times. Behind the scenes, President Joe Biden and company are begging them to sit on the sidelines. But how much money has the group actually raised to fund its effort to get on the ballot? It’s hard to say. No Labels won’t say how large its staff is, so, in the face of several resignations last year — a POLITICO report put the number at at least 11 out of a staff of 20, while its website lists just three staff members — it is difficult to know whether the group has the manpower to shake up the two-party system. […] No Labels has gained access to the ballot in just four states as of April, although that number may dwindle to just three. The Arizona Democratic Party filed a lawsuit in March to kick No Labels off the 2024 ballot in the state.
