Recently, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines announced the creation of a new office within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI): The Foreign Malign Influence Center (FMIC). It would encompass “election threat work, essentially looking at foreign influence and interference in elections, but it also deals with disinformation more generally.” Legislation creating the center was passed by Congress and signed into law in 2022. Although its work nominally deals with disinformation targeting U.S. elections and public opinion within the United States, there are at least two questions that need to be asked: First, is this office essential or duplicative of other ongoing efforts? Second, is this even appropriate work in which the federal government should be engaged? In the last few years, as disinformation and countering disinformation have become the staples of political and public policy discourse, a cottage industry has grown up within the federal government around these topics. Support in Congress means the money grab is on, with federal agencies vying to secure funds for the hot new topic to grow their bureaucracy, influence and power.

Now, law enforcement will be further delayed in investigations by efforts to determine if materials are real or not. Harmful AI materials can also re-victimize anyone whose images of past abuse are used to train AI models to generate fake images. “Children’s images, including the content of known victims, are being repurposed for this really evil output,” Portnoff said. While the title on its own, “Can Hospitals Turn into Climate Change Fighting Machines?” might not be alarming at first glance, the content has sinister undertones that seem to be more common from those journalists most concerned with climate change. It may be a good idea, as the article explains, for hospitals in the American Southwest to have more water-conserving landscaping, or patch up or replace nitrous oxide pipelines. However, I don’t want hospital staff who are devoted to “sustainability” foremost, and patient care second, treating me. A San Diego hospital “medical director of sustainability” brags about stopping the use of one anesthetic gas, desflurane, because when it escapes into the atmosphere, it stays there for “a decade or more.” Indeed, the “sustainability” crowd in medicine seems extremely concerned with our use of anesthetic gasses, the American Society of Anesthesiologists say that they are responsible for “0.01-0.10% of the total global carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions contributing to global warming.” That’s right – 1/100 to 1/10 of one percent of carbon dioxide “equivalent” emissions. […] A quick Google search of the phrase “reduce anesthesia for climate change” will find you dozens of articles touting the environmental virtues of reducing the flow of anesthesia to patients. […] What does the “sustainable” “net zero” option look like? For that answer, you can look at the countries that have the least access to electricity, and thus have the lowest emissions, like Liberia, which use mostly wood and dung for energy. The GSA is hoping that will attract roughly another $925 million in private sector investment, bringing total funding to roughly $1.9 billion, in an effort to revamp 40 million square feet of federal property, which is roughly 20% of all buildings managed by the GSA. “GSA is really trying to lead by example in these new kinds of buildings,” Jetta Wong, senior climate advisor at the GSA, told the Post. “If we can do it in the federal government, the private sector can do it, too.”

While much of the support for electrifying everything is based on achieving “net zero,” and much of Tesla’s “Master Plan Part 3, Sustainable Energy for All the Earth” attempts to show how each economic sector can be electrified, there is a case for electrification that has nothing to do with concerns about fossil fuel emissions and the climate. It rests instead on the inherent efficiency of electricity versus combustion. But the May 1 confrontation between the ex-Marine Daniel Penny and the mentally ill Neely stands for more than failed policy. Baldor & Copp: Pentagon accounting error provides extra $6.2 billion for Ukraine military aid

The Pentagon said Tuesday that it overestimated the value of the weapons it has sent to Ukraine by $6.2 billion over the past two years — about double early estimates — resulting in a surplus that will be used for future security packages. Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said a detailed review of the accounting error found that the military services used replacement costs rather than the book value of equipment that was pulled from Pentagon stocks and sent to Ukraine. She said final calculations show there was an error of $3.6 billion in the current fiscal year and $2.6 billion in the 2022 fiscal year, which ended last Sept. 30. As a result, the department now has additional money in its coffers to use to support Ukraine as it pursues its counteroffensive against Russia. And it come as the fiscal year is wrapping up and congressional funding was beginning to dwindle.

Today, transgenderism dominates political discourse and popular culture. The once relatively obscure medical condition is found almost everywhere – ubiquitous in print, advertising and all modern entertainment. It has found a home in TikTok communities dominated by teenagers and young people. In schools and across the education system, “gender ideology” is taught to children as young as five. In the early 1900s and in response to the illegality of homosexuality under German law, a young Jewish doctor named Magnus Hirschfeld founded the Institute of Sexual Research – a place where sex reassignment surgeries would be tested for the first time. That changed in 1952 when Christine Jorgensen, a WWII veteran, returned home from Denmark. Today, he is understood as the godfather of the modern transgender movement. Some also hold him squarely responsible for the gender theory that has infected young people in the West. You may be asking yourself, how could Money possibly test this theory? He’d need test subjects – newborn children that could be “socialized” as the other sex. And as unlikely as it may seem, that is precisely what Money did with a young Canadian boy, David Reimer. At around seven months old, David suffered a catastrophic injury to his penis after a failed circumcision. Not knowing what else to do, David’s parents took him to John’s Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, Maryland to see John Money. In this child, John Money saw an opportunity to test his theory and convinced David’s parents to allow their son to undergo a surgical sex change. This would be the first sex reassignment surgery ever conducted on an otherwise normal, healthy child.

Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib is proposing legislation that would require firearms dealers to try to sell a gun lock for every gun purchase made, a change she said would help prevent accidental shootings. The proposed legislation, known as the ‘‘Safe Storage Saves Lives Act,’, makes it a “requirement that a gun seller have a compatible gun lock available for every firearm for sale” and states that it “shall be unlawful for any person to offer a firearm for sale unless the person offers for sale a secure gun storage or safety device that is compatible with the firearm.” […] “Rep. Greenfield: New York to Provide Sanctuary to Doctors Who Defy Abortion Laws in Other States

Last week, I argued that Democrats were already engaging in a ‘Soft Secession’ by breaking with federal law, declaring themselves sanctuary states, boycotting conservative states and announcing that they would provide sanctuary for those refusing to abide by their laws on abortion or transgender mutilation. I argued that conservative states ought to do likewise. And the process is only accelerating. The New York State Legislature gave final approval on Tuesday to legislation that provides legal protection for New York doctors to prescribe and send abortion pills to patients in states that have outlawed abortion.
