Bradbury: How to Fix the FBI

The FBI’s chilling record of politicized abuses and the executive branch’s continuing misuse of federal intelligence authorities to target the exercise of free speech and other constitutional rights of Americans gives Congress clear and compelling grounds for enacting forceful reforms, starting with the FBI. In fact, the time is ripe for Congress to consider a complete reconstruction of the FBI, defining the scope of its jurisdiction, refocusing its mission on traditional law enforcement, and putting it under effective control. Short of that comprehensive reform, Congress must, at the very least, put in place the minimum set of proposed reforms outlined in this paper, and reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act’s Section 702 offers a perfect vehicle for doing so. The liberty of the American people is under threat from politicized national security agencies, exemplified by the abuses of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Congress must act to restrain and reform the FBI and mitigate this threat to our cherished freedoms. There is good reason to rethink the entire idea of the FBI at a fundamental level—to start over from scratch and reconstruct the Bureau in a new form, one refocused on its core law enforcement responsibilities, brought under effective control and oversight, and subject to the structural restraints needed to protect the constitutional rights of Americans. […] The following outline describes in general terms the major elements we believe ought to be considered in putting together a plan for a complete makeover of the FBI.

Element No. 1: Consider restricting the new Bureau’s jurisdiction and eliminating redundancies with other federal law enforcement agencies. Congress should decide whether the newly constituted Bureau41 To emphasize the clear demarcation from the past abuses of the FBI and the launching of a newly constituted entity in a form more aligned with the principles of federalism and our constitutional values, Congress could give the entity a new name. We refer to it here as simply the “Bureau” or “new Bureau.” must continue to exercise general authority to investigate all federal crimes or whether it would be more appropriate to limit the scope of the Bureau’s investigatory jurisdiction. […] Element No. 2: Consider moving the intelligence function elsewhere and establishing by law distinct components within the Bureau, each focused on clear federal law enforcement priorities.

Prosecutorial overreach is not uncommon in high-profile cases. The prosecutors pile on the charges to frighten defendants with the prospect of long prison terms so they plead out. The state also hopes to throw enough charges against the wall to see what sticks. But the danger of overreach is that a judge may want to smack a prosecutor down for bringing unnecessary charges. Such is the case in the January 6 prosecutions. One of the rioters, Edward Lang, is facing 11 charges and pleaded not guilty to all of them. Kasperowicz: House votes to ban Pentagon from displaying non-approved flags after Pride month controversy

In a 218-213 vote, the House approved an amendment from Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., that would only allow members of the armed forces to display the American flags and other approved flags. The amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) says only approved flags can be displayed in the workplace, common access areas or other areas of the Defense Department. Approved flags also include state flags, military service flags and others.

Prior to Elon Musk taking control of Twitter, the social media company entered a consent decree with the Federal Trade Commission putting a neutral arbiter from Ernst & Young in an oversight position for the company’s privacy, data collection and information security protocols. Given what we know about DHS and FBI control and influence over Twitter content, there is a certain irony in the prior position of the FTC regarding user privacy. That said, Twitter’s new parent company X Corp filed a court motion Thursday [PDF HERE] asking a federal court overseeing the settlement to either throw out the consent decree entirely, or put it on hold until the FTC turns over documents to Twitter showing historic bias against the company. Twitter is also seeking to bar the FTC from deposing CEO Elon Musk over issues that preceded his arrival. Within the filing, Twitter presents some alarming information as shared by Ernst and Young about the FTC pressure applied to them.

The Senate will vote soon on the controversial nomination of D.C. Judge Loren AliKhan to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 11-10 entirely along party lines Thursday to advance AliKhan’s nomination to a full Senate floor vote, despite a coalition of more than a dozen legal and policy organizations urging senators to vote against her confirmation. “During her short 11 years as a litigator, she has developed a remarkably long record of advocacy against religious freedom,” reads a coalition letter sent to the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and to Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., the panel’s ranking member. All of the Democrats on the committee voted in AliKhan’s favor, while all the Republicans opposed her confirmation. Reuters & WFB Staff: Chinese Hackers Reportedly Had Access to Senior Biden Officials’ Emails

Chinese state-linked hackers since May have secretly accessed email accounts at around 25 organizations, including at least two U.S. government agencies, Microsoft and U.S. officials said on Wednesday. The United States detected a breach of federal government accounts “fairly rapidly” and managed to prevent further breaches, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America program. The U.S. State and Commerce Departments were among the affected agencies, and hackers gained access to the email accounts of Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and State Department officials, the Washington Post reported, citing U.S. officials familiar with the matter. The hackers reportedly had access to the government emails for about a month before officials caught on to the breach.

The Biden administration’s latest assault on parental rights began with an investigation of Forsyth County Public Schools (FCPS), outside of Atlanta, over the district’s review of school libraries to flag age-inappropriate sexual material for removal. The school district expressly and categorically limited the scope of this review to books containing “obviously sexually explicit or pornographic content.” No one who reads the relevant excerpts of these books can seriously dispute that their graphic descriptions of nudity, oral sex, sexual assault, and other sexual behavior meet the district’s reasonable standard of content that is inappropriate for school-age children. […] Biden’s scheme to impose a school library code on the nation suffers from at least one major flaw: He has no legal authority to pursue it. Federal civil rights law doesn’t forbid school districts from deciding not to offer graphic sexual content on their library shelves. In fact, as my organization pointed out in a recent letter to OCR, the law that established the department in 1979 specifically prohibits OCR from policing such decisions, denying the federal agency any authority “over the selection or content of library resources.”

Children’s books are one of the most powerful tools parents have to help teach their kids how to be good humans. From picture books being read at bedtime to novels being read by flashlight under blankets, kids flourish in the safety of stories as they develop their belief systems. Resilience, empathy, respect, and many other noble traits are portrayed and experienced vicariously through books. What a powerful tool! Having been a part of the children’s book publishing industry for several decades, and as a passionate participant, I have watched in growing dismay as the children’s literature, or “kidlit,” world has shifted and changed, and most recently taken a drastic plummet. Parents need to understand the destructive path this industry has taken, or they will discover too late as the damage hits home.

Queen: Woke Doctor Suggests Body Cams for Physicians Because of the Rampant Racism She Claims to See

The editorial by a doctor named Amanda Joy Calhoun comes with the headline, “What if doctors wore body cameras?” The subheadline is even more provocative: “Black people face racism and worse health outcomes in hospitals. It’s time to document it.” Calhoun’s bio says that she is “an adult/child psychiatry resident at Yale School of Medicine/Yale Child Study Center. She is an expert in the mental health effects of anti-Black racism, with a focus on medical racism.” And you’d better believe she focuses on whatever “medical racism” is. The good doctor and “expert” claims to have seen egregious examples of racism with her own eyes, and she shares these extreme examples of racist behavior among her colleagues: . . .[…] “If hospitals and medical institutions want to make good on those anti-racism statements made in 2020, prove it: Have health care professionals wear body cameras,” Calhoun concludes. “As a patient, I would feel far more comfortable if they did. And as a doctor, I will volunteer to wear one first.” Oh, Dr. Calhoun, you’re so brave to agree to be the first doctor to wear a body camera. But I can’t help but think you need to do better to prove your point than with some stories. If the medical establishment is as rife with racism as you claim, you prove it. Then others might listen.

Its silence regarding the following two California bills, however, is concerning as it indicates it is likely trying to have it both ways: get the outcome it wants without having to have its opinion captured on public record. California Bill AB957 – the law has passed the California House and is now being debated in the Senate. It includes language that would add a parent’s denial of their child’s gender expression to the list of offenses deemed child abuse and therefore included in child custody considerations. […] California Bill AB2098 – this was signed into law in September 2022 but is currently in a legal injunction pending legal challenges. This law forbids physicians from providing informed consent or anything negative or ‘misinformation’ about the covid vaccine. As a law, it provides professional and legal consequences for offending physicians.

In its opening weekend, The Sound of Freedom placed third behind Insidious: The Red Door and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The film places among the top 25 biggest releases of 2023 at the domestic box office, ahead of star-studded movies like Jennifer Lawrence’s No Hard Feelings, 80 for Brady and Magic Mike’s Last Dance.
