Federer: Remembering the men who took a stand and the day the American revolution began

“To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.” — George Mason of Virginia. In April of 1775, the British Royal Military Governor of Massachusetts, General Thomas Gage, sent 800 British Army Regulars, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith, on a preemptive raid to seize guns from American patriots at Lexington and Concord. As the sun rose, April 19, 1775, there were 800 British regulars approaching Lexington’s town green. To their surprise, they were met by Lexington’s militia, comprised of 77 men who were mostly members of the Church of Christ, pastored by Rev. Jonas Clark, whose wife was a cousin of John Hancock. Patriot captain John Parker told the militia: “Stand your ground; don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have War, let it begin here!” It is disputed who fired first, but the British opened fire and killed or wounded eighteen of Captain Parker’s men. . . .

The American militia retreated, growing to number 400, and took a stand at Concord’s Old North Bridge.

There’s another fascinating and mostly unspoken lack of fairness here: The judge did something very unusual, which was to make Wednesday the day off from the trial rather than Friday. By doing so, he effectively barred from the courtroom the single most pro-Trump demographic in New York; namely, Orthodox Jews: Without Orthodox Jews to balance things out, of the original 96 jurors, half were instantly excused because they openly admitted to being biased against Trump. That’s an extraordinarily high rate to be excused upfront for bias. The jury selection process with the remaining 48 ostensibly unbiased people didn’t go well. One of the potential jurors […] If we could be certain that the jury being seated in that New York courtroom believed in a just court and absolute truth, we could also reasonably believe that confronted with the facts, they might be able to rise above their prejudices and issue an honest verdict. Evertt: Senate advances spy powers bill amid huge surveillance fight

The Senate advanced a controversial surveillance bill on Thursday afternoon by a 67-32 vote, as leaders race to fight off attempts to change it that could result in a lapse over the weekend. The vote to break a filibuster on a law extending and reforming the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act’s section 702 authority sets up a crucial showdown before the Saturday expiration of the program. Critics of the authority, which allows warrantless surveillance of foreign targets, want major changes designed at making it much tougher to access American information that is swept up in the program. They also want to strike House language updating which data providers’ information could be used in the program. Due to Senate procedure, the spy powers law will expire on Saturday without agreement from all 100 senators to vote more quickly.

DEVELOPING STORY: Students in the Nebo School District in Payson, Utah walked out of class today to protest “furries.” Students claimed that some of their classmates are allowed to dress as furry animals. A school district spokesman told The Todd Starnes Show that much of the information online is false. However, they declined to specify what information was false.

Gottfried: Golden for Whom

April’s cover story in The Atlantic by Franklin Foer bears the ominous title “The Golden Age of Jews in America is Ending.” And lest we think that Foer is slamming only the Left, to which he and the magazine’s editorial staff are, with some reservations, still passionately devoted, the preliminary summary of Foer’s lugubrious essay provides this information: “The rise of anti-Semitism on the political right is well documented, with Donald Trump attracting the allegiance of white supremacists and freely borrowing their tropes.” Foer is correct that the fitful anti-Israeli rage of the non-Jewish Left is spilling over into overt anti-Semitism. What he does not demonstrate, however, is a charge that he and the rest of the Jewish Left can’t let go of. Foer and his colleagues want to relate the surge of anti-Jewish feelings in the U.S. to an epidemic of hate fueled partly by Trump’s “tropes.” Unfortunately for their fixation, there is no evidence that Trump is a “white supremacist” or that MAGA Republicans are engaged in anti-Jewish violence. […] Up until the 1920s most American Jews were certainly not on the Left; and even as late as 2020, 31 percent of American Jewish voters cast ballots for Trump. Although Foer is entitled to his own golden age for American Jews, those of us who don’t share his politics may see things differently. […] Foer and his friends are not eager to restore such an environment, because it conflicts with their notions of equity and their abstract universalism. And so they squawk about the effects of living in the society they helped build; and as the ultimate expression of chutzpa, they link the chaos to which they contributed to Donald Trump’s unproven racism.

Williams: ‘Have an abortion with me!’ Women take to TikTok to share their at-home, medical terminations as pills become more available in blue states

Multiple women have taken to social media to share ‘day in the life’ vlogs documenting the process of terminating their pregnancy at home and offering advice to other who plan on doing so. Sunni, who goes by @justsunni on TikTok, said she decided to share the lighthearted vlog because this is the type of video she was looking for beforehand. ‘Have an abortion with me,’ she begins her ‘Abortion Vlog’ as she twirls around her kitchen as ‘bright, gentle, spring jazz piano’ music plays in the background. She shows viewers how she prepared for the abortion – including stocking up on snacks and ‘self-care stuff’ as well as preparing meals in advance – for herself and her baby. […] TikTok users were divided on where they stand on Sunni’s abortion vlog. […] ‘GIRL WHAT WHY IS THIS NORMALIZE WHAT, if u can afford condoms, birth control pills, patches and shots,’ the user wrote. […] Other users on TikTok used the platform to share the heartbreak and suffering they faced after getting an abortion. Many shared that they were surprised by how much the termination affected them.

Kottasz: Croatia is Moving Further to the Right

The centre-right ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) won its fourth parliamentary elections in a row on Wednesday, April 17th, but it will likely have to rely on the conservative, patriotic Homeland Movement to form a government. The EU and NATO member Croatia is moving further to the Right, according to Croatian journalist Goran Andrijanić, who says patriotic forces are gaining in strength not only in the opposition but also within the ruling HDZ party. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković’s HDZ party—a member of the centre-right-liberal European People’s Party—gained 34% of the votes and 61 seats of the 151 seats available in parliament, according to almost final results published on Thursday. This is not enough for the party to secure a majority, and it will have to rely not only on the backing of the ethnic minority candidates (to whom eight seats are allocated), but also one other party.
