Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, is one of the Jewish religion’s most sacred and widely observed holidays. n Friday, the 31^st anniversary of the massacre of Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas, the ATF issued new regulations that make it more difficult to comply with federal laws regulating gun dealing and background checks. Since the 1930s, federal law has required gun dealers to be registered as Federal Firearms Licensees (FFL). The requirements hinged on the meaning of “engaged in the business of” gun dealing. This language has always been ambiguous, and there has never been (even after the announcement of the new rules) a true “bright line” that distinguishes when one graduates from selling a few guns from one’s personal collection into full-fledged gun dealing. The law previously required the primary purpose of sales to be “livelihood and profit.” The new rules reduce the requirements to seeking profit alone, tracking the a congressional amendment to existing law in 2022. The changes are more extensive than the legislative guidance, though, by stating that selling guns in the original packaging or shortly after purchase create a rebuttable presumption of being “engaged in the business.” The potential risk is substantial, as violations are felonies. Flipping a gun for a price higher than one paid, even if one originally intended to keep it, now may turn one into a dealer, making any such sale unlawful if it does not involve all the licensing and paperwork that govern FFLs. The War on Gun Collecting: The new rule is the latest salvo in the ATF’s longstanding war on gun shows and private transfers. In the 1980s. . . .

Johnson, carries enormous stakes nationwide as communities confront a growing tide of unhoused residents and increasingly turn to punitive measures to try to incentivize people to take advantage of social services and other shelter options.

Former President Trump’s $175 million bond judgment stemming from his non-jury civil trial will stand, a New York judge ruled Monday after New York Attorney General Letitia James attempted to invalidate it. Lawyers for James on Monday argued that the court should void Trump’s slashed judgment of $175 million in his non-jury civil fraud trial. James questioned whether the company that posted the massive bond, Knight Specialty Insurance, could actually pay the bond if needed. […] The court decided the $175 million needs to be in cash — not in mutual funds or securities where the value can fluctuate. The court said Knight Insurance cannot trade or move the money, but said they will retain control of the account. The court also ruled that Knight Insurance must provide a monthly financial statement to James showing the $175 million in cash and decided that the agreement cannot change without approval from the court.

Not just West Antarctica, but most of the continent also has cooled by more than 1°C in the 21st century. Yes, one of America’s founding documents now requires a trigger warning, in the view of partially government funded radio (hat tip: Masks are bad, actually on X): Editor’s note on July 8, 2022: This story quotes the U.S. Declaration of Independence — a document that contains offensive language about Native Americans, including a racial slur.

The transcripts of previous years of the annual reading now include the warning, relating to the Declaration’s reference to the “merciless Indian savages” purportedly whipped up by King George III of England to wage “domestic insurrections” on the rebellious colonists.

Just two months after the September 11 terrorist attack on the United States, Columbia University’s president Minouche Shafik remarked that terrorism was a “form of protesting against a system,” according to a video unearthed by The Daily Wire. Shafik, who was a vice president at the World Bank at the time, was asked about the economic roots of terrorism in developing countries during an event with the University of California-Berkeley’s Institute of International Studies. While she condemned “extreme views” held by terrorist groups, she said the reason they are popular is because terrorism is a “protest.”

Hands down the worst take on the ‘Gaza Solidarity Encampment’ that has taken over Columbia University in New York City for the past week is that students have always done things like this. Students have forever occupied buildings and quads to make a political point. Students have long agitated against war. Students often find themselves in the grip of passionate radical intensity. Look at the Vietnam era, says every columnist in Christendom, as if the Gaza camp were just another explosion of youthful anti-imperialism. The willful naivety of this take is unforgivable at this point. To liken Columbia’s strange, seething ‘pro-Palestine’ camp to earlier campus uprisings against militarism is to gloss over what is new here. Israel-born Shai Davidai, an assistant professor at Columbia Business School and an outspoken supporter of the Jewish state, was told that his ID had been “deactivated” — even as a massive new tent city sprang up on the Morningside Heights campus with some 200 protesters — all of whom would have had to use their Columbia IDs to get in. He said administrators told him they banned him from campus because they could not ensure his safety.

The United States’ top institutions and assets for higher education are being lost to extremists. At the University of Pennsylvania, we are no longer known as the birthplace of the mRNA vaccine or the computer. Any quick Google search over the past six months will find that our university has been overrun by extremists who hate America, hate Israel and hate Jews. Columbia University has devolved from the birthplace of more than 100 Nobel laureates to a war zone where Jewish students have been advised to go home. Students across the country glorify the first woman to hijack an airplane, Leila Khaled, rather than the women who graduated from their own universities. Students and faculty are at the center of this unfortunate fall from grace.

Well Biden, Obama the radical Democrats got their way, didn’t they? They wanted America radicalized and weaponized. They wanted division, hatred and envy. They pushed grievances and “the blame game.” They wanted the whole country and economy based on social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, Critical Race Theory, reparations and 1,000 other crazy, radical, dangerous, racist ideas. Then they opened the border and waved the whole world in–including criminals, terrorists, America-haters, Jew-haters, and military age males with nothing to lose (and perhaps taking marching orders from our enemies).

Throw in a weaponized government demonizing and framing the leading opponent to Joe Biden; rigging the jury and judges to ensure a guilty verdict; then holding multiple “communist show trials” with one goal- to stop President Trump, imprison him, or perhaps kill him. Keep in mind this is all happening in Manhattan just blocks from Columbia University. Throw in America’s sworn enemies like George Soros, Klaus Schwab and the World Economic Forum, and most prominently China and the Chinese Communist Party, no doubt spreading billions around to fund this toxic brew, and bribe the politicians.

Spin, stir, shake, and now you have the anarchy, unrest, vile hatred, anti-semitism and violence at Columbia University (and every other elite university). This is our enemies greatest dream- we are so divided and consumed by hate, we will destroy ourselves from within. […] Here is what I guarantee would be the response if the victims were black. . . .

Recently, I was asked to moderate a panel with a battery of Jewish luminaries. A member of the audience asked a question, confessing that she was confused about her own feelings. She was distressed by the deaths of so many Israelis, of course, but she was also feeling sorry for the innocent Palestinians affected by the fighting in Gaza. How, she asked the panel, was she to resolve this tension? Immediately, one panelist rose to the challenge, citing an open letter by Rabbi Jill Jacobs, CEO of the left-wing organization Truah. In it, Jacobs blamed the growth of Hamas on […] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She also made it clear where she fell in the conflict that has been raging since Oct. 7. “Some have demanded we choose sides,” the letter states. “We choose the side of humanity.” Talking to friends in the aftermath of the attacks, especially liberal ones, I hear some version of the following argument: We wish for the IDF to strike against the terrorists, but we also urge that no action be taken without careful consideration for Palestinian civilian casualties. We feel the pain all around. In other words: “We choose the side of humanity.” Not me. I choose the side of the Jews. I don’t mean it as a mere bit of bravado, a chest-thumping line you bellow out for a quick round of applause. I mean it as a crucial moral distinction.

The IVF industry enables the abortion industry by feeding the cultural entitlement to God-like powers over life and death. Reactionary legislation is being considered in Congress that would require the health plans covering the majority of American workers and their families to provide coverage for in vitro fertilization (IVF). Christians and Christian employers will certainly be troubled by this legislation. The bill, introduced by Republican Sen. Roger Marshall and Democrat Sen. Cory Booker, requires coverage not only for infertile male-female couples but even for same-sex couples or transgender-identifying employees. The bill appears to require coverage for medical and IVF costs associated with surrogacy, including commercial surrogacy. Although IVF supporters are touting IVF generally and this bill specifically as pro-family and pro-life, nothing could be further from the truth. A significant fact for religious employers is that only about 10 percent of lab-created embryos are born alive. Indeed, IVF procedures treat embryos — tiny humans — as commodities to serve the needs of adults who may not even be related to them. Many embryos don’t survive the freezing or thawing process, or the transfer via a needle into the mother’s or surrogate’s uterus. […] Children have a right to know and be raised by their biological parents. When that can’t happen because of death, or because of abuse or neglect, society rightly grieves with the child and tries to create a compassionate Plan B through foster care and adoption. How is it pro-life to intentionally create motherless or fatherless children by design — to serve the needs and desires of often unrelated adults? But that’s standard practice of the IVF industry — intentionally creating children with only one parent, prioritizing the desires of a single parent or a same-sex couple over a child’s natural right to his or her mother and father?

A career academic, a veteran law professor, and a political appointee-turned-amateur diplomat, Mary Ann Glendon has written a very diplomatic account of her service in the courts of three popes. Along the way, she likely reveals less than she might have about the courts of the three popes, as well as less she might have about one of the three popes in particular. The courts of the popes in question are, of course, those of John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis. The pope in particular is Francis, and the “less” is a guess that has nothing to do with anything approaching a possible papal scandal and much to do with Glendon’s thoughts on and assessment of his papacy. When it comes to Pope Francis, Glendon was initially pleased that the assemblage of cardinals had chosen a relative outsider. Furthermore, she hoped he would be the “hands-on” administrator that neither of his two predecessors were. Then early in his papacy Francis delivered a lecture on what he deemed to be various “diseases of the Curia.” Among them were the “disease of idolizing superiors” and the “disease of indifference to others.” But there was no mention of Glendon’s “elephants in the room”: financial misconduct and homosexuality in the priesthood.
