Don’t Take the Bait

Estimated Reading Time: 3 minutes

Some  friendly liberal advice to  Republicans.

I want to offer my sincerest apologies for your present illiberal treatment by the Democrats, especially progressive Democrats. Your rights as Americans are being violated—in speech and in deed and in broad daylight. If present trends continue, it’s not going to end well for America.

May I offer you some advice? I know the nature of what you are up against. Progressives are bullies. They don’t like liberals either. Progressives don’t like the idea or reality of dissent. They are impatient with the democratic process and persuasion. It’s either their way or the Substack way. They are unbearable.

Heads up: they are goading you to a prime-time slaughter. A mild-mannered historian, Jon Meacham, framed a Bull Connor of a barn-burner speech for President Biden. As the race-baiting segregationist Connor once sought to do with blacks, Biden’s speech looked to put the deplorable outside our civic and social order as enemies of the people.

Meacham’s speech had a message for two groups of Republicans.

To the mainstream, populist-adjacent Republicans, the message was: It’s time to bend the knee and join the Liz Cheney, Democrat-sanctioned Republican future.

To the “ultra MAGA” Republicans, the message was an intended provocation—a poke in the chest, a double-dare to stand up and push back.

The progressives are ready and want you to show up for a fight. They want you to show yourselves as the animals that they say you are. They are provoking folks who see themselves as American patriots so that they can cast them as domestic terrorists.

Don’t take the bait. They are looking to provoke a civil war. Instead, give them a civil rights response: peaceful and nonviolent protest is the only way forward. That’s the proven way to fight the oppression of greater power with asymmetrical advantages.

It’s good to know the extent of the power behind the provocation, and the comparative strength of your arms.

With regard to voters, the United States is still evenly divided, but below the voter waterline, Democrats and Republicans are far from equals. Democrats have institutional arms that Republicans can’t match and don’t fully appreciate. The commanding heights of education, entertainment, media, Big Tech, big business, Wall Street, advertising, and the permanent state—these are all solid assets of Democrats. Even if Republicans win, and win, and win again, the Democrats are in a different weight and fight class. In their own heads and in reality, they are Leviathan.

One would think, looking at politics through this lens, that Democrats would calm down and ride the arc of history to eventual victory. The Republican frog is being slowly boiled. Why spike the heat and have them jump out? Just give it time. Instead, they are raising the heat to encourage the frog to jump.

Why would they do that? Because they can. They have the collective power to pull it off.

Parties and politicians rise and fall, but Washington has a permanent administrative class that defends its own interests, which appear completely aligned with Democrats and against Republicans.

Once upon a time, Republicans could think that the CIA and FBI, the Justice Department, and the military were balanced, even favorable to their interests. No longer. Once upon a time, the media and the Democratic Party were deeply suspicious of these institutions; now they are the cheerleaders and apologists for them and regard their personnel as trusted experts whose patriotism is beyond reproach.

Maybe Al Gore did create the Internet. Before tech was Big Tech, it presented itself as a rival to all the Davos hierarchies; now it is their tool. Business rivals work in concert with one another against those they find deplorable, looking to erase them in a world that otherwise catalogs everything.

All these institutions—and their tectonic, aggregated influence—are in Democrat’s hands. They and their commanding partners understand their asymmetrical superiority, and they think it’s in their short- and long-term interest to demonstrate it now.

Why? The biggest threat that progressive politics faces are the consequences of progressive legislation. Progressivism comes on the scene as a luxury good. The immorality of “poverty in the midst of plenty” is their platform to re-imagine society. But in the end, they always drive out prosperity and make poverty more pathological. Look at New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco—this is the logic of progressive government made real. It doesn’t poll well or perform well at the ballot box.

Democrats should take a hit this November—so they are flexing their muscles across the commanding-heights marketplace to solicit an advantageous response. Their prospects improve with political violence. Preceding Biden’s speech was the legally sanctioned raid of former President Donald Trump, who is widely expected to pursue one more presidential campaign. After the speech, the FBI legally served and netted all the president’s men, with no blowback at all from the mainstream press. Poke, poke.

Don’t take the bait. If you do, you’ll be playing into the trap set for you.

If you find yourself mad as hell and you don’t want to take it anymore—for the sake of what you hold dear, stand down. You should be suspicious of anyone calling for kinetic action. There is good reason to think that that person is an FBI agent. Big Tech and the FBI are watching, waiting, and enabling. They want a super-sized Ruby Ridge. Don’t give it to them.

An eyes-wide-open understanding of this asymmetrical distribution of power calls for a civil disobedience response—peaceful, nonviolent resistance. Let them show their illiberal nature. Don’t give them a diversion that distracts from the consequences of their horrible policies.

This is the path to short- and long-term Republican gains. For all that we have at stake, please commit to this path. We rise and fall together.

The Left Is Not Like Us

Estimated Reading Time: 4 minutes

Progressives do not want the same things as most Americans.

My colleague at the National Association of Scholars, David Acevedo, recently explained that the academic left does not apply “double standards,” because they don’t share the standards they flout. Rather, he writes, their “behavior is perfectly consistent with its true standard: gain power, crush resistance, and destroy the West by any means necessary.”

Acevedo is on point for all radical leftists, not just the academic variety. Their policies intentionally destabilize national security, personal safety, prosperity, the nuclear family, and religion, and are designed to cede America’s leadership to the so-called rules-based international alliance.

Progressives pretend to live in a utopia in which the rules of economics, physics, psychology, and science are suspended as they pursue unrealistic, tactical goals. Radical left leaders understand this dichotomy. Just as they have conceded high gas prices would force the middle class to buy electric cars, they believe the other harms they cause will facilitate achieving their ultimate objectives.

The far left readily acknowledges its preference for a centrally directed government, trillions of dollars of additional spending, higher taxes, the “green new deal,” the end of fossil fuels, restorative justice, racial and gender balancing, open borders, an LGBTQ+ obsession, and shutting down conservative voices. Now that its leaders are becoming comfortable admitting to being socialists, and even “trained Marxists,” the mask is dropping on their true ambitions.

Building on The Communist Manifesto’s call for “abolition of the family,” BLM initially sought to “disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure.” Many local chapters of BLM call for the abolition of capitalism. Oregon’s Department of Education characterizes its mission as “the restructuring and dismantling of systems and institutions that create the dichotomy of beneficiaries and the oppressed and marginalized.” An initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation sees its mission as “dismantling white supremacy.” The American Medical Association calls for “disrupting and dismantling existing norms.” The main trade publication for architects complains that “racism is a metastasis that is baked into every kernel, from planning and zoning to multi- and single-family housing and conversations about public and private space.”

“To love capitalism is to end up loving racism,” Ibram X. Kendi opines. Rather than be guided by the principles enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, Constitution , and the Federalist Papers, radical leftists are guided by “social justice,” and “redistributive justice” through which government, academia, and corporations extort benefits for favored minorities from the privileged.

The left’s preoccupation with defunding police, and depriving them of both lethal and non-lethal tools, restorative justicedecarcerationeliminating cash bail, decriminalizing felonies, and refusing to prosecute lower level crimes, or seek sentencing enhancements, has caused violent crime to explode in major cities, up from five to 40 percent compared to the same period last year in Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle and Washington, D.C. They misdirect that Covid, the war in Ukraine, or tax loopholes has caused this increase is legerdemain. Criminals understand this. In Los Angeles, for example, there is a rush to obtain plea deals before the possible recall of progressive district attorney George Gascon. About 75 George Soros-linked district attorneys control the jurisdictions of 72 million Americans. With turnover exceeding 75 percent in many of these offices, experienced prosecutors are leaving, further eroding law enforcement.

The Biden administration’s war on the fossil fuel industry has erased America’s energy advantage, threatened prosperity and energy shortages, and forced America to seek accommodations from others. Bowing to radical left policies, instead of strengthening America’s infrastructure, the administration bizarrely used the Defense Production Act for solar panels, sought oil from Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, and has considered seeking oil from Iran.

The left is committed to open borders. Since Biden took office, most Trump-era restrictions on illegal immigration have been rescinded. Unenforced borders are an invitation to terrorism, and drugs, and are intended to change elections in the near-term, and erase America’s separate existence in the long term.

Progressives, who vociferously advocate trillions of dollars of additional spending the U.S. cannot afford, this year pushed the U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio to 134 percent, well above the World Bank’s 77 percent redline, contributing to record-breaking inflation, deficits, and interest rate hikes that can hobble the economy. Elizabeth Warren advocates taxing unrealized gains, while other progressives more simply want to increase rates on upper incomes. Both would destabilize the economy and shift investments out of the United States.

The left’s obsession with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has, as its avowed goal, supplanted expertise, and merit with socially engineered outcomes based on race, gender identity, and sexual orientation. It is axiomatic that this will reduce productivity and prosperity, and provoke racial division. As Kendi concedes, DEI is intended to dismantle capitalism.

Polls show that most people support the rights of adults to make decisions about their bodies. But, after years of promoting the transgender and nonbinary ethos, including an all-out push by the Biden administration, recent Pew and Gallup polls found that just 0.6 percent to 0.7 percent of adult Americans identify as transgender, and another one percent as nonbinary, including pre-ops who might never transition. Gallup found that just 7.1 percent of U.S. adults identify as other than heterosexual.

Numerous recent polls commissioned by liberal Democrat organizations show that Americans reject the progressive effort to replace biological sex with the concept of “identification,” and favor banning the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity to children in kindergarten through third grade (see here and here). Progressives have abused about one million post-op transgenders as pretext to destroy girls’ sports and humiliate women as menstruating and birthing persons (it is unclear how these terms apply to post-menopausal women, or adoptive mothers). Transferring power over children to the state and destroying nuclear families and religion are long-standing Marxist objectives.

Whether it’s Homeland Security’s suspended Disinformation Board, forcing out non-compliant teachersuniversity professorseditors, Sharon Osbourne, or comedians, trying to fire Joe Rogan, or fining football coaches for questioning orthodoxy, the left is aggressively punishing those who do not adhere to its dogma.

The riots immediately after George Floyd’s death cost more than $2 billion in property damage and as many as 30 deaths. Those losses continue to grow. Yet, Democrats, including Attorney General Merrick Garland, refuse to condemn or prosecute left-wing protestors who violate federal law, and often encourage their protests. Just a few weeks after Garland commenced a counter-terrorism investigation of parents who disagree with liberal school boards, and as the Justice Department continued to lock up January 6 bystanders, Garland rejected guilty pleas offered by two left-wing lawyers accused of terrorism for distributing and using Molotov cocktails in Manhattan. He instead offered them a lenient plea to a lesser charge.

The progressive rebuttal is Donald Trump, January 6, Marjorie Taylor-Greene, and Donald Trump (again).

Progressives are winning the battle of ideas through their control of education, most entertainment, technology, and media companies, and professional organizations, and the acquiescence of many institutional investors and public corporations. The occasional mainstream win in Virginia, San Francisco, or at the Supreme Court, will not change the trajectory. If anger over transitory vexations like Donald Trump and January 6, important though they may be, prevents centrists and traditional conservatives from recognizing the asymmetric significance of the alternatives, the siege on American values, freedoms, and leadership will inevitably prevail.

In less than 100 days, we can start changing course, but only if Trump supporters, anti-Trumpers, and never-Trumpers channel their anger to achieve a productive result.

Every Curve Flattened

Estimated Reading Time: 3 minutes

Yesterday, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen addressed the mounting problems in European energy markets. On Twitter, blaming Russia for “manipulating” energy markets, she recommended a handful of steps to mitigate the rolling blackouts and other shortages plaguing Europe. The first tweet reads as follows:

Smart Savings of Electricity: We need a strategy to flatten the peaks, which drive the price of electricity…

For anyone who has been awake for as little as a few hours during the past thirty months, yes, we have heard this before. There’s something about hills and troughs in time series that creates discomfort, especially when it brings a notable change in circumstances. And in an age where the belief in the feasibility of the omnipotent state is prevalent, calls for government action inevitably follow.

If disease infections are rising, everyone should stay at home. If wages are falling, a minimum wage is clearly needed. Should wealth increase rapidly among small strata of society, it must be taxed away. When suicides skyrocket among combat veterans, they should receive counseling and other services. Stock indices or commodity prices are plummeting? Shut down the markets for a random period of time!

Yet nowhere in these cosmetic reactions are nuanced, let alone enduring remedies. Who is being struck by disease, and under what circumstances? Why are wages declining? In what professions, and where? What is the effect on employers and the broader job market? If wealth is rising, why? And what effect does it have on individuals who aren’t wealthy? Is it better to hurl hundreds of thousands of young people into war and sloppily patch them up afterward, or should military forces be deployed far more sparingly? If the prices of financial assets fall, are they not repricing? What new information is spurring that financial realignment? And however painful the decline may be for investors, doesn’t it create new economic information that entrepreneurs and managers can see and use?

Numerals, the symbols developed to represent the mathematical objects we call numbers, came early in human history, permitting the counting and tracking of phenomena. The price system, built on the evolution of money by employing numerals, arose to signal subjective exchange ratios and changes in them over time. The change is not only visible to the immediate consumer, but to other market participants near and far. A massive intellectual edifice surrounds each of us, providing information at varying intervals across uncountable simultaneities. Political incentives, more and more, are aligned toward imposing temporary, usually illusory, stability upon any corner of the human endeavor that strays from constancy.

Some situations require rapid action. But those should be short-lived holding actions explicitly selected to buy time for deeper analysis, determining root causes, connections, trade-offs, and unintended consequences. Clumsy, superficial policies are increasingly the end states of crises or periods of duress. The handful of nations currently on their seventh or eighth failure to impose Zero Covid come immediately to mind, as do the woefully diseconomic choices made by the London Metal Exchange to address the nickel short squeeze in March of this year.

The increasingly popular rule that every curve must be flattened and every dip filled is disconcerting, as every domain touched by human experience exhibits volatility at times. An increasing tendency toward knee-jerk responses from politicians and regulators ignores both the underlying generators of those swings and the harvesting of information embedded within them. The pursuit of nostrums whereby fragile stability is sought regardless of the consequences is a half step removed from uninhibited superstition and an abdication of empirical reality. Thoughtlessly mandating the crushing of trends, in retail electricity prices, unemployment, infections, and beyond, is killing the proverbial messenger. Short-sighted, mechanistic solutions not only solve nothing, but provide creatures that thrive on power a license to intervene again, and again, and again.

Weekend Read: The“Progressive” Left: Existential Threat to America’s Constitution and Liberty

Estimated Reading Time: 6 minutes

Perhaps the biggest mistake liberty-loving Americans can make is to assume that so-called “progressives” are people who have America’s best interests at heart but simply have different views about how to make America a better place.  To believe this is to believe the wolf in sheep’s clothing is really a sheep.  The wolf’s sheep clothing is intended to deceive and lull other sheep into a false sense of security.  Once that clothing is removed, the true nature of the wolf becomes manifest.

Make no mistake about it:  the Progressive Left is embarked on a jihad to destroy America’s constitution, to destroy the liberty of America’s people and to substitute a form of government that is tyrannical in the truest sense of the word.

The Progressive Left’s first victims were those who were most vulnerable at the beginning of the FDR Administration:  America’s black community.  Following emancipation in 1865, blacks were subjected to all sorts of discrimination, harassment, and hatred.  They were deprived of good education and relegated to menial, low-paying jobs.  The Ku Klux Klan and the Jim Crow laws did their work.  Yet, despite such overwhelming adversity, the black family was able to remain intact.  Candace Owens points out in her brilliant book “Blackout” that between 1890 and 1900, a black baby was more likely to be born to an intact, nuclear family than a white baby.

All this was to change beginning in the 1930s during the FDR Administration and with greater speed during the 1960s LBJ Administration.  What the Progressive Left did to black Americans reveals its true playbook:  wreck and ruin people’s lives through the adoption of policies designed for that purpose, and then swoop in as the purported saviors of the very people whose lives were wrecked by Progressive Left policies.

In the case of black Americans, there was no point in destroying their economic prospects; those prospects had already been decimated to the nth degree.  Instead, the Progressive Left focused its efforts on destroying the only thing black Americans had left:  their intact, nuclear family structure.  Accordingly, the Progressive Left engineered the adoption of welfare laws that made it possible for black men to abandon black women and their offspring and for black women to undergo such abandonment without facing the starvation of themselves and their children.  As late as 1963, 72 percent of nonwhite families were married and together.  By 2017, only 27 percent of black households were married (“Blackout”, page 51).  Mission accomplished.  The Progressive Left had destroyed the black family, enabling it to swoop in as “saviors” promising enhanced government benefits and thereby capturing votes for the Progressive Left’s plan to destroy our Constitution and our country.

Turning its attention to Latino, white and Asian Americans, the Progressive Left pursued the same attack it employed against black Americans — configure government benefits in such a way as to destroy intact, nuclear families.  89 percent of white families were intact in 1963, but by 2017 only 51 percent were intact.  As Candace Owens aptly points out, “Policies that were purported to ‘empower’ black America actually resulted in the greatest family breakdown across all demographics.”   (“Blackout” page 52).

Not satisfied with greatly eroding family structure for all demographic groups, the Progressive Left added a new chapter to its playbook:  destroy economic prospects for all working-class and middle-class Americans.  Ruin people’s lives, and then pretend to ride to their rescue.  And so we arrive at the Progressive Left strategies, implemented over many decades, that President Donald Trump sought to reverse.  Flood the nation with illegal immigrants through an open borders policy, thereby driving down wages and salaries through increased supply.  (To believe that this policy did not drive down wages, one first would have to reject the ironclad economic rule of supply and demand).  Outsource and offshore good manufacturing jobs to China and other low-wage countries.  Create an indentured class of newly-minted college graduates burdened by exorbitant student loan debt — and at the same time enrich the hard Left college administrators through funds raised via these same student loans.  Those administrators then proceed to use those funds to raise their own salaries, fund gender studies programs and establish so-called “diversity, equity, and inclusion” offices whose “inclusion” rules mysteriously never seem to apply to conservatives, libertarians, or Republicans.   Colleges infested with Progressive Leftists continue to expand their endowments while their students depart these institutions burdened by debt that will financially cripple many of them for decades to come.

But does the Progressive Left really seek to destroy the Constitution?  Let the record speak for itelf as we review Leftist proposals and actions.  Abolish the Electoral College.  Pack the Supreme Court.  Adopt election laws that facilitate large- scale cheating and the casting of fraudulent ballots.  Classify the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico as states so the Democrats can gain four new Senate seats.  Continue the undermining of the Second Amendment right to bear arms through new gun control laws — all way stations on the road to total firearm confiscation, which is the real Progressive Left goal.  Abolish the Senate filibuster rule to make these changes possible.  Use the Justice Department and the FBI to harass, arrest and prosecute political opponents.  Expand the ranks of political prisoners through phony narratives about the January 6 protest.  Deprive those arrested of their right to a speedy trial (months and months of solitary confinement awaiting trial) and their Eighth Amendment right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment (alleged beatings in prison and deprivation of necessary medications).  As a last resort, murder political opponents and then exonerate the murderers.  And so we have the case of Ashli Babbitt, an unarmed, diminutive woman, a threat to no one, who was shot to death in cold blood on January 6.   Her killer walks free today.

The real elephant in the room, however, is the Climate Change Hoax.  Despite compelling evidence showing that increased temperatures are the result of higher energy output from the sun, the Progressive Left has peddled the false narrative that mankind’s use of fossil fuels is primarily responsible for the rising temperatures.  The Progressive Left’s playbook here is to substitute poorly-performing (and expensive!) wind and solar power for power generation from fossil fuels and nuclear reactors.  If the Progressive Left succeeds, energy costs will rise astronomically, thereby impoverishing working class and middle-class Americans — the precise goal sought by the Progressive Left.

And how do we know this is true?  We know it is true through an examination of Progressive Left policies that seem to make no sense at all, even if the Progressive Left’s Climate Change theories are assumed to be true.  As soon as he was elected, Biden promulgated executive orders to cancel the Keystone pipeline, halt substantially all drilling for oil and gas on federal lands and discourage banks from lending to energy companies.  When gasoline and diesel prices shot through the roof — a direct product of these policies— Biden didn’t relent on the destructive energy policies he mandated.  Instead, he has traveled to Saudi Arabia to persuade its ruler to increase crude oil production.

From an environmental/Climate Change policy standpoint, what makes more sense:  (1) to have Saudi Arabia produce an additional x thousand barrels of oil and then ship such oil thousands of miles to the United States, or (2) to increase drilling in the United States and create an additional x thousand barrels of oil here at home?  The oil tankers carrying the x thousand barrels of oil will burn tons of crude oil getting from Saudi Arabia to the United States, thereby pouring huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.  This extra carbon dioxide generation is completely avoided if the drilling occurs here.

If ameliorating purported Climate Change is really the objective, Biden would be reversing his policies against drilling on federal lands, not going to Saudi Arabia for more oil.  But in truth and fact, ameliorating Climate Change is not the objective, only a pretense.  The real objective is to destroy the domestic American oil and gas industry and to impoverish Americans.

Equally alarming is the New Green War on food production.  Chemical fertilizers derived in part from fossil fuels are being attacked.  The Climate Change fanatics insist farmers should substitute manure for chemical fertilizers. Any farmer will tell you that this is a surefire recipe for plunging food production, wildly-escalating food prices, and, ultimately, famine.  Intentionally creating a famine is part of the totalitarian playbook, as shown by planned famine in the Ukraine during 1932 and 1933 that starved to death approximately four million Ukrainians.  This atrocity, now known as the Holomador, was intentionally engineered by Josef Stalin and the Bolsheviks to subjugate the Ukraine, where revolts against Soviet rule were beginning to emerge.

The Progressive Left’s threat to our liberty, our Constitution, our property, and our very lives has now reached existential proportions.  The elections in 2022 and 2024 undoubtedly will be the most consequential of our lifetimes.  Election-stealing is now part of the Progressive Left playbook, making the Patriot cause doubly difficult.  If Patriots can prevail in these two elections, the Progressive Left agenda can first be shut down on a federal level beginning in January 2023 and then reversed beginning in January 2025.  There must be a reckoning with the Deep State and the Progressive Left if the United States is to survive as a constitutional republic.

POSTSCRIPTCategory:  Just when you thought it couldn’t get any crazier.

Many progressives believe racists and racism are everywhere.  Trump is racist.  Republicans and conservatives are racist.  Jews and Christians are racist.  Mathematics is racist.  Starting on time is racist.  Paying attention to detail is racist.  There is a racist underneath every rock and behind every bush.

In an alarming display of imbecility, a reporter from the New York Times writes the following:  “ . . . the outdoors can bring up connotations of enslavement and lynching for Black communities . .. Acknowledging the racist history of the outdoors is an important first step toward making people of color feel safer in nature.”

So beware of those racist mountains and free-flowing streams!  Prior to reading the reporter’s article, I thought racists were underneath every rock and behind every bush.  What I obviously missed in my ignorance is that the rocks and bushes themselves are racist.  I guess you learn something new every day.
