The United States Senate currently has 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans. Most bills require 60 votes to end debate on a bill (this is known as cloture) and 60 votes to pass a bill by the full Senate. Harry Reid eliminated this by the “nuclear option” for judicial and executive appointments (51 Senate votes required) in 2013. Fiscal and tax bills can be passed a few times in each Congressional session by reconciliation – a simple majority of 51 votes. Clearly, a simple majority vote today requires Vice President Kamala Harris (as President of the Senate) to vote “Yea” with all 50 Senate Democrats to pass a bill by reconciliation.
The 60-vote requirement for most Senate bills has been in place since 1975 and was 67 votes (2/3) for many decades before. The process of filibuster is what prevents the Founders’ greatest fear for our Republic – tyranny of the majority. The U.S. Senate is ready to eliminate the filibuster for ALL legislation with a simple change in Senate rules (requiring 51 votes). This means that transformational (neither bipartisan or deliberative) legislation for elections, energy, health care, the economy, a Green New Deal, treaties, education, the First and Second Amendments, etc., etc., will be rammed down the throats of Americans by a now radical leftist party bent on changing our Republic into a socialist democracy ruled by the tyranny of the majority.
Call and write our Arizona Senators to fight this extraordinary grab at power. Mark Kelly will do what Schumer tells him to (but he up for re-election in 2022) and Kyrsten Sinema has stated that the filibuster should not be ended. Joe Manchin from West Virginia is against this change and Diane Feinstein from California has indicated the potential future dangers for her party if this change occurs. You can also contact Senators Manchin and Feinstein to make your voice heard.
